URB’s Nas Feature

Is available online.
Here he speaks on the insinuation that he is consciously trying to capitalize off the word Nigger.
“I can understand if they were talking to a certain artist who just makes stupid music all the day long, you know, that doesn’t really say anything, but I try to say some shit. I definitely know it’s a hell of a responsibility when I have an older generation of fans. I’m trying to be clear what I mean in the music. I’m definitely trying to have that responsibility but at the same time, this is my way of strapping up my bombs and committing a so-called terrorist act against an enemy that has been evil to my people, your people, whoever. This is all I can do. I’m not a wicked man; I can’t strap up a bomb and do that shit. But with my music, this is how I fight. It’s my therapy. So, let me be, let me say what I wanna say. That’s all I’m saying.”
Much of the article focuses on the album’s title, which may now be a moot point, but makes for an interesting read nonetheless.

Through the lights
cameras and action glamour glitters and gold
I unfold the scroll
spread seeds to stampede the globe
when I’m deceased
by then the beasts will rise like yeast
and conquer peace
leaving savages to roam in the streets.
live e paying me to give in my gun
trick my wisdom
with the system
that imprisoned my son
smoke a gold leaf
i hold heat
nonchalantly
i’m raunchy
but things I do is real and never haunts me….

^Nah, he’s rappin’ in the right era just under the wrong circumstances. He coulda easily been the Yayo of the situation and had a bigger and better buzz. Nothin’ astronomical, but better than the situation he’s in. But he chose otherwise. Everybody wanna be the general, not enough soldiers. You gotta prove that you can handle the pressure in the field before you’re put in charge of your own platoon.

he woulda had to pay like a million dollars for that promotion… smart business move by nas

but Ransom grew alot more than Hitchcock has over the years. he’s way better now lyrically. Hitch would have been the Yayo of the team in my opinion.

^But that’s why the statement that follows was made. Joe has more buzz on the net more than any other rapper. As the industry begins to shift, more people will be relying on the net to get their name out there. Not to mention that major labels still wanna give Budden a shot but I assume he’s makin’ the wiser decision but weighin’ his options before inking a deal again. That could’ve been an opportunity for Ran to get his foot through the labels’ doors. In the meantime, he coulda just been doin’ joints with Budden and puttin’ out his own work. Many have done it. And the formula still works but ninjas get greedy and tend to go astray right before the opportunities start rollin’ in. Look at artists like Cool Kids, Kids In The Hall, Pac Division, DBlock, Wale, Little Brother, Max B, Jay Electronica, etc. All these cats are able to sustain a career via internet and if given the shot to be put in a better position by simply carrying their weed, then that’s the opportunity one should take.
Smh @ ninjas wantin’ to be above weed carrier status. It takes YEARS for some weed carriers to get acknowledged outside of the shadow, but the benefits are well worth hit. Word to Splif Starr randomly appearing in Jake Steed flicks.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Good to see Nas on the cover or URB. I don’t think Nas was trying to use Nigger as a gimmick, I think he was trying to stimulate more discussion about race / ethnicity / skin color in hip hop and america. It’s too bad about the album name change but, even with that in mind, a conversation has already begun.
Don’t forget, there are still people talking about “Hip Hop is Dead.” (and rightly so)

May 27th, 2008 at 11:08 pm
one time in 1998 I was leaning against a wall on Broadway and Astor Place or something and I see all these lights and cameras and shit focused on the train entrance across the street. I watch for a while and look to my left and leaning against the wall not 10 feet from me was Nasir Jones. He gave a nigga a nod, and I smirked the nigga and smoked my joe. At the time, Makavelli had just painted Nas as a liar trying to imitate Pac’s life, and so I was like fuck this fake ass nigga. I guess that’s life as a star huh. I didn’t even know that nigga and treated him like I knew he wasn’t shit. Now I wish I would have gave the nigga a pound. Yall stop the hatred. Take it from a recovering hatahaulic.
