Video: D.I.T.C., EPMD & Naughty @ Nokia Theater
D.I.T.C. (Lord Finesse, A.G. & O.C.) – Thick
Last Friday I caught EPMD, Naughty By Nature, O.C. and Lords of the Underground at the Nokia Theater in Times Square. Good shit.
O.C. opened and brought out A.G. and my personal G.O.A.T. Lord Finesse, so needless to say I went apeshit. That was my first time seeing the Funky Technician perform and I was not at all disappointed. Not to sound like a crabby old head or anything, but they just make MC’s of that caliber anymore. You know, the type that can just whip the crowd into a frenzy with only sharp lyrics and flawless delivery.
I also have a newfound respect for LOTU. I never really got into them too tough beyond their singles because I always thought of them as kinda gimmicky, and after Finesse tore them a new one that one time, that was pretty much it for me even trying to give them a chance. But man, they did their thing for real, and Mr. Funky Man spit some new shit that didn’t sound half bad. No video their performance, sorry.
EPMD – You Got’s To Chill/I Shot The Sheriff
EPMD headlined and tore shit down. I saw them do a nearly identical set last year at B.B. Kings, so this wasn’t the highlight of the show for me, but still dopeness nonetheless.
Naughty By Nature – O.P.P./Uptown Anthem
What can I say about Naughty. Treach and Vinnie were running around that stage like drunk 19 year-olds. They absolutely demolished their set. In this clip you see them opening with “O.P.P.” and the crowd was into it, but it not like you’d expect them to be, especially when the whole place was already hopped up on all that mid 90′s goodness. But then they go into “Uptown Anthem” and you can see the entire place erupt. What you don’t see on the video is later on during the set when Treach straight up open mouth kisses his Tupac tattoo and pours Hennessey all over it. I wish we had a clip of them doing “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” though, it really was a spiritual experience.
Shout out to Legend from OS for the video. My brand new fancy-schmancy smartphone, that I had just received that day, decided to act dumb and refused to turn on, so I couldn’t get any decent video.
(Khalid over at Smoking Section also put up an account of his night at Nokia alot of which he spent backstage kicking it with the performers and roaming celebs. I lost on that tip, because although me and my man had all access passes, the third dude we brought didn’t, so that kind of fucked up our flow a little something.)

I always thought UGK were big out there…People out here listened to ‘em, but we fuck with South music…Plus Pocket Full Of Stones was on Menace II Society (if I remember correctly)
I thought everyone heard Riding Dirty. I heard that then I heard some of their earlier stuff, but i didnt feel it as much as Riding Dirty…
Around 97, UGK, Geto Boys & 36 Mafia were the only southern artists I knew about. And i didnt even know or care they was from the South

the best shit about Nokia is those two upstairs VIP sections on either side of the stage. I’ve been up in that bitch for the last two shows I went to there and I was loving life. my old ass is too elderly to be standing through an entire 4 hour hip-hop concert.

nope they didn’t get recognition ’till “Big Pimpin”, Southern rappers didn’t get mainstream love till Master P blew up(no homo), but some groups and rappers got popular out here(west coast) through word of mouth and by collabos
April 30th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Wow. I never knew UGK were that unknown before Jay put them on a track…I dunno why, but I always thought they were bigger than they actually was…
I guess thats why Jay got away with quoting / biting their shit on The Black Album. To this day, people swear to me he made that shit up himself

Yo… these Barkley/Wade TMobile commercials reek of homoeroticism. First joint he was watchin’ old clips of Barkley and then started picturin’ him in his tight shorts on some Martin “You So Crazy” vibe. Now he talkin’ about picturin’ duke mounted on a horse. Both commercials he has a whispery tone like he was tryin’ to remember his first piece of ass or a honeymoon. Smh
