1520 Sedgwick Tenants to Rappers: Ante Up
Yesterday the tenants of 1520 Sedgwick, Kool Herc and Senator Schumer held their press conference to unveil their plan to keep rents in the building affordable to residents. It turns out that the owner is asking $14 million and the tenants, through a private lender and city subsidies, can raise about $11 mil. So where’s the rest of the money going to come from?
Campbell [Herc] called on "all the Queen Latifahs and Will Smiths" to step up with some financial help Tuesday.
"We’re asking all those guys you see in Forbes magazine that are living hip hop to recognize this building," he said.
I’m sorry, but I don’t really see any wealthy rappers or record executives coming out of their pockets for this cause. If they were threatening to knock the building down, that would be one thing, but that’s not the case. Three million is alot of money, and to play devil’s advocate, what makes the people in this building any more imporatant that people in other former Mitchell-Lama properties across the city?
Of course, there is no difference, and all of these people deserve whatever help they can get, but try explaining that to the checkwriters. Should the Queen Latifah’s and the Will Smith’s help out? Sure, but I’m sure their are people all across the country in similar predicaments, some probably in Dana and Will’s home towns. The fact that hip-hop was "born" in this building is all well and good, but I don’t see that motivating anybody in the industry to reach into their pockets. Hopefully somebody will prove me wrong.

if the tenants agree to a public museum project on the grounds, sure, people SHOULD give their money. but if it’s just going to be some mixed income condos…wtf? if you’re right about it not being under threat of demolition, that is only a temporary thing, i.e. they could decide in 5 years to tear it down to put a mall over it. plus, i DO think the tenants should own it particularly if Kool Herc himself gets an ownership stake. if the $3 million gets the investor an ownership stake IN THE BUILDING WHERE HIP-HOP WAS BORN, isn’t that an investment? besides, it’s real estate in NYC, this ain’t a handout, it’s a GUARANTEED APPRECIATING ASSET…has real estate value in NYC ***ever*** gone down? NOPE!!!!! Money in the bank….
