lyrics is not a small part in judging who is good, and thats for any genre
if that was the case instrumental albums would be going triple platinum
______________________________________________________________
When I mention Lyrics, I’m talking about the usage of poly syllabic words….Hip-hop had an infatuation with it, which caused its demised, because it focused so heavily on that, that it forgot how to be musical…..
Meaning and content is what you judge an artist on, and how eloquently they say it….New York became so focused on saying a useless dictionary word, that the subject and content didnt matter……Like a rapper could talk about drugs and murder and weed but if he said a verse that had 5 multi syllabic words….it was all of a sudden he was hot….i.e. Canibus….Canibus knows nothing about music, all he knows how to do is formulate words together, but its not music, its just words….
Nas had flow and was artistic with his Flow….He had incredible timing and had an ear for music and knew how to rhyme….His lyrics was just an added element….
Jay-z Flow….Lyrics was an added element….
Big….Hot flow and voice..His rhyme style was impeccable…He never fell off beat with his flow, and he always paused at the rhyme time with that staccato flow………Lyrics was an added element
Pac….Hot flow and deep voice….He had a bullet style flow…..His content and Meaning to his rhymes is the greatest out of anyone…..Didnt use multi syllabic words cause he catered to the common man….But his lyrics were great…..
I remember people were sayin the same shit when the West was on top of the game…
Even Wu said in a interview “They aint really MCs. They got the kids calling women bitches & hoes. They’re all about instrumentation, not rhymes…They cant really rapâ€
Yada Yada Yada. Every region has their niche in the game. Obviously there was a void that Southern artists started filling. Its not like everyone outside of the South hates them
All the south did was bring fun back into the music. People act like Hip-Hop didnt start in the dancehall
first hot weekend cruising up M street or maybe wisconsin hitting the arab/ethiopian spot where all the hood rat chicks from southeast DC used to cop their fake pradas and manolos
cluckin around rockin them skretch denim jawns that let them asscheeks sway in the wind in full 3D animation
i like how it’s not even a discussion that chicago is running shit right now
*proud*
let’s let NY and the south fight for that #2 spot like anyone gives a fuck
let me put my 2 cents in though: jeezy alone sold more than like the last 20 NY cats to drop an album, and his shit wasn’t no fluff, neither. shit was fire. add to that the weezy factor and the TI factor and the rawsssss factor and the khaled factor etc. etc. and i think NY is chillin at the #3 spot right now, maybe tied with L.A., at least till detox/LAX/all the other cali albums come out (those are dropping in nevruary last i heard)
^ok of course chicago is on top right now but how is wayne from atlanta? smh nyc is in the number two spot as long as jay and nas keep dropping albums every year. if ur going by sales, how can u forget about Curtis (as much as it kills me to side with that guy)

You have to look outside the internet world, those cats you named are not known outside the internet except Common……
Chicago is running the internets…..I guess….but let’s be serious ATL is top as far as the Rap scene….plus cool kids and kidz in the hall are some corny as hipster groups and Rhymefest? Please….NOOOObody knows this nigga outside his city limits….
^they alone are enough to keep chi town on top…they had the three best albums of 2007
__________________________________________________________
On top according to who?….To be on top you have to sell more than 200,000 thousand records…
^ROIIGHTt smh and mc hammers the goat rite?
_________________________________________________________
Nah you have to sell and Be good and credible and ATL holds that criteria….all those MC’s I named are good and sell….MC hammer was trash as far as a rapper but he was popular and sold alot
mentioning a bunch of albums that *together* didn’t go gold
^^^^
You cant measure the QUALITY of music by record SALES, Being lyrical goes unnoticed now a days….This is a fact..
Nelly = Top 5
^^^^
yo after hearing Nelly in the booth with Cons on rap city and the song “the bay” from him, I’m actually anticipating his new album, it’ll be the second time I’ve heard a Nelly cd since Country Grammer(which was dope)
Lupe is known amongst white folks who listen to rock bands….He’s not popular in the streets except in chicago and a few others…
^dude first its about sales and being popular, and now its not about being popular with white people its about street credibility. u flip flop like limp dick pause.
chicago is definitely on top on Ye and Lu’s shoulders alone. for sales, u have yeezy doing a mill in his first week. as for skill, u have lupe, who is hands down the best mc out right now.

LMAO…..So Now people give Nelly his props after all these years later….But when he first came out…..He was lambasted and was considered the antichrist of rap…..
Nelly = DFL 6 years ago…..Now you people like him?
In ten years you’ll be saying oh Shawty Lo had a tight album….You rap fans are so fickle….
p.s. @ billz stop being so emotional. be honest, you probably ain’t copped none of those albums. you’re just yapping b.
^Oh, I’m so not emotional sweetheart (yeah, exactly). And I cop the albums I like, FYI. But none of their sales dictate the quality of music.
First you say:
i never said sales is a guiding factor of greatness but it is undoubtedly a measure of how much you resonate with the listening/buying audience
Then you say:
yes i know some of those people buying albums are 11 and 12 years old and who gives a fuck about them, fine
Make up your mind, tootsie pop. The artists I name do not appeal to white teens and chicks, which is the prime buying market for hip hop in this climate. Get off the goofy juice.
LMAO…..So Now people give Nelly his props after all these years later….But when he first came out…..He was lambasted and was considered the antichrist of rap…..

^^^^^^^^^^
I thought everyone liked that frist Nelly album. That shit got play over here.
I didnt know people were dissing Nelly’s first LP. That was a ill album.
LMAO…..So Now people give Nelly his props after all these years later….But when he first came out…..He was lambasted and was considered the antichrist of rap…..
^i definitely thought Country Grammer was the shit in junior high, i listened to it all the time
In ten years you’ll be saying oh Shawty Lo had a tight album….You rap fans are so fickle….
^^^^
I haven’t heard his album but “dey know” and “dunn dunn” have gotten major play in the whip lately
South Has it now…..Jeezy, Weezy, Outkast, T.I., Ludacris, Ross,
^lol so the south is now one state. before u were arguing for atlanta, now ur including florida and new orleans.
_________________________________________________________________
Fam, if you want to get technical like an internet nerd I can break it down for you…..
At first I was comparing New York to Atlanta…and how New York Fell off….
When I mention New York…its basically the East coast as it is the staple of east coast….
Same thing with atlanta…..when I mention ATL I include the south as ATL is the staple for southern hip hop music….the other states just follow behind it just like Philly and Jersey follows New York….You’re getting caught up in words and not the jist of the content….
^Your girl told me you was havin’ that lil’ “problemâ€.

And take them old ass hot dogs out of the display window, habib.
^take a shower u gas station nigga…we arent talking about crack that u sell and also can get addicted to, we are talking about goat supplements for erectile dysfunction. chances are if u have the number, u call it frequently.
People never gave Nelly his props if they liked East Coast music…..remember when Krs came out against him?…..the whole rap culture despised Nelly to the exponential power…..
Nelly used to be the butt of all rap jokes and was like the MC hammer of rap
compared to the shit thats out today… country grammar is reasonable doubt
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
word, I never hated nelly, I just considered him pop rap back then. He is undeniably better than the majority of southern rappers who are in the same pop rap niche as him today.

^^
all it takes is for your city to have two dope rappers and now chicago is on top? gtfoh
^chicago is not my city, that would by new york. and yes, if they are the calibur of ye and lu, when compared to the rest of the mcs in the games, thats enuff.
Yo rigz what do people in the UK think about southern rap? Just wondering since most of the hip/hop grime there is totally different and more lyrics and less flash I wouldn’t expect people to embrace southern shit there.

^Horny goat weed, Viagra, Levitra, and all other ED supplements are great off-the-market products to sell. We’re talkin’ $20 to $40/pill. And to my knowledge, none of them are addictive.
And an Indian tellin’ me to take a shower is like DeShawn Stevenson making fun of Lebron for getting eliminated from the Playoffs: one is obviously lower on the totem pole.
^ were dope as fuck. why does there have to be > or anything. if you wanna talk > Graduation and Finding Forever’s couple leaked tracks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Prodigy fucking lifespan
I get what you’re saying. But wasnt that later on? Like years later?
Maybe I’m wrong (I smoke alotta weed).
But then again, I can imagine the Rapper-Racist Brigade dissing him. Hip-Hoppers in America are crazy
________________________________________________________

Southern rap gets alot of love out here. More than it seems to get out there…
Obviously, you got some Boom-Bap purists that hate the shit but on a STREET level, it gets bare love. Not just recently either.
Theres always been a link between South music & UK music since Miami Bass days…We used to dig No Limit, Cash Money, UGK…They sound closer to us than Primo
We both love bass-driven bounce / club music (See: Grime, DubStep Jungle, D&B, Funky House, Bassline/Niche, etc)
Plus the dances get love out here too. Remember, we’re more Yard culture than 94 Hip-Hop culture, so dancing is second nature to us. Its not suprising to see a gunman on the dancefloor skanking

i never said sales is a guiding factor of greatness but it is undoubtedly a measure of how much you resonate with the listening/buying audience
especially in this internet age if someone loves you enough to drop 11 bucks at best buy, it means you have a fan base, like it or not
yes i know some of those people buying albums are 11 and 12 years old and who gives a fuck about them, fine
but still a substantialy percentage of sales are going to true fans
like when ghost sells 50,000 - that tells me his fans fuck with him but only to a certain extent
for me, i go for broke when it comes to cats i like. i happily copped 5 copies of lupe’s joint, just like skillz copped 10 copies of the roots joint
i vote with my dollars. so do a lot of people. to say that counts for nothing is ignorant.
p.s. @ billz stop being so emotional. be honest, you probably ain’t copped none of those albums. you’re just yapping b.
