GRETNA — The murder trial of rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller was pushed back to June 9 after attorneys in the case said that some problems concerning witnesses had cropped up.
Miller, 36, is charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 12, 2002, death of Steve Thomas, 16, a fan of the rapper’s who was shot in the chest at the now-closed Platinum Club in Harvey.
A Jefferson Parish jury convicted Miller in September 2003, but months later Judge Martha Sassone awarded him a new trial after finding that prosecutors improperly withheld background information on three defense witnesses.
Jury selection was set to begin Feb. 11 in his new trial, but after meeting privately in Sassone’s chambers Tuesday for about 90 minutes, the prosecutors and defense attorney walked into open court and jointly asked to push the date to June 9.
Miller is under house arrest as a condition of his $500,000 bond, but has been given wide latitude, including leaving his residence to promote his music and a book he wrote while incarcerated in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center

NEWARK — A 17-year-old will be tried as an adult for what prosecutors said was his “active role†in the killings of three young people in a Newark schoolyard last summer, a judge ruled on Tuesday.
The suspect, Alexander Alfaro, is one of six people arrested in the Aug. 4 murders, which the authorities have said might have started as a robbery attempt. Prosecutors also have acknowledged that the murders had gang undertones.
The three victims, Iofemi Hightower, 20; Terrance Aeriel, 18; and Dashon Harvey, 20, were shot to death at close range. Natasha Aeriel, Mr. Aeriel’s sister, survived the attack and is under the state’s protection as a witness, according to a spokesman for the Essex County prosecutor, Paula T. Dow.

Markel Ray Morgain, a 25-year-old Vallejo resident, has been charged with murder with the enhancement for the use of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Stockton resident Corey Tidwell in the early evening of June 18.
Morgain’s attorney Patrick Cannon said during his opening statements in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez Tuesday that Morgain was not the shooter and witnesses had not described the shooter as looking like Morgain.
Shortly before the shooting, Morgain and Tidwell were reportedly playing dice in the patio area of a vacant apartment at 1244 Trigger Road in the Rodeo area of Contra Costa County, Yancey said.
Tidwell allegedly won a game and took some money from Morgain, Yancey said. Upset about the loss, Morgain allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Tidwell. Tidwell raised his hands and asked Morgain not to shoot him, Yancey said.
Morgain allegedly shot Tidwell through the hand. As Tidwell was running away, Morgain allegedly shot him again in the back.
Tidwell fell to the ground in the parking lot of the housing development with a bullet in his spine.
Morgain allegedly walked up to Tidwell and shot him four more times in the head at close range. He then allegedly went through Tidwell’s pockets, took back his money and dropped the gun in a garbage can as he fled the area, Yancey said.
Cannon, however, said that on June 18, Morgain, a young black man, had a hairstyle known as “twisties.”

The High Court in Glasgow heard 35-year-old Paul Steadward snapped when his colleague Steven McArdle, a father of two, came back 15 minutes late from a tea break.
When McArdle went out for a cigarette break at 4:30 a.m., Steadward grabbed a 10-inch knife from his locker and followed him out. Steadward then stabbed 26-year-old McArdle four times.

GRETNA — The murder trial of rapper Corey “C-Murder” Miller was pushed back to June 9 after attorneys in the case said that some problems concerning witnesses had cropped up.
Miller, 36, is charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 12, 2002, death of Steve Thomas, 16, a fan of the rapper’s who was shot in the chest at the now-closed Platinum Club in Harvey.
A Jefferson Parish jury convicted Miller in September 2003, but months later Judge Martha Sassone awarded him a new trial after finding that prosecutors improperly withheld background information on three defense witnesses.
Jury selection was set to begin Feb. 11 in his new trial, but after meeting privately in Sassone’s chambers Tuesday for about 90 minutes, the prosecutors and defense attorney walked into open court and jointly asked to push the date to June 9.
Miller is under house arrest as a condition of his $500,000 bond, but has been given wide latitude, including leaving his residence to promote his music and a book he wrote while incarcerated in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center

NEWARK — A 17-year-old will be tried as an adult for what prosecutors said was his “active role†in the killings of three young people in a Newark schoolyard last summer, a judge ruled on Tuesday.
The suspect, Alexander Alfaro, is one of six people arrested in the Aug. 4 murders, which the authorities have said might have started as a robbery attempt. Prosecutors also have acknowledged that the murders had gang undertones.
The three victims, Iofemi Hightower, 20; Terrance Aeriel, 18; and Dashon Harvey, 20, were shot to death at close range. Natasha Aeriel, Mr. Aeriel’s sister, survived the attack and is under the state’s protection as a witness, according to a spokesman for the Essex County prosecutor, Paula T. Dow.
Investigators have said that at least two of the victims were badly cut during the attack

Markel Ray Morgain, a 25-year-old Vallejo resident, has been charged with murder with the enhancement for the use of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Stockton resident Corey Tidwell in the early evening of June 18.
Morgain’s attorney Patrick Cannon said during his opening statements in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez Tuesday that Morgain was not the shooter and witnesses had not described the shooter as looking like Morgain.
Shortly before the shooting, Morgain and Tidwell were reportedly playing dice in the patio area of a vacant apartment at 1244 Trigger Road in the Rodeo area of Contra Costa County, Yancey said.
Tidwell allegedly won a game and took some money from Morgain, Yancey said. Upset about the loss, Morgain allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Tidwell. Tidwell raised his hands and asked Morgain not to shoot him, Yancey said.
Morgain allegedly shot Tidwell through the hand. As Tidwell was running away, Morgain allegedly shot him again in the back.
Tidwell fell to the ground in the parking lot of the housing development with a bullet in his spine.
Morgain allegedly walked up to Tidwell and shot him four more times in the head at close range. He then allegedly went through Tidwell’s pockets, took back his money and dropped the gun in a garbage can as he fled the area, Yancey said.
Cannon, however, said that on June 18, Morgain, a young black man, had a hairstyle known as “twisties.”

The High Court in Glasgow heard 35-year-old Paul Steadward snapped when his colleague Steven McArdle, a father of two, came back 15 minutes late from a tea break.
