The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival
It’s that time of the year again. The 4th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival will kick off July 10th at the Masonic Temple in Fort Greene. You can expect to see Blu & Exile, Mickey Factz, 88 Keys, J. Period (G.O.A.T. blender), Buckshot (possibly joined by Sean Price & Smif N Wessun), KRS-One and many more acts rocking the show.
Sidebar: I remember seeing the poster for the 2nd annual and thinking it was the dopest shit ever.

i’ve never seen a rapper i like who didn’t aspire to be at the top. every rapper i fucks with is trying for that top spot
^Bleek has reached his peak. His time has come and gone as being a sought after mainstream artist. But he still records music and does what he likes. 5 albums… 2 gold and 1 platinum. Not bad if you ask me.
>>bleek? never. nothing about bleek equals greatness
^Greatness according to who? He has reached mainstream success on several occurences.
>>because he had a cushy deal from the start, he never gave it his best. he was always mediocre. he always needed the best production - and verses from jay - to even sound halfway decent
^Mediocore according to who? His first album was one of the best to come out of the Roc-A-Fella camp. 2nd album achieved commercial success. As for production, the Roc always had quality producers. What person signed to the Roc at that time wouldn’t used the producers that were available? It’s rappers now that would kill just to have the production from his FIRST. album. I don’t understand how a verse from someone else can make you sound better. Yeah, they might outshine you on your own track but that doesn’t make YOU sound any better. And this is Jay we’re talkin’ about.
>>he used to get verses on jay’s albums. but it got to a point where jay probably just started saying ‘my album gets worse if i let dude have a verse on my shit so fuck it, he’s out.’
^How do you know this? Where did this come from? Last I heard he was in Miami taking care of his brother and other family members since 2003. As a matter of fact, Bleek being in Miami is how Rick Ross was introduced to Jay.
>>anybody who says “well at least he went gold” — give me a break. that’s when everyone went gold. gold is only an achievement *now.* back then when everybody was going platinum, not so much. and again, he had the whole rocafella and def jam machines behind him and still couldn’t build a fanbase.
^What’s wrong with gold? So 500K people buying someone’s album is not successful? I’m sure every artist in the game wants to go platinum. But their achievements should be diminished because they received the next best thing? I don’t get that. And for the record, Lupe only went gold so is he a failure too?
>>so was bleek successful? depends on your definition. i know for a lot of n*ggas, successful = making $100k+ per year. if that’s ur definition (billz, i’m not talking to u specifically) then maybe bleek is ur idol
^Record labels don’t promise millions. But since there ar many who have accumulated millions then people expect that to be the standard. How is making 100K/year doing what you LOVE to do NOT successful? Tell that to Raheem DeVaughn, or any other starving artists, who don’t even get the proper label support that $100K isn’t successful. I think they would beg to differ. And how do you know how much money Bleek has? And for the record, I don’t idolize anyone.
>>that’s not my definition by any stretch
^Ok. But, who are you?
>>p.s. the rap game is not like the finance game. in the world of finance, thousands of cats are multi-millionaires and build names for themselves and are crazy successful
^Why are you even comparing the two? Irrelevant.
>>the rap game is like tennis, if you’re not in the top 10 or 20 you’re not making a very big impact
^Big impact on who? And how?
>>wtv wtv this is all rambling but that’s how i feel
^Precisely.

***That Jay @ Glastonbury performance was fucking incredible. 2 years removed from the low point album–KC–he can put some of that work in perspective and let it shine through. That whole “Fuck Bush” thing with the verse from “Minority Report” gave me chills.
Call me a sunshiny emo optimist if you want, but at least I can still have moments like that–something the disaffected cool kids around the internet can’t really say.
Jay = GOAT

Hmm, or won’t really say–is probably a better way to put it.
Either way, seeing that performance made a humid, boring Sunday a great day. Props to Nation and Eskay for bringing that to us, cuz I couldn’t see on the BBC website.
Oh, and since I’m at it? “WALL*E” = Movie of the Year. Original story, spectacular animation, humor, and you really care about the characters. Sure, it’s being marketed as a kids movie, but anybody that’s not determined to be a Hater can dig it.

June 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
@ FUPM– Okay, that’s true, but if Batman’s anything less than 4 stars outta 4, Wall*E’s got it. “Hancock” (ugh–pause, jic) is gonna be good, but it’s got some competition from the aforementioned flicks.
June 29th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
fupm real spit the heath ledger posters all over chicago are starting to get to me. let that cat R.I.P. damn it
that said, i’ve got to see the film that they shut down the streets around the sears tower to make
