im tired and frustrated with the same ol’ rap formula used by American MC’s anyway … british MC’s seem to not be as superficial as American MC’s lately …
^^^^
This is true. Reason being:
England is run by EMO songs. Emo songs are #1 CONSTANTLY over here. Thats the reason Kanye beat 50 out here.
Superficial shit isnt really successfull over here. Our music is super-emo’d out lol.
Amy & Coldplay wouldn’t have been the stars they are if they started in America…I dont think they would have got through the American system. They’d be KNOWN but only to musical elitists (SEE: Okayplayer).
And that goes for most of the stars out here…

… im a fan of the great Nasir Jones … he’s just past his prime … period … he garners minimal excitement these days … i have no beef with him as a Supreme poet … but he’s incredibly boring as an overall artist …
***all of the marquee emcees these days are in their 30s, late 20s…the m’fukkas supposedly in their prime are garbage for the most part, so whatcha sayin (c) EPMD- is it that he’s past his prime, or that he has nothing fresh to introduce to the game, and he shoulda gone out on a high note (c) Seinfeld…who IS @ the top of their game, right now? Jay Electronica? Termanology? Truth is, if we hear them enough, even if they remain consistent, the buzz will fade eventually…

The glisseningpussy chick has a hiphop TV show in chicago and other various hip hop orientated activities.
I don’t want to invite em over here and have them get the hate that’s aimed at me..The next 3 I invite I wont say i invited them…I’ll just have them lurk or whatever.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Graduation is usually a happy time for U.S. high school seniors.
At Washington’s Ballou Senior High School, however, the normally celebratory mood is marked by sadness this spring.

Because what people (especially Hip-Hoppers) fail to realize is this:
Just because your an ill LYRICIST, doesnt mean your an ill ARTIST.
And vice versa. They’re two completely different things.

The whole “mush mouf” thing. Yeah, I could see that. But, you know how for those three minutes and some seconds, the rhymes meshed perfectly with the beat on some party shit? This song is it. Like, “I Just Wanna Love You” is the PERFECT party jawn but it’s exclusive and some folks couldn’t relate ’cause of cash restrictions. Plus it was one verse too long. “Hot In Herre” was almost perfect, but the simpleton rhymes and too familiar sample keeps it from perfection. But “Party Time”? Perfectly obscure but familiar sample, competently complex lyrical arrangement, RELATABLE and just long enough.

But you just kinda proved my point….
Picking beats to represent your sound correctly is ARTISTRY 101. Yeah, Nas is the greatest lyricist ever. But on an artistic level, he need guidence.
Getting it right for a FEW songs on every album aint a good record…Nas aint got that many to 10 albums (IMO), but if your JUST TALKING ABOUT LYRICS? He IS the top 10…
He needs to call Serch…

and whats this with picking beats? I mean.. somebody like.. ehhh… Fat Joe for instance, will pick some BANGERS… because those are the only songs he can really make. Singles.. heavy street bangers for the whip.. etc… and he needs the beat to drive his song.
As an emcee Nas lives in between his beats… so he needs beats with space. Production-wise, he doesn’t pick the greatest standalone tracks, but most of the time he’s picking joints that blend well with his style and what he’s trying to do.
For example… “Live Now” off of Streets Disciple. That beat might be boring with your average emcee rhyming over it. Or maybe “You’re the Man” on Stillmatic. Not everyone is gonna shine over a beat like that… but it should be about what the beat brings out of you, not just the beat alone.

Beacuse the BEAT is 50% if not more of your SONG, which I’m gonna judge.
If your beats WACK (or wack FOR YOU), you just lost 50%.
Thats why beats are so important.

Thats why beats are so important. I hear the beat before I hear you rhyme. Its 50% of the song.

@ RIGZ –
I feel you. Obviously if a beat is whack it’s gonna be hard to listen to the song. But what I’m talking about is really dope songs that don’t necessarily have exceptional beats. The beats could be average… like… ehhh…. “I used to love H.E.R.” by Common. That beat isn’t mind blowing… but the song is dope. Sometimes the beat can be understated and the artist jumps on it and brings the song to life.
If i tried to name a classic with “whack” or “subpar” beats, you would disagree.. because if my theory is correct, the lyrics elevate your perception of the beat.. where the beat alone might not be as thrilling.. therefore you would perceive the beat to be better than I might if i’m judging it as an instrumental alone.

FUCK THE JAY VS NAS THING.
I’m saying:
Nas = the best lyricist ever in hip-hop. Lyricist.
Making good ALBUMS, defines you as an ARTIST. Not lyrics, not songs, not swagger, not nothing. But. YOUR ALBUM.
You dudes are bringing up SONGS, I’m talking about LPs…
You cant honestly sit here & tell me you think every Nas album is nice….Maybe I’m on a spaceship…I listen to most Nas LPs for the lyricism only. His bars & beats rarely gel together IMO.

Like how Fat Joe is that cat that studied and sweated and worked(paid for it) on his craft only to get a “C+” and Jigga walks in the class from grindin’ all night and gets an “A+” on the “M.C. Test”. Isn’t comparing Nas & Jay musically kinda like debating Michael Irvin vs. Randy Moss? In the end there’s no bad choice is there?
^^^
sorry but thats a bad comparison.. Moss vs T.O would be more appropos since they are both contemporaries adn deep threat (home run) receivers

Street’s disciple my raps are trifle
I shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle
Stampede the stage I leave the microphone split
Play Mr. Tuffy while I’m on some Pretty Tone shit
Verbal assassin my architect pleases
When I was twelve, I went to hell for snuffin Jesus
Nasty Nas is a rebel to America
Police murderer, I’m causin hysteria
My troops roll up with a strange force
I was trapped in a cage and let out by the Main Source
Swimmin in women like a lifeguard
Put on a bulletproof nigga I strike hard
Kidnap the President’s wife without a plan
And hangin niggaz like the Ku Klux Klan
I melt mics till the sound waves over
Before steppin to me you’d rather step to Jehovah
Slammin MC’s on cement
Cause verbally, I’m iller than a AIDS patient
I move swift and uplift
your mind shoot the gift when I riff in rhyme
Rappin sniper, speakin real words
My thoughts react, like Steven Spielberg’s
Poetry attacks, paragraphs punch hard
My brain is insane, I’m out to lunch God
Science is dropped, my raps are toxic
My voicebox locks and excels like a rocket

I’m saying that Marley Marl = One of the most underrated producers ever. He rarely gets mentioned on peoples GOAT producers lists.

whaddup nah….
resurrection is top 5 hiphop album production and rapping.
Rigz hit the Nas situation on the head. Great lyricist, but not the best artist. If he was a great artist he would have more flows than he does, or would have been able to choose better beats.
With that said, you cant front on him mastering his few flows to the point that he can hit you over the head with ridiculously good lyrics. Nothing wrong with focusing and being accurate or onpoint. OnPoint is the shizzle.
