nate do you truly think the taliban practices traditional islam properly? i would be sad to learn that that’s the case, because it’s not true. in islam, there is a requirement that in order to issue islamic rulings, one must be a student of the law, his culture, and the time in which he is living. clinging to a single interpretation of islam rooted in 7th century arabia is in no way the proper way to practice the faith and in fact constitutes a fatal flaw. to practice and to preach islam, one must understand traditional shari’a, global culture and politics, and modernity. get rid of the second and the third item and you’re lost. but that’s what the taliban does, and it’s dead wrong
