Well I don’t agree with the premise of their argument, and here’s why.
They say they are more hip-hop, cause they embody a certain sound, that was called “real Hip-hop” in hindsight. They mention tribe called quest was called real hip-hop, but a tribe called quest was mainstream and they had records between pop acts spinning on the radio. Biggie Had tracks spinning between nsync and backstreet boys, Wu-tang was up on trl with punk bands and boy bands.
If you gotta hot song, and it appeals to the masses, then you just gotta hot song. 50 cent “in da club” song was at the top of a lot pop radio charts, is he not gangsta? what about the Wu? what about the jay-z joints?
If you gotta commercial sounding gangsta joint, and it actually sounds good, that’s not hip-hop?
What is real hip-hop? These dudes say they sound closer to real hip-hop, but real hip-hop is not definable. So does real hip-hop only have a certain sound, and to only be considered real you have to sound like a tribe called quest?
That’s crazy. These hipster’s are nothing more than an offshoot of backpack rap with club beats, that wear gay wife beaters and scarves around their necks with tight ass jeans. Their style is such a facade, then they get aggy when people group them ass hipster rap.
They say the records now embody pop music, because their def. of real hip-hop only lies in one particular style. Hip-hop does not have one style of rap and it is ever changing. They claim they are authentic, but its no more than a blatant jack off something that has been done before.
Their whole style is not anything new. Hipster style is fad, meaning they are regenerating a past style. Regenerating a past style has never sustained itself. It comes for a couple of years then bounces.
For something to sustain itself it has to be totally new and unheard of, and thus it takes shape and form. Hipster rap has not done that. They merely are re-filling a void that had left.
They claim rock dudes are coming up to them, and saying “this is what hip-hop, should sound like”. Of course those people would say that. They lived in an era, when the music they heard dominated the waves. These dudes are like 35 of course they are not going to like what’s on the radio. It’s crazy son.

the clothing these people wear has nothing to do with anything. 80’s and 90’s style is popular right now across a number of genre’s and subgenres. if you’re rocking it, it doesn’t make you’re cooler than anybody else, but it also doesn’t automatically make you wack. At the end of the day, the song Cappuccino sounds good to me and brings me back to an era that I loved. the clothing these people wear has nothing to do with anything. 80’s and 90’s style is popular right now across a number of genre’s and subgenres. if you’re rocking it, it doesn’t make you’re cooler than anybody else, but it also doesn’t automatically make you wack. At the end of the day, the song Cappuccino sounds good to me and brings me back to an era that I loved.
