^ Not to piggyback off of Land’s synopsis, because I was unfamiliar with the journalist up until this article, but his points parallel to mine. An athlete’s personal scribes on his/her body has nothing to do with mannerisms, business accumen, or more importantly their ability and skills in their profession. Case in point, when Iverson first entered the league he was the most marketable talent that the league had embraced since MJ’s era. And though the NBA managers and owners (i.e. old white men) opposed the tats, they continued to use A.I. for being the cash cow that he was. Tats, cornrows, and legal woes aside, Iverson set the tone for the league and for the youth in general. His influence rippled throughout suburbia faster than any other talent in professional sports at the time, and that scared the hell out of conservatives (i.e. crakkkas and passive Blacks aka Uncle Toms). Iverson’s 1st shoe: sold out in a day. 76ers jersey: sold out in weeks. Sprite, Reebok, etc. all embraced the counter-culture to the “clean cut” Jordan image that was forced on NBA athletes prior to Iverson. Even And1 was able to profit afterwards because A.I.’s level of streetball/playground style was now popular and accepted. The point is, when old white men (i.e. people who run the world) want to set or change the tone then they will do so, at will. The dress code and age limits were implemented because the league was accumulating too many young, rich, Black men who no longer conformed to their standards and just wanted to be themselves. Furthermore, how dare the NBA have the audacity to scrutinize the tats/dress code when they send their top scouts to impoverished neighborhoods across the country lookin’ for the “thugs” (as they would like you to believe) who are the best talents in the league. The mandating of such policies is just another form of subliminal racism so that “massa” can show these niggers who’s boss and that their “free will” won’t be tolerated. Iverson’s popularity as the popular thug (no Nas/Kelis collabo) has waned and since the influx of those with his mentality has entered the NBA then of course it was only a matter of time before Stern & The Gang laid the iron fist.
