Rick Ross Outsells Snoop by 60K?

How is that even possible? You’re telling me that "Boss" was a bigger record that "Sensual Seduction"? You know that I’m not a big Ross fan by any means, but I’ll admit that he had some joints on this album. But no way did I see him sonning Calvin like this. Somebody needs to walk over to Def Jam and check Gabe’s office for surplus cases of Trilla and shredded Best Buy receipts.
Final tallies for this week’s debuts:
Rick Ross - Trilla 198,956
Snoop Dogg - Ego Trippin’ 136,943
Fat Joe - The Elephant In The Room 46,260

Nikki Jean is as hot as an Eskimo running a marathon in the sahara..

Joe will make more money off his though right? How does that Koch shit work?
March 19th, 2008 at 11:14 am
you gotta think though. “Boss” is much bigger RIGHT NOW. Sensual Seduction came out a minute ago, and the latter videos/singles aint getting play like Boss is right now.
I am shocked, though… very shocked.
March 19th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Sensual Seduction was popping off in December though. That Too Short/F.A.B. single hasn’t had the amount of buzz Boss and Maybach provided for Ross. That’s my take.

I read an interview with Keith Murray on unkut.com some months back where he said that at Koch he was getting less money than he did on a major.
Maybe he sold less records, maybe he negotiated a bullshit contract, but I read it like he was saying an artist doesn’t make as much at Koch, full stop, which kind of goes against everything that Cam and Joe put out there.

^the numbers dont lie. joe put up respectable numbers. You cant compare free downloads to actual record sales.
the reason why a record label move to digital downloads may not work is because a lot of people dont trust giving their visa or mastercard numbers up online. If if it was possible to purchase a code from a local bodega that allows you to download that may work better. It would be something like a scratch off with the download code.

$$
i don’t believe he cares much about the music, he’s trying to keep his name alive so he can stay somewhat relevant.
^^Maybe that’s true, but when you think about it rap music is all he knows for the most part. What is a retired rapper supposed to do when their careers are finished? There’s no rappers 401k or retirement fund…LOL! I guess Snoop could try to become an actor or something, but truthfully he’s not that good at it. He could pull a Kwame and go behind the scenes as a producer or something I guess?

^the numbers dont lie. joe put up respectable numbers. You cant compare free downloads to actual record sales.
the reason why a record label move to digital downloads may not work is because a lot of people dont trust giving their visa or mastercard numbers up online. If if it was possible to purchase a code from a local bodega that allows you to download that may work better. It would be something like a scratch off with the download code.

46,260 copies X $7 per copy (according to that village voice article) =
approx $320,000 in take home pay for joe first week
^ ^
outta that $7, Joe is paying for all the marketing and promotion of his CD, for the studio costs and paying producers (and cameo rappers and singers) to record it, etc
it’s $7 gross, not net
he might take home around $3/unit if he gets dirt cheap beats and cameos plus love (dscounts) on the studio time

I’ve seen a lot of talk on here from people who talk like they “know” the Industry….
Def Jam and Interscope merging? - LOL - Nah….not happening
But I do agree: Snoop was hotter back in December - it took TOO LONG for Ego Trippin’ to come out. The follow-up singles have not been as hot as “Maybach Music” and “Luxury Tax,” judging by the online response to those songs.
And I know people hate on Def Jam, Interscope and the other majors, and say everyone should be doing deals at Koch - but ya’ll know Khaled got a label deal at Def Jam, right?
And yeah, I think we all wish Freeway and Ghost would have gotten more promotion - both those records deserved more attendion!

i’m always bewildered when people say lupe fell off
did he fall off when he made “dumb it down,” once of the most lyrical joints in the last couple years?
or “hip hop saved my life,” which to me had some of the best storytelling since slick rick?
or did he fall off with “go go gadget flow” which had the best double time flow in the game since twista?
i mean in category after category, dude just merks it. he never gets in the booth and spits wack shit and he never raps about moving drugs or shooting people when in fact he did that shit and i know cats from the west side who attest to it — whereas 98% of these rappers never chopped a ki and never squeezed a trigger
and i’m not glorifying that shit but i’m saying that people should applaud the dude who made it out of the bullshit and then raps positively rather than bragging about it like it’s some fucking achievement
i mean whatevs - everybody can’t like everybody but i’m just interested as to why some peeps think he fell off when i think he’s actually getting better

I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY THAT THE LABEL BOUGHT BACK ALBUMS.
FOR WHAT???
WOULDN’T THAT BE COUNTER PRODUCTIVE SEEING AS IT WOULD COST MORE TO BUY THEM BACK???
ESPECIALLY IN THIS CLIMATE WHERE MONEY IS TIGHT.
AGAIN, FOR WHAT???
TO KEEP APPEARANCES???
THAT WOULD BE THE ONLY REASON (FOR A GUY ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN AT LEAST)………..AND A RETARDED REASON AT THAT.

Congrats to ROSSSSSS. But Snoop Doggs place in hip-hop is cemented. I think BOSS is crackin right now, and Here in L.A. Sensual seduction Wasn’t recived as well by the hardcore snoop fans as much as the pop or top 40 fans. But they both made good albums so you cant go wrong either way
March 19th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
please find the surplus boxes in someones office, I havent heard Maybach music heavy in the streets like that! Life of the Party is the SHIT! its CRAZY! im from miami and cant believe this shit! Ross is not that HOT! Snoop is still the MAN DAMNIT!
March 19th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I fucks with ross..All that andre 3000 shit snoop was doin on this album, come on ?? I don’t know why people though snoop was gon outsell Ross..Sensual seduction was a club song..that shit wasn’t gon sell no albums..”The boss” is a monster right now..If he woulda stuck with “speeding” as the single to intro his album,he wouldn’t have moved as many units..But he did the right thing,Plus the other 2 hottest joints(maybach music and luxury tax) were leaked on the internet..U can say Def Jam bought records if u want,I’d say, they pushed the right music to get people interested
March 20th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Ross kill’d the hard tracks and the production is on point. But anyone else feel like I don’t need lovey/bust a nut songs from Ricky? Ewww.
Also agree - Polow is a BEAST on Production but needs to keep his ass out of the booth and out of Magazines. No doubt promo is super important but he comes off way too tough and slimey… I believe you but I’m just saying. Respect to your beats.
Joe you tried but unless it’s a collabo you lose… You’re fell into the Ja Rule trap 50 set up. Now you’re a joke.
Snoop you lost by ditching Dre. You don’t need him? I would have copped the album if I knew there was a Dre Banger. Otherwise I treat that like a No Limit release.
Rappers learn your spot and rep hard - the public will follow that more that the “hop on what’s hot for TRL/106″.

I don’t think people understand the difference between having KOCH as your distributor and signing to a major label like Def Jam. KOCH isn’t even a record company, Fat Joe made and paid for his album up front independently. Well probably not entirely by himself, but through some primarily independent means. So he paid for his studio time, security, videos, etc. The typical album budget is around $3-4 million.
So independently Fat Joe probably got around $7 bucks per album, because an album sells wholesale for $8 dollars. Then the distributor (KOCH) takes their cut, around 10%, and then Fat Joe keeps the rest. He has to pay back all that shit by himself though. He has to do all the marketing for the album by himself.
Rick Ross on the other hand, gets a big advance check at the beginning of his project, probably around $750k or so, and then the album paid for all his security, videos, studio time, food, hotels, all that shit. The different is he only gets royalties on the project, around 12%. So like a dollar an album. That 12% percent has to pay back the ENTIRE album budget, including the advance check. So he needs to sell like a million records before he recoups anything. Ross however gets to keep that $750k advance check no matter what.
If Elephant in the Room doesn’t sell at least 300k though, he’s gonna be owing some people some money himself. Or at least Terror Squad records is going to owe, and by Terror Squad Records I mean the desk that Fat Joe keeps in his garage.

The dude Rick Ross is a motivational speaker on the low, I mean have you heard the Port o album or this one, he is a sneeky with it, him and Jeezy are that type of motivational rappers, their beats and everything. Fat Joe is sick though, his album is ridiculous, he is the most underrated rapper ever
He tore down Sofa Lounge (Jimmy’s Bronx Cafe) last week, he jutt came through with a million Boriqua and killed it, sad to see no Geddy though, He got on stage and murdered, the dude has hits, you have to admit, he than gave a show, even though waiting on line forever was stupid, cause it was still more room in the place, except V.I.P where the strippers were, ti was nuts in there, it was like 30 strippers in there, either way, Joe got on stage did his thing, We Want War, from the new album Elephant In The Room (In Stores Now) as well as clips from the other albums, he than pulled the cat out of the bag saying the reason he got into hip hop the thing that inspired him was “South Bronx” than KRS One comes out and totally kills, Joe says he wasnt the first to beef with heavy weights from Queens, and than “The Bridge is Over” comes on, the crowd went nuts, and it was way more ladies than guys in there, I heard they was charging $60 to get in and they had to shut in down cause there were too many people outside, than Joey says the man who helped him with his flow, “Greg N.I.C.E” from Nice and Smooth came out and was energetic as hell, that dude is nuts, than Joey hit em with Slick Rick and the crowd again was crazy, Rick jewels were crazy, but Joey wasnt finished, he says everyone keeps saying why is he always down south he says cause its love down there and than you hear it “Every Day Im Hustlin” Rick Ross comes out and hammers the crowd, Funk Flex was on the wheels and it was defenitly a great night for Hip Hop in the place where it all started
