im tired and frustrated with the same ol’ rap formula used by American MC’s anyway … british MC’s seem to not be as superficial as American MC’s lately …
^^^^
This is true. Reason being:
England is run by EMO songs. Emo songs are #1 CONSTANTLY over here. Thats the reason Kanye beat 50 out here.
Superficial shit isnt really successfull over here. Our music is super-emo’d out lol.
Amy & Coldplay wouldn’t have been the stars they are if they started in America…I dont think they would have got through the American system. They’d be KNOWN but only to musical elitists (SEE: Okayplayer).
And that goes for most of the stars out here…

It takes TIME and patience to listen to Nas. Folks today want insta-hits and easy access hooks and simplicity. Nas’ complexities and idioscracies in his rhymes forces the listener to pay attention. THIS is why he is either loved or hated. We want his beats to match his lyrical intensity. He feels the words are more important than the beat or at least equal. Rap today is the exact oppisite. Hip-Hop ALWAYS gave props to the beats, slices and breaks but once that slick talk started in ernest, M.C.’s have been trying to strike that perfect balance. Nas is an M.C.’s M.C. and he’s never been a casual listen.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Graduation is usually a happy time for U.S. high school seniors.
At Washington’s Ballou Senior High School, however, the normally celebratory mood is marked by sadness this spring.

Because what people (especially Hip-Hoppers) fail to realize is this:
Just because your an ill LYRICIST, doesnt mean your an ill ARTIST.
And vice versa. They’re two completely different things.

The whole “mush mouf” thing. Yeah, I could see that. But, you know how for those three minutes and some seconds, the rhymes meshed perfectly with the beat on some party shit? This song is it. Like, “I Just Wanna Love You” is the PERFECT party jawn but it’s exclusive and some folks couldn’t relate ’cause of cash restrictions. Plus it was one verse too long. “Hot In Herre” was almost perfect, but the simpleton rhymes and too familiar sample keeps it from perfection. But “Party Time”? Perfectly obscure but familiar sample, competently complex lyrical arrangement, RELATABLE and just long enough.

But you just kinda proved my point….
Picking beats to represent your sound correctly is ARTISTRY 101. Yeah, Nas is the greatest lyricist ever. But on an artistic level, he need guidence.
Getting it right for a FEW songs on every album aint a good record…Nas aint got that many to 10 albums (IMO), but if your JUST TALKING ABOUT LYRICS? He IS the top 10…

and whats this with picking beats? I mean.. somebody like.. ehhh… Fat Joe for instance, will pick some BANGERS… because those are the only songs he can really make. Singles.. heavy street bangers for the whip.. etc… and he needs the beat to drive his song.
As an emcee Nas lives in between his beats… so he needs beats with space. Production-wise, he doesn’t pick the greatest standalone tracks, but most of the time he’s picking joints that blend well with his style and what he’s trying to do.
For example… “Live Now” off of Streets Disciple. That beat might be boring with your average emcee rhyming over it. Or maybe “You’re the Man” on Stillmatic. Not everyone is gonna shine over a beat like that… but it should be about what the beat brings out of you, not just the beat alone.

For example… “Live Now†off of Streets Disciple. That beat might be boring with your average emcee rhyming over it. Or maybe “You’re the Man†on Stillmatic. Not everyone is gonna shine over a beat like that… but it should be about what the beat brings out of you, not just the beat alone.
**Even “I Gave You Power”, or “One Luv”…dude cooks up greatness from average ingredients, IMO…shit, “Blunt Ashes” was dope, despite aiight Chris Webber production…in that respect, he reminds me a lot of Common, who was also able to make an substantial impact with a lot of “ehhh” beats…

Beacuse the BEAT is 50% if not more of your SONG, which I’m gonna judge.
If your beats WACK (or wack FOR YOU), you just lost 50%.
Thats why beats are so important.
You cant name me ONE classic that has wack beats. I could name you alot of classics with sub-par lyrics though….
Thats why beats are so important. I hear the beat before I hear you rhyme. Its 50% of the song.

@ RIGZ –
I feel you. Obviously if a beat is whack it’s gonna be hard to listen to the song. But what I’m talking about is really dope songs that don’t necessarily have exceptional beats. The beats could be average… like… ehhh…. “I used to love H.E.R.” by Common. That beat isn’t mind blowing… but the song is dope. Sometimes the beat can be understated and the artist jumps on it and brings the song to life.
If i tried to name a classic with “whack” or “subpar” beats, you would disagree.. because if my theory is correct, the lyrics elevate your perception of the beat.. where the beat alone might not be as thrilling.. therefore you would perceive the beat to be better than I might if i’m judging it as an instrumental alone.

Like how Fat Joe is that cat that studied and sweated and worked(paid for it) on his craft only to get a “C+” and Jigga walks in the class from grindin’ all night and gets an “A+” on the “M.C. Test”. Yup…
Ironically, so will Jeff. I was more of a Jeff(D.J.) fan and he used to drive up and down 60th st. pumpin’ his new shit. He went from a Black Supra to Black M3 to Black M5. I saw him at a Sixers game, and I was like “We need a mix tape” . he was like I don’t see you up 6-0 no more.” I was like.”YOU don’t be up 6-0 no more.” Anywho, whenever I see him, it’s love. I haven’t seen Will in person in over 20 years.
*you know, that sounds hella gay when you type it out.*

… before record deals and videos, you had to rock a house party, or block party, or high school gym with just a mic and two turntables … if rap was stripped down to those bare essentials, NaS would have no where near the ability to move the crowd, as JayZ … and at its essence, thats what mc’ing is really about … 85% percent of the people would be, and are lost on NaS genius (sad but true) … JayZ is more universal and accessible … he can appeal to the “backpackers” without losing his core fanbase … NaS has only his core fan base left …

Slammin MC’s on cement
Cause verbally, I’m iller than a AIDS patient

Rappin sniper, speakin real words

resurrection is top 5 hiphop album production and rapping.
Rigz hit the Nas situation on the head. Great lyricist, but not the best artist. If he was a great artist he would have more flows than he does, or would have been able to choose better beats.
With that said, you cant front on him mastering his few flows to the point that he can hit you over the head with ridiculously good lyrics. Nothing wrong with focusing and being accurate or onpoint. OnPoint is the shizzle.
