BUT

like 90% of those mixtape rappers, he’s a little on the one dimensional side (crack, guns, etc.). he does have some introspective joints though.

If you are truly good enough, the hype wonâ€™t effect your shit, you just live up to it. Like most people, I had heard Live at The BBQ in 91, and then Halftime a year or so later. By the time Serch signed Nas, he was already being talked about as the prodigal son. The hype was stupid for illmatic, that shit didnâ€™t just spring out of nowhere. And the rest is history. A legend was born.

The difference nowadays is that you hear too much from a dude before his album drops. With Nasty Nas (or Hov, or Wu-Tang) there was no serious mixtape business, no DVD business. Just a few guest appearances or a white lable promo single here or there. Now, we get saturated with music from the next great white hope (so they can sign to a major for millions) and have to put up with years of hype and sub-standard material before they drop the finished article.

Joe- funny you should ask that, as Ive found myself listening to plies quite a bit lately. by choice at that. granted.. he isnt the second coming of Rakim on the mic– his lyrics, rhyme patterns and vocabulary all could use MUCH improvement, he cusses more than me and im the OG gutter mouth (no) and I hear him say N***a and Cracker more than a KKK conference of a Triscuit factory worker…. BUT.. i like duke, i think he def comes from a real, honest to god street perspective that, maybe its cus I grew up with cats like him, that has a ring of truth to it, which is nice in todays rap world. He touches on all subjects which is also a good look.. i think with some major A&R and artist development work.. he could be a solid B level rapper
