Really, I don’t know. It’s not my scene. I don’t dig the bullet-proof vest in the club look. But from what I can tell, no Grime worth copping is available in records shops. It’s all heavy underground, homemade shit that kids pass around or hear on pirate radio stations, they might pick up a promo 12″ or two here and there, but you’re not likely to find a Grime section of CD’s in Virgin Megastore, except maybe the Channel U joint.
Maybe Romez knows more about that music than me.

Last weekend I saw kids “live in the flesh” doing the hipster thing. They looked fucking ridiculous. See, if you do it right, you can dress in that hipster style and actually pull it off. If you’re famous, have a stylist and someone who can tailor your clothes to fit you the right way. If you just try to pull it off with random articles of clothing from Goodwill and your closet, shit can ugly real quick. Theres almost no room for error when you try to do the hipster thing.

I saw Sway a year or two ago in the city… dood had some heat… he passed me a mixtape of his where he goes back and forth with Sway from the wake-up show… funny shit…
I know pirate radio is huge out there… I remember hearing something about how cats were making beats out there using playstations and what not… i’ve always been a jungle enthusiast… I love me some mid 90’s ragga and jump-up… it’s all about the bass…

What hipster rap really is:
It’s nothing more than a post packaged form of Back pack rap, with updated funk beats and upbeat sounds. This time they are not really talking about conscious mumbo jumbo, but the everyday man with street life and parties and bullshit combined. It straddles the line between conscious and street.
Now the hipster movement adds swagger to their rhymes which separates it from the back pack rappers, and they also add swagger to their clothes. The only thing is that these cats are still rapping like they are in 92-96, and it comes off bland and uninspiring.
They are recreating a new age hip-hop retro movement which is straight trash. These are the dudes that get no bitches in highschool that try to rap. The difference is that they want all this swag but there is none in their lyrics and rhyme style. It still comes off as the same old saturated shit, That has been done to death. They are recreating anything new.
The back pack movement was a hot New and creative movement, it differed from the gangsta style. This hipster movement is just a copycat.

I’m happy the industry is dead and nobody’s really selling records in rap anymore
2006 saw a nice amount of platinum albums
2007 saw maybe 3 platinum rap albums and a lot of gold albums
2008: no one will reach gold by the end of they year. at all. except MAYBE Eminem if he drops.
cats is starting to see that rap aint easy money no more, and dudes will start putting their all into their music. or atleast trying to prove that they make good music. people been saying for a while that it’ll come full circle, come back to being about the art

the fact is this….everything is cyclical
whether you call this “hipster rap” or not, it will, just like everything else, come and go….
the point of music/art/anything creative is to inspire discussion…that’s how you create longevity and keep yourself relevant. so now it’s up to Tanya Morgan to continue to put that music out there to keep people talking and decide whether they want to create their own niche or be a part of someone else’s niche….i wish them the best of luck in this crazy industry
