[...] Bronx rapper, Mickey Factz, recently caught major feelings from Nah Right’s Eskay when he was classified as a hipster rapper. He went to great pains to categorically reject the notion as did the Kidz In The Hall when confronted with that same notion. Lord knows an aspiring rapper wouldn’t want to be associated with white upper middle class douche bags in thick black framed glasses (Full Disclosure: I wear black framed glasses quite regularly, myself) even though they are often fond of those same thick black framed glasses himself. Hipster rap has become short-hand in recent times for a retro aesthetic that leans on a late ‘80s/early ‘90s sound and culture. The Cool Kids, Wale, The Knux, Jay Electronica, Lupe Fiasco, MickeyFactz and the Kidz In The Hall all have an aesthetic and style that leans heavily on what is being dubbed as “hipster rap.” Pretty much all of them hate it. I’m not necessarily sure that’s a good thing. I think they should embrace it. [...]

[...] Tja. Should I be classified as Hipster Rap…Nah, right?”. Kidz In The Hall reageerde niet veel anders.
Exactly.

That’s how sad shit has become. Ninjas will straight disregard any MC because he doesn’t dress up to your “ideal” of what an MC should look like.

And I think some people fail to, or don’t want to, realize that maybe an MCs style of dress is related to their environment. I rather have these dude staying true to their roots than walking around in a style that really doesn’t appeal to them.

@ greens - it's a hybrid. it's definitely cuban property. when obama shuts the prison camps down and scales back the military base, the land reverts to cuba. smh @ america setting up bases though and deeming it "american soil" lol. fuck outta here with that. i swear sometimes i feel like i've never been proud of this country (c) michelle obama with edits for clarity heh heh

@ m-roc: i'm sure you know about satchelofgravel.com but if not, peep it. shit is right up your alley. and 1,000% co-sigs. for 4 brands to team up on a design on a fucking american apparel t-shirt, gtfoh. these same cats will be milking some other scene next year and another one the year after. and the saddest thing is the design will be biting the gucci colors and the gucci logo. so you know what? thanks very much -- i'll just cop that gucci shirt. shit will look better and last longer and i won't be sonning myself by buying it. in three years the gucci shirt will still be fly but that "collabo" shit won't fetch me 8 bucks on ebay.

Dang eskay, you gon' have cats dedicating whole diss songs to bloggers and/or blogs now huh? lool...guess he took offense to being considered 'hipster rap?'

I mean I see where he's coming from but I can also see how the classification tag is put on him, considering his choice of beats and overall packaging/presentation.

@ greens — almost but not quite. since i’m not going to “cuba proper” (i.e. the communist part) and i’m staying only on the military base (which still has ridick beaches btw (it’s fully a part of cuba, just cordoned off)), i’m going via top secret federal government clearance (which took a LONG-ASS time to get b/c i’m muslim and the govt’s background check game is mean). shit, i didn’t even know the treasury dept. gives licenses for people to travel there — must be hard to get. everyone i know who has gone has had to go through canada (which you also mentioned).

^ ahh.. then TECHNICALLY you arent going to Cuba, as Gitmo is US property..although as a nice fuck you to the the US the Cuban government has never cashed any of the "rent" checks the Us paid for use of the land.
I never made it out to the part of the island, but i heard it was beautiful.

@ chea, BIG co-sign...way too many little dime-a-dozen brands in the market right now, and half of them are just T-shirts and bullshit mass-produced accessories with logos slapped on (milkcrate athletics can eat a fat dick). the only people rocking all-over print fluorescent stuff are soulja boy and...soulja boy.

another thing i noticed is way too many "collaborations" between brands that should really just stay apart. everywhere i look it's "new collaboration! brand X brand X brand just designed a new toilet bowl cover/calculator case/tea cozy!"

all i’m sayin is that hipster fashion and hip hop fashion are a little closer than most people seem to think.

^

oh of course

but the process has had enormous growing pains

mainly because TIs and nerdy asians with no attachment to the culture have tried to flood the market with hot gah-bage

once shit calms down though (and it already has -- you can see that ye and lupe have abandoned the skittles-colored ish for neutrals and all-blacks and grays) and all the shitty, leachy brands fall to the wayside there will be another renaissance

too many vultures in the game now though -- it still needs time to cool off

ya’ll know what the fuck we mean by hipster rap, don’t play dumb.

and I don’t have a problem with it personally, it’s just a means of classification.

^^^
IMO
its like the different weird type of rap. rappers that use rock/electronica music in they beats and rap about, certain clothes, shoes, etc.

its just a different feel and of couse they wear different types of clothes...

I dig any and all...I always have the open mindedness like fuxie always says...I listen and like what I like...thats it.

so if you really think about it, hipster fashion is just recycling 80’s/early 90’s hip hop fashion…before all that XXXL cross colours shit came through
^^

Exactly.

That's how sad shit has become. Ninjas will straight disregard any MC because he doesn't dress up to your "ideal" of what an MC should look like.

And I think some people fail to, or don't want to, realize that maybe an MCs style of dress is related to their environment. I rather have these dude staying true to their roots than walking around in a style that really doesn't appeal to them.

"let’s be honest nobody’s rocking emo jeans and rapping about clapping people (though skateboard p raps about chopping up ki’s with some tight-ass jeans on — i think we can all agree he needs more people)."

LOL & co-sign

all i'm sayin is that hipster fashion and hip hop fashion are a little closer than most people seem to think.
