Jay-Z Strikes $150 Million Deal With Live Nation
After months of speculation over his next big venture, Jay shows his hand.
The New York Times reports that later this week he will finalize a monumental $150 million deal with concert behemoth Live Nation.
The deal answers a question that had been circling through the rap world for months: Where would Jay-Z take his next corporate role? As part of the arrangement, Live Nation would finance the start-up of a venture that would be an umbrella for his outside projects, which are expected to include his own label, music publishing, and talent consulting and managing. Live Nation is expected to contribute $5 million a year in overhead for five years, with another $25 million available to finance Jay-Z’s acquisitions or investments, according to people in the music industry briefed on the agreement. The venture, to be called Roc Nation, will split profits with Live Nation.
The overall package for Jay-Z also includes an upfront payment of $25 million, a general advance of $25 million that includes fees for his current tour, and advance payment of $10 million an album for a minimum of three albums during the deal’s 10-year term, these people said. A series of other payments adding up to about $20 million is included in exchange for certain publishing, licensing and other rights. Jay-Z said Live Nation’s consolidated approach was in sync with the emerging potential “to reach the consumer in so many different ways right now.” He added: “Everyone’s trying b

LiveNation is trying to establish the way that the music business is progressing. Next year, Ticketmaster is in trouble because LiveNation has an exclusivity deal with them that will end next year about this time and they are currently developing their own ticket sales and distribution business that will kill the game.
Most majors lately have been trying to sign new artists to deals that ensure that they are involved in the profits from touring and merchandising and most artists don’t go for this stuff but the LiveNation model includes major profit sharing and business ownership opportunities for the artists but they can still make money off of everything involving that artist. This should serve as inspiration to many who are trying to develop their own independent lane aside from major label support and trying to continue to perpeuate the old tired music business model.
Creativity not only in music is important but also in marketing and modeling the way to be profitable.

Live Aid was organized the first time in 1895. That was Bob Geldof’s big event to raise awareness and funds for famine relief in Ethiopia and that was when “We are the world” was recorded.
Live Nation is a spin-off from Clear Channel that was formed in 2005, consisting of former Clear Channel Entertainment and lots of concert and event promotion companies they have acquired, in the US and across the world. They’re pretty much buying every live show/concert/event promotion company in the world.
Now, since Live Nation are experts in doing big-ass events, they might or might not have been involved in the organization of Live 8 and Live Earth, but Live Aid was done 20 years before the company even had that name. So, it’s rather Live Nation “biting [Live Aid] and using their artists at the same time”.

Hov made millions off investments on the strength of having a good investment team, lets not be silly now. He’s definetly a very smart individual, no question. He understands the fundamentals of business, clearly. He is savy and very charismatic but when it comes to artist development and launching succesfull careers and projects, he’s tanked.
Show me proof of anything that stats the opposite? Any succesfull artist on Def Jam during his stay already had star power. He developed nobody, everyone he signed TANKED. Period.

Congrats to Shawn on the deal but I was hoping he would go for 100% ownership for his next venture. He has to pay LN back plus split the profits. Is having a piece of something big better than owning something small? I’m sure he owns 100% of a lot of smaller business but he needs to do it big himself then sell it like Viacom Bob, that’s a billion dollar deal; then do it again.
Just for the record I brought Beans (disappointed), Blu (the fuckin’ best (nada). But Blu’s distribution was all fucked up and Beans is obviously not a boss or even a hustler like we were lead to believe.
