TSG Says Times Piece Based on Forged Documents
The Smoking Gun website has published an extensive investigative piece that claims the report by L.A. Times writer Chuck Philips on the Tupac shooting at the Quad is based on forged documents. The article is pretty extensive, but it basically asserts that James Sabatino (pictured above), the mafia connected conman who was supposedly in on the ‘Pac hit, forged the FBI documents that Philips based much of his story on.
And while Sabatino claims to have been provided the FBI reports during the discovery phase of a 2002 criminal case, a federal law enforcement official involved in that successful prosecution told TSG that the probe was headed by Secret Service representatives and that the FBI had no role whatsoever in the case. The official added that, at the time, investigators "had no inkling" of Sabatino’s supposed role in the rap music world and never saw investigative reports detailing his purported involvement with hip-hop’s leading figures or its assorted bloody disputes.
If TSG’s claims are true, then of course it blows Philips entire investigation out of the water. According to TSG, they reached out to Times managing editor Marc Duvoisin who says that the paper is launching its own investigation into the documents. I emailed Philips for a response, which I will add to this post should he choose to reply. In the meantime, read the piece and draw your own conclusions.

Everybody was doing the harlem shake. Wasn’t nothing wrong with it, It just ran it’s course. It’s plenty of new dances that are worst than the harlem shake.
SMH at anyone breakdancing in a club, that shit is corny and for chinese folks.
Just like everyone and they mama hitting the soulja boy dance, Dancing has always been part of Urban music. It’s only been recent history where people think they too cool to dance.
I mean if you trying to hit off all these moves, you might wanna tone it down. But getting crunk and hyphy, that’s what people want to do.

Chicken noodle soup=porch monkey dancing. It’s an exact variation.
The harlem shake had different variations, you got the niggas who went wild wit, or you could just be cool with the harlem shake. Some cats just took it a lil too far.

Some nigga came into the office and one of the mangers told him to take off his sunglasses because he couldn’t see his eyes. Nigga got buck, and said I don’t take my glasses off for nobody”. The manager or someone rose up like he was about to steal on him, and the dude with the glasses started running out the door.
Lol, niggas started fighting in the lobby. That shit is wild.

The east coast used to have all the fly honey’s. Now it’s scarce and scattered.
They all flocked to the south and the west.

[…] L.A. Times reporter Chuck Philips and his supervisor, deputy managing editor Marc Duvoisin, have both issued apologies over what now appears to be a completely erroneous report on the 1994 shooting of Tupac Shakur. Questions about the report, which implicated Diddy and Jimmy Henchmen in Pac’s ambush, started to arise yesterday after the Smoking Gun published an article questioning Philips’ source documents. Philips said he sought to check the authenticity of the documents with the U.S. attorney’s office in New York, which had handled the investigation of the attack on Shakur, and with a retired FBI agent, but did not directly ask the FBI about them. The U.S. attorney’s office declined to comment, while the former FBI agent said the documents appeared legitimate, Philips said. […]

One of the other writers on Highbrid Nation did a story on Pac and the craziness surrounding that shooting and I wondered what other were saying about this. It seems to me that this is something the news media refuses to let go. Everyone wants to be the one who solves the crime. In reality what are the chances of us solving a 15 year old crime? And in the end does it matter? That shooting did not lead to Pac’s death. He recovered from that shooting. So what’s the fuss about?

[…] Fresh off their potentially career-ending exposé on the true origins of Chuck Philips’ Tupac story, The Smoking Gun has set its sights on Akon’s alleged past as the leader of a lucrative car theft ring. I just got finished reading their report, and if it’s as accurate as it sounds, somebody has a lot of explaining to do. While the performer’s rap sheet does include a half-dozen arrests, Akon has only been convicted of one felony, for gun possession. That 1998 New Jersey case ended with a guilty plea, for which the singer was sentenced to three years probation. Another 1998 bust, this one in suburban Atlanta, has been seized upon by Akon and transformed into the big case that purportedly sent him to prison (thanks to his snitching cohorts) for three fight-filled years. In reality, Akon was arrested for possession of a single stolen BMW and held in the DeKalb County jail for several months before prosecutors dropped all charges against him. […]
