Nah, Why then Dro?
I alway knew they did it, but I never known why…
I remember in 98 Nore was out here explaining which country was which hood…
April 13th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Yo rigz you get that email i sent?
i was feeling that verse you sent….
out in LEFRAK CITY, QUEENS each building is marked with a flag and the buildings are named by countries….so i think nore lived in the usa building, so its like that
April 13th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
I looked over at the Lupe Tokyo, Paris post.
SMH at some of you people… I call em’ “Antique holders”
It was written can still be played in today’s time. The beats are still updated and fresh and nas’ rhyme style did change. It was much more fluid plus he was one with the beat.
Nas was a better song maker in it was written, and much more gully.
Really I could give a flying fuck if nas wasn’t real with the mafioso talk and all that bullshit, What he said was hot.
Hotness > Realness….Hotness overrides realness…..we gotta stop judging the people and judge the music.
People have to let go of this idea of the holy illmatic. Illmatic is a classic true indeed, but It was written has staying power. The shit is still fresh.
when you listen to illmatic, nas has that old school choppy flow and the beats are borderline oldschool/80′ish. Yes lyrics are great but his song making ability is not as good as it was on it was written.
And some of the songs on illmatic are dull at times till nas busts out a nasty rhyme, here and there.
Life’s a bitch is the most current song on Illmatic. Meaning that It can be played on the radio without sounding dated.

i was feeling that verse you sent….
^^^^^^^^
Yeah, I replied…
“From 41 / 12, to the USA building in Iraq…”
Yeah I figured thats what it was…
April 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Yeah, It Was Written & Illmatic are equal to me…(See last post)
Even though It Was Written is lyrically better by quite a longshot…
April 13th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
To the person who said Kingdom come was a miscalculation, hit it right on the head.
Jay-z thought he could move the streets in a different direction, with a different sounding album and wanted to change hip-hop. But it backfired. Only because everyone thought he was coming back as superman that was going to be full of bangers and coke talk.
Jay learned that you cannot move the streets 180 degrees. It has to be a few degrees here and there.
Jay found out that He wasn’t in charge like that. He thought he could put out his own music and everybody would conform. So it kind of humbled him. He now realizes that no one person is stronger than hip-hop.
Hip-hop is like a constitutional republic- we elect our leaders, tell them to take charge, but when they do drastic stuff, we call em on it. So in essence you’re still bound by the people/streets.
April 13th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Serani’s on this song?????
Wow.
Noyd knows about Serani?
I wonder if Deseca did this beat
April 13th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Sorry Rigz,
Streets disciple is def. not that hot to me in the totality of things.
And I listened to it thoroughly, even though I didn’t care for it, I so desperately wanted to like it. But I’ll give you this. I thought it was going to be a near classic, but it didnt meet my expectations so thats maybe why people are downing it.
But The first disc> Second disc.
Just a moment was the hottest song with quan, Message to the feds was hot, sekou, the heroe’s track and a couple of others but that’s about it. It was wayward and all over the place
But I respect people’s opinion on why they say it’s hot, but I would say most people thought it was a dissapointment which means that everybody has different taste when it comes to artistic expression.

But It Was Written ? I could see the arguments for HHID or Stillmatic but It Was Written is Nas joining the dark side with all that mafioso, fake ass Italian gangsta mayonaise. (Good album nonetheless). But there’s definitely nothing “misunderstood†or “complex†about it. (Minus “I Gave You Power†and “If I Ruled The Worldâ€â€¦which really don’t match the album’s theme anyway…)
^^^
It Was Written is a concept album. The ressurected spirit of a murdered rebellious slave reborn in 1970’s New York as a smart kid turned kingpin named Nas Escobar. Each song is an episode, it bounces in chronology like a Tarentino flick but each track is enoughtof a snapshit to be able to trace what was taking place at the height and at the beginning of the decline of this cat’s reign. It’s Cuban Linx on fucking steroids. Hell ,even if it isnt anything I just said it is, the verses in an of themselves stand as some of hiphops best whether its “Italian gangsta mayonnaise” or not. “If I ruled the world” is the thoughts of this guy when not consumed in the bullshit. A rare moment of clarity that we see in all or favorite gangsta stories (Sopranos, Goodfellas, Life After Death, etc…)It fits perfectly, and stands alongside “Black Girl Lost” as examples that even the most evil of men is really just molded by circumstanes (”Street Dreams”). The man who uses women as murdering whores (”The Setup”) also feels their plight. Contradictions are life. And “I gave you power” is just an exploration of the gun culture that controls are inner cites that fuels and destoys the lives of dudes like Esco and millions of us around the world. It’s what the whole album is about. Shit, it’s what Nas’ whole career is about. Listen to “It Was Written” again and forget about that Jeru the Damaja voice in the back of your head.
Sorry about the essay.

*snapshit - snapshot
Oh yea, the beats are fucking crazy too.
Weakest song : “Watch Them Niggas”
The rest of those shits are iron plated. To me, without this album, the JayZ/Nas argument doesnt even exist…
April 13th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
But I respect people’s opinion on why they say it’s hot, but I would say most people thought it was a dissapointment which means that everybody has different taste when it comes to artistic expression.
^^^^^^^
I feel that, alot of people thought it was a dissapointment…but I thought SD was ill…I still do…
Only song I think is wack is “The Makings of a Perfect Bitch”. OTher than that, I think its a real solid LP. Plus its probably Nas’ 2nd best lyrical performance (after It Was Written)
But I do understand when people say they dont like it…I dont think that album is for everybody…I think Nas knew that too

Life’s a bitch is the most current song on Illmatic. Meaning that It can be played on the radio without sounding dated.
____________
nosign, NY State of Mind has one of Nasir’s best flows to date and a great beat to go with it. Just because a beat is simple doesn’t mean its no good. Those songs feel “dated” in a nostalgic vein, there is no quality lost. That same “dated” feel is what Wu-Tang eliminated on 8 Diagrams and thats what got everyone all disturbed about a difference from their previous releases.
“Rappers I monkey flip em with the funky rhythm I be kickin

Good choices sleep
I’d go with : “New World” for Nas off Nastradamus
and “guilty until proven innocent” with Kells off the Dynasty for Jay (if not his worst song, its hands down his worst single…) this should have been indication enought that the “Fiesta” remix was a fluke but niggas got greedy and did “Best Of Both Worlds” anyway. Incidentally,
Best of Both Worlds>Kingdom Come
April 13th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
“Show Me Whatcha Got,” simply because Wayne showed just what could be done with that beat and embarrassed Jay. “Zone Out” off of God’s Son has the worst Chorus of any rap song ever and Nas’ verses are fairly weak.

Wack song, yes. I dont really agree with your reasons tho. I dig Nas’ verse, ill subliminal Cam diss (”you got a House In Virginia/the only way you sicker than us/Getting bagged with 22’s now youse the ridiculous fuck”). Beats not good, but not horrible, and it’s not really a chorus so much as a chant, which would have been a lot more effective if the track was 3 destrucive Nas verses. Instead, we got what truly turns the song from album filler to shit sub. The Bravehearts. Nepotism and weed carrying at its worst.

Yo Digital Scales, the hood that NORE is from is Lefrak City. People in the hood used to call it Lafrak, because of all the LA (weed) everyone use to puff on a daily basis. When NORE came home from serving his jail sentence, he came up the with the name IRAQ to represent Lefrak and Kuwait to represent Queensbridge (the hood Capone) is from.
Nore lived in the USA building in section 2, but people don’t give nicknames to each individual building.
Now across the street is Sherwood apartments, and people refer to that as Iran sometimes due to its proximity to the hood.
I used to live in section 1, in the Rome building, so I know what I’m talking about. Hope that answers your question.

He was on on that whole Firm trip and it was just taking him out of his zone as a lyricist. It may have mirrored some of themes on Cuban Linx and Life After Death but Foxy Brown serving Dominicans, him jumping out bushes in fatigues on ex-felons and all that bullshit he kicked on “Nas Is Coming” just ain’t flying kid. Stillmatic is considered his rebirth…from I Am, Nastradamus, and the QB Finest compilation. Nas didnt think he lost his way, he was confused at the reception of It Was Written, and that threw him off track. “Nas is Coming” is a weak song, I forgot about that one, but “Black Girl Lost” coming out of nowhere?? Naw, read my post, it comes after “The Setup”, on which two girls (who may be the two girls on the phone at the beginning of Black Girl Lost) are used to set up a rival. They are the definition of lost. Fits perfectly. This is the beginning of the Firm, true, but keep in mind, the Firm seemed like a good idea until the actual album dropped. Inconguous, only if you consider something like Pulp Fiction or Memento incongruous. And comparing it to Belly is just a low blow.
Dynasty clunkers : Holla, ROC, Guilty Until Proven innocent. Change the Game is average, Stick to the Script isnt aging well, Snoop’ verse on Get your Mind Right sinks the song.

But I’m saying, that whole mafioso phase that them niggas was going through, it was a fad. They probably didn’t think so at the time but lookin’ back, you gotta admit, niggas in Timb boots, smoking cigars, poppin’ silver briefcases with Jews—stupid shit. Watch the video to “Mo Money, Mo’ Murda”…them niggas look dumb. Why do you think Raekwon dropped such an incredible album and hasn’t been relevant since? And albums like HHID and God’s Son are a true reflection on who Nas actually is—musically and conceptually. A positive dude with a street mentality. Not hiding behind some far-fetched facade on some movie shit.
Them dudes dipped their heads in a bucket of coke while watching Romello take over NY…over and over and over again. They had to snap out of it sometime.
And tell me, I know it sounds ill but what is “Take It In Blood” about really?
April 13th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Anyone that thinks Stillmatic is ANYWHERE NEAR as good as It Was Written is either smoking Mef, or following media hype….
Usually its the latter…
It Was Written IS a CLASSIC album (how can it NOT be?).
It Was Written is the best lyrical performance Nas has ever perfromed (fuck grammer).
It Was Written wasnt the start of Nas talking mafioso shit…check the rhymes on Illmatic CAREFULLY. Then listen to his guest spots on 456, Infamous, Doe Or Die & Cuban Linx…
The only argument for a better Nas album than It Was Written is Illmatic. Anything else dont make no sense at all.

How about judging the music instead of their personal lives. I mean that’s like judging kobe on his rape case instead of his basketball talent.
You’re judging a video of a song that was on AZ’s album which don’t reflect the song itself.
You not even judging the beats and rhymes you’re mad cause they were talking about coke. so what? So a movie is bad just because they are talking crack and cocaine? a good movie is a good movie, a good song is a good song fam.

Hands down It was written had the best beats for any nas album, thats not even an argument.
HHID is too polished, nas is better when he spits what he’s thinking. Same with Jay. Kingdom come was too polished, to well constructed.
On it was written nas was just zoning out, spitting shit. He was half freestyle, half concepting, at the same time. which came out nice.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
My Movado say 7 the God-Hour, thats if you follow
Traditions started by the school not far from the Apollo
Nas drops WAAAAYYYY more jewels on It Was Written than any other Nas album. You just gotta know what he’s talking about…
You can tell he was studying the Lessons & Israelite books heavy when he wrote this album…
He actually says more enlightening shit on It Was Written than on Illmatic
April 13th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Nah Jud, I’m judging the actual content of the music. From Illmatic to It Was Written there was a big jump in his lyrical angle. Nas definitely has it rough for dropping Illmatic first (smh @ ya’ll for in trying to discredit it’s greatness even a lil’ bit) but some of that shit is just a little too unreal. I don’t care if he’s talkin’ bout moving weight (damn near all rappers have done it) but he went from the “NY State Of Mind” to Alejandro Sosa’s State Of Mind.
You don’t think that’s a bit much?
I’m not saying it’s not a dope album but I remember some dudes in school just really eating that shit up when I found “takin’ shots/drunk off champange from Sicily” a litte too much to swallow. Just a lil’…
For those reasons, I can’t never except it as “definitive classic.” I mean if ya’ll find that type of angle to be superior to others, then so be it, but I try to tell people all the time why it didn’t get re-rated as 5 Mics
April 13th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Nas used the whole mafioso imagery to make a truly deeper artistic statement than a shock tactic like Hip hop is dead can even come close to. The second track on HHID is a mafioso tale. The whole Black mob persona is just a writer zone he steps into, just like he can also slip into revolutionary zone, high concept zone, or shitty trying to make a commericial single zone. If you don’t like the drug/mafia content, i feel you, but denying the sheer illness of the beats and the rhymes?? Especially compared to HHID, that just aint right…
April 13th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Nas self-indulged education >>>>>>> Our regular education
April 13th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
TC,
Nah I dont think its a bit much, the songs are just hotter on It was written. The musical aspect of it was written is just a lot better. His song making ability is much better on that album.
On illmatic he was just rhyming to be rhyming and spitting metaphorical lines without real purpose.
on It was written, I could actually feel what he was saying, plus the beats are like 50 percent better.
Like I said he could be talking about filet mignon and talk about fried chicken in the next song, but if the fried chicken song is hotter than its just plain hotter.
The “realness” aspect to me, is not a weighing factor, the sosa talk doesnt alter my perception of the album.

I think a lot of cats, even ones who listened to HHID quite a bit, dismissed it for a simple “shock tactic” and ultimately slept on the album. “Hold Down The Block” is something all the kids need to hear today. If you can get past the voice “Who Killed It” has an ill concept. “Can’t Forget About You” is one of his best singles in a minute and joints with Kanye, Jay, Game, and Snoop…well…
Like I said, I like It Was Written…don’t love it. The content is cool but how can that trump some real life ish…I don’t know. Foxy’s Brown’s verse on “AA” was far-fetched enough. Ya’ll try to make some of those songs better than what they are.
“The Setup”-nice lil’ story. It ain’t seeing “Undying Love” though.
“Live Nigga Rap”-Ill. “Eye For An Eye” is way better though.
“Nas Is Coming”-Mann…that’s like one of the worst Dre beats I’ve ever heard. Pussies n’ buttholes? Joey Buttafucco? GTFOH!!!

I think it was a pretty incredible creative leap to write about the essentially the same topics but from the perspective of a completely different persona. Yea, the mafiso shit got played out. And that’s why we still have arguments about IWW being a classic. People associate the album unfairly with how faddish the mafioso rap became. Listen to It Was Written in a vaccum, away from thoughts of how corny the mob shit became, and you’ll hear a truly impressive piece of work.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
The only thing saving HHID from being Nas’ worst LP is Nastrudamus IMO

Undying Love is ill no doubt…But by your standards am I to call it wack because:
1) He wasnt a boss shopping in Vegas for wedding rings
2) He doesnt live the life he describes in the first verse
3) The story isnt true, since he’s still alive & DIDNT kill his wife & commit suicide

Me being disappointed with HHID had nothing to do with the shock tacticsw. Songs like Hold Down the Block are great if you read them off a piece of paper. Musically, it doesnt hold up, and the same can be said for alot of the tracks on the album. And the joint with Kelis is painful. Lackluster production throughout, half thought out concepts, and really good guest spots. Can’t Forget About you is his dopest single in while but that’s more a testament to him dropping weak singles than a co-sign of that being a really great song.

April 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
TC,
you’re judging it was written off Illmatic and not on its merit. Like I said you’re not judging the music. You’re mad cause he was talking about mafioso, and timberland boots shooting up shit, and not talking about his real life experiences.
Thats not judging the music, thats judging the topics. Why does Nas have to talk about his real life? If he wants to go inside the mind of Alejandro sosa, what difference does it make? As long as its down with acuity, intelligence and makes it hot.
I mean really, who cares about real life shit? since when did hip-hop reflect real life? Hip-hop is wwe, part truth part fantasy. Music doesnt have to be about real life.
Would you dismiss the Hell hath no fury by the clipse, wack cause they don’t actually sell the weight that they talk about?
Too short aint fucked all the hoes he claimed? is he garbage?
You’re caught up too much into it man, just enjoy the music. It’s not that serious. Music is an artistic expression. Just like in Paintings you have Impressionism, realism and all types of isms. Nas chose to go with fantasy impressionism. Just went for something different. That’s art.

I dunno about it being a leftover…But you just highlighted the difference between me & you..
You take him referencing a few gangsters as him “beating you in the head with mafioso talk”.
I dont look at it like that at all. Him saying some gangster’s names aint gonna make me think any less of the song. If its a dope song, its a dope song. He drops more jewels than he does mafia talk on IWW
And I could say 2nd Childhood > Memory Lane. That dont make Stillmatic better than Illmatic…
I could also say Thief’s Theme > One Time 4 your Mind. That dont make SD > Illmatic…Thats flawed logic

I actually hit send before I had a chance to finish that thought. Eye for an Eye isnt as good as Verbal Intercourse, does that lesson the classic stature of Infamous? Live Nigga rap is ill (as you admitted), it doesnt have to be “better” than any other song in hip hop history or even in Nas’ catalog in order to validate It Was Writtens classic status. @ Jud & Rigz
See…the topics are in the music. It’s multi-layered. You have all these other things to consider when judging a song, there’s not just “oh dope, beat, he’s staying on beat…that’s a tight song. That’s a classic…” Nah it’s bigger than that. Especially when we saying the word classic. Me using superior songs were an example to just show how “tight” the songs actually are. What level of degree are they actually ranked? (”Thief’s Theme” and “2nd Childhood” aren’t better than “Memory Lane” and “One Time 4 Your Mind” by the way—that’s flawed logic).
No you can’t dismiss an artist’s artistic ability by what they talk about compared to it being actually true, but if there’s a lack of diversity in content (i.e. HHNF) how can an album warrent a classic rating? It’s not plausible.
It is deeper than just “sitting back and enjoying the music” especially if we’re talkin’ bout ratings. Sorry my nigs, I’m a critic, I can’t help it.

It definetly had joints on there. the songs on the end of the album (Deperados, Im Leaving, and Throw you guns up) are lyrical tour de forces. The album starts dope too, its when Foxy has that vibrator (PAUSE) skit, and the 2nd part of the album starts that things get really, really, wack…
April 13th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Thief’s Theme†and “2nd Childhood†aren’t better than “Memory Lane†and “One Time 4 Your Mind†by the way—that’s flawed logic).

Yea, they are. Nostalgia affects bias. Taken on their own, musically and lyrically, they are both much better songs. Memory Lane and OT4YM have been encased in gold by history and the album they dropped on.
No you can’t dismiss an artist’s artistic ability by what they talk about compared to it being actually true, but if there’s a lack of diversity in content (i.e. HHNF) how can an album warrent a classic rating? It’s not plausible.

I would say there are other things to consider if its a consensus close debate about a an album or song.
What lack of diversity was there in it was written? Didn’t all of Reasonable doubts songs display the same topic?
Why are you holding nas to some other standard. Wasn’t cuban linx all about coke and guns?
There can be diversity in a theme, and thats what nas displayed. I mean really what was nas supposed to talk about?
You have to judge a song on its own merit, and not off the one of something else. HHNF is no classic in my opinion but some people hold it as and its a damn good album. They talked about coke all the way through. But a lot of the songs were HOT.
A Hot song is a hot song.
How is diversity of content a criteria, if every song displays greatness. The only thing where it becomes wack if every sounding song sounds the same, or the artist lacks skills to switch it up.
Wasn’t AG lacking diversity in content? He was talking about dealing drugs the whole album. come on fam.

It was written is a classic because it has smoothed out groove flows and beats just like Blueprint.
Illmatic lacked smoothness and grooveness. It was written I can rock to and get my two step on, I can think and groove. Nas displays emotions in It was written.
Like on watch dem niggas, the beat is infectious, it makes you think, gives you insights, you can have sex to it, drink some wine. Its a grown man joint. It displays a story, and gives you a moral to the story.
Then Nas displayed grittiness on I gave you power and Live niggas. I mean Musically and emotionally, nas was at an all time high on it was written. The passion that nas displayed was much greater.
Plus the songs were crafted a lot better.

Nooooo…It Was Written isn’t a classic not only because of the extreme themes, musically it’s good not great. (”Nas Is Coming???” What about that monotone beat on “The Setup???” The real message is in his verse on “Life’s A Bitch,” not “The Message.” There’s no jewelz dropped on “AA.” What? And truthfully I don’t see where 4,5,6 falls in all this, Kool G. paved the way but he can’t see any of the said mentioned in songwriting. What’s with the stones thrown @ Illmatic anyway? It’s been placed in Hip-Hop lure for a reason. I can’t even say it was writer’s block because I didn’t write any of the Hip-Hop Weekly’s. No piece of paper exists that says “Hip-Hop Weekly†on it.
.
.
.
This summer, I’m thinking about releasing The Dream Tapes because I sleep, man, and this is real. I sleep and I dream verses, hooks and song ideas. I keep a recorder by my dresser so when I get up in the middle of the night, sometimes I remember the verses that I dreamt and I put them on the recorder. Some of them are more abstract because I’m dreaming, obviously, but I do this in my sleep!
.
.
Q.How do you put your songs together?
The Dream Tapes isn’t going to show my main process. That’s just some weird shit that I never viewed would come out. I’ve used lines in the Hip-Hop Weekly’s that I dreamt. I was never going to make that a real thing. Since I’m on the go so much, I construct all my verses in my mind in my car because I gotta go here and I gotta go there and I have meetings because I’m on the business side now. I’m really hands-on and I’m micro-managing my career.
This is what happens now, dog. As soon as I get in the song, I start thinking of songs and of rhymes because I’ve been doing that for the last year and a half, where I’ve really been busy and on the go. It’s almost like I’ve been brainwashed to where I can’t even write a rhyme anymore. I can’t even do it! I have to jump in the car and that’s the main process right now, is just jumping in the car, putting some instrumentals on and just riding out.

Nobody said Illmatic isn’t a classic, its just so many people have been TOLD that illmatic was a classic and it was written wasnt because the critics were dissapointed cause nas talked about mafioso shit.
A lot of us just think It was written sounds better and not because of what the source magazine said.

Most people say illmatic is his best album cause of some article or magazine.

That’s where we differ homie. That’s not good enough. There’s criteria to this shit. If you’re gonna tell me something is better, no question, no debate, you gotta be willin’ to back up those statements. If something being good and entertaining, then you just increased the classic Hip-Hip album category by like 3000%
And Hip-Hop fans are not silly, they’re passionate (like all the MCs used to be). That’s what makes it one of the most profound genre’s in music. That’s why MCs do have to some of “realness” to them. I never discredited Nas’ or any other rappers artistic expression. That was never the basis of my argument.
@ Jud
I feel you on all those It Was Written songs and the smoothness of it, but if an alien came down from Mars and wanted to know what Hip-Hop sounded like, Illmatic would serve as much better example.

I don’t think anyone actually skipped It Was Written cuz what they heard (I think it’s actually his highest selling album: the magic from Illmatic being a marketing tool) but after hearing him rock cliche-free rhymes on “The World Is Yours” and “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” shit like “Shootouts” and “Affirmative Action” wasn’t quite what they were expecting.
Rightfully so. But if its your fav, it’s your fav, but if you rocked the hell outta It Was Written before Illmatic, I’m not surprised of your angle.

Reasonable Doubt is my fav Jay LP, but I aint gonna say thats the best songs jays EVER made. That would be stupid. Because, Where I’m From>Cashmere Thoughts. That doesnt equate to Vol.1 > RD.
If you dont understand this, you shouldnt really call urself a critic of music.
Whats Going on is Marvins best LP…Does that mean Sexual Healing cant be better than a song on that album WGO? Your logic isnt logical at all…

No I listened to Illmatic first, but It was written just sounds better. At the time Illmatic was some holy grail.
Illmatic is too mystical= Abe Lincoln…Oh he freed the slaves, when actually it didnt.
Illmatic is just a great album and it was written is too, over time it was written was sounding a lot more fresher.
I think it serves purpose to go back over time and re listen to the music. We call albums classics to fast these days.
But yeah to each his own.
April 13th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Yeah Illmatic is maybe Nas’ greatest album.
=============================
Umm…then what are we arguing about sir? If I think Illmatic is his best album, then obviously I feel that’s the best group of songs he released. You’re trying to pick through his discog and make some sort of greatest hits. What are you doing?

I’ve heard that said before but never fully understood it. What about Illmatic and Nas’ appearances on Linx and Infamous foreshadowed the content and musicality of Reasonable Doubt?
^ even if true, that dont make it was writen a better overall album than RD. reasonable doubt gave you the interior dialogue that nas could never fully offer. his eye for detail always lacked the internal depth that jay set RD apart.
April 13th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

If Illmatic is revered by most as Nas greatest achievement and as Jud put it: “on some holy grail” ish, why wouldn’t that generate hype for your next product. Why is everyone anticipating Carter3 when the 2nd one barely went plat? There’s hype circulating around the rapper so there next project is anticipated.
Shake your head up and down this time.
April 13th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

I feel you on all those It Was Written songs and the smoothness of it, but if an alien came down from Mars and wanted to know what Hip-Hop sounded like, Illmatic would serve as much better example.
^^
This makes no sense, and how would it make it a better example cause of aliens?
None of your arguments have been about the music, its all been about nas’ transition of certain topics and basically his life.
Can you make a musical argument why Illmatic is better than it was written?

Illmatic is not considered or revered as nas’ greatest achievments because of the musicality or the rhyme dexterior. Its considered that because it brought in something new, it was totally different. Nas brought something fresh into the game. A nas was never seen nor heard in hip hop history, and people were taken back by this phenom.
You cannot judge music when it first comes out because all elements play into factor. Ex.
When HHID came out, A whole bunch of people and people on this site were saying its a classic, and people were hyping it up so much than they were saying man Nas>jay-z when a few days ago everybody was clowning nas. Hip hop fans are so fickle and unpredictable.
We never hear people judge Rock artists on what they do in their personal lives.
Mozart and Beethoven shouldn’t even be great because of their personal lives.
April 13th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
@ Jud
So you’re saying beats by Large Pro, Premo, and Q-Tip don’t sound like just like a Hip-Hop purists sweetest dreams? Nothing overcalculated or fancy, no pop song samples, just 808 kicks, horns, and transistional basslines. And not to the point where it sounds like some old-school boom-bap ish. Just…pure. Old fashioned Hip-Hop. So with that being said, if someone foreign to the sound of Hip-Hop (alien) wanted to know what it sounded like, this would possibly be the go-to album. Is it the best album of all-time and all that jazz…that’s debatable, but it’s cliche-free aura can not be denied.

Carter II went double platnium QUICKLY.
Illmatic went wood.
Thats number 1.
Number 2, this theory doesnt hold up. To jump from wood to DOUBLE Platnium is a BIG leap. Even Nas said it was propelled by (a member of) The Fugees appearing on his LP…Remember in 96, Fugees were the biggest group IN THE WORLD. And they’re on his LP…
The dudes that was gonna buy his LP because of Illmatic bootlegged it…Thats why it took almost TEN YEARS for Illmatic to go platnium (true stories. its the most bootlegged shit EVER).
My aunties bought his album because Lauryn was on his single, not because Illmatic was a classic…
It Was Written made Nas into a SUPERSTAR, not Illmatic.
The same way how Vol.2 mad Jay into a superstar.

That’s why you gotta know what you’re dealing with when it comes to be people’s opinions. I never said HHID was classic, but I still stand by the fact that its a damn good album.
You cannot judge music when it first comes out because all elements play into factor.
====================================
Why not? We do it all the time. You gotta consider the potential impact and staying power of the songs. Is the tracklisting cohesive? Is the material original? What about the production? Does it grow tiresome @ the 3 minute mark or does it mesh well with the lyrics? The musical aspect of Illmatic is why I consider it one of the best (and Nas’ best) albums of alltime. And the fact that it surprised so many people upon first listen is an example of impact that factors into an album’s rating. The Source gave it 5 Mics upon initial review and everything they said about it still holds weight to this day. It’s all opinionated and inferences but I’m just saying…
