So why not change it? I’ll admit I ain’t doing shit sitting up here tapping thoughts about hip-hop into Nah, but I also know I’m still getting my head on straight after/while in some depression.
It’s not about a nationwide capital-M movement anymore, hasn’t been since X and King left the mortal coil. But I’m not sure that’s a bad thing: It’s when it becomes a nationwide movement that nuts start sonning leaders who need to stick around.
People fear progress and change in America, always have. That’s why Washington was a reluctant president, that’s why Booth got Lincoln, that’s why there’s only one Kennedy in politics now, that’s why the black leaders are Jesse and Al and not the lions in winter that X and King should’ve been.
We, for the most part, just want our whatever and to be left alone. And there’s nothing really wrong with wanting a job, a house, a spouse, some kids, a Lexus, and a pension. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting everyone to have those opportunities, with wanting a more peaceful world, with more X and Y accomplished beyond your four walls than a Coldplay album.
So I think I’m gonna end up working with kids for a living, teaching, but right now I wanna get ‘em hooked on books through basketball and hip-hop. That’s my passion right now; I just gotta figure it out.

I had all sorts of plans to do Red Cross volunteering this summer because the fires at the beginning of the summer that were on CNN and some stuff were a half-hour south of my house, but I was told I needed to go through training and so on and so forth. So I ended up just going to the grocery store with some friends and donating a lot of food.
This summer’s weird, too, because my moms has been dealing with a lot of stuff (grandparents moved, reluctantly, from the house they’d been in for 40 years to my aunt’s house, and that caused family tension, and now she’s got some medical stuff), and I’ve got a summer trip to take to a leadership conference for school and then the fam is taking the first family vacation in about 10 years and it actually might not be totally lame.
And I don’t drive, so I don’t have the autonomy to do things; that’ll change by the end of this summer, but I won’t have a car up at school.
So, basically, I’ll be off my ass up at school. I’ll be doing something. But a lot of things mitigate that right now.
Be the change you want to see starts like Septemberish for me; ’til then, I have to just deal with the obstacles.
