He first heard the Auto-Tune effect on a song by Jennifer Lopez — he doesn’t remember which one — and borrowed it for a mixtape appearance in 2003. He says it’s no trade secret that he uses Auto-Tune with the retune speed set to zero, and likes to recall a time he spent selling fish out of a truck with his father in Tallahassee: “My dad said, ‘They can know what you’re using, but they’ll never know how to use it. They can see that we’re using salt and pepper.’”

    I’m not mad at T-Pain at all. I like most of his music. He made that song “She Want It” listenable even though it features (arguably) the worst rapper of all time on it. Dudes’s got talent. Now, with that said, I think his music is the definition of TIMELY, as oppossed to TIMELESS. He’s making hits, but not hits we’ll give two fucks about in ten years.

    @Dem – I copped it when it came out, and I didn’t even know they were coming out with an album… it doesn’t sound anything like the old stuff from 10 years ago… I mean Beth still sounds all sultry and melancholy and what not, but all the music is live instrumentation, and it doesn’t sound like they still have the DJ, who in my opinion is the one who made their old shit so memorable… the same way you would memorize Preemo’s cuts, I’d get stuck on the cuts on their old tracks… duke might actually still be the producer, just not cuttin’, I’m not a stan like that tho….

    ^ translation: they fell off.

    ^^^I mean… it’s still dope, just different… I guess preview it before you cop… it took a few listens before I could appreciate it…
