Jay-Z & Apple Launching Record Label?

This is one we’ve heard before. Jay-Z leaves Def Jam, starts revolutionary digital record label with Apple. The first part has already happened and now Boy Genius Report is saying that the label is definitely a go.
I can tell you that Jay flat out denied this when somebody asked him about it back in October. The folks over at Crunchgear are already calling bullshit on BGR’s rumor, but they also offer some more realistic possibilties.
I can’t tell you if this is actually going to happen or not, but I do know that the music industry needs some kind of earth shattering wake up call. This may or may not turn out to be it. Something needs to be done sooner rather than later.
"It’s not the music; people ingest music the same way. It’s just that the model of selling CDs has changed. So doing things the typical way is not in the best interests of anyone and not exciting for me." - Jay to Billboard last month.

^^All labels will probably be digital in the future. There are digital labels all over the internet right now.
I could start talking about how some work, but I dont have all the details so Ill leave that alone.

my guess is that most of the sales would be online through itunes or another similar service, with a smaller amount of attention being paid to actual physical CDs…it’s a good idea actually. almost no one buys CDs anymore, so they’re seeing the market shift and shifting their sales strategy to compensate.

PREACH, brother, PREACH!
don’t even worry about the mom n pop stores in all of this, they’ve always been the ones who buy smaller runs of CDs anyway….if anything, the big box stores will phase out CDs because they won’t want to compete with online sales (that’s if online sales grow the way i think they will).

GM Danny Ferry’s efforts in the trade market have failed so far. There have been rumors of Larry Hughes being on the trading block recently, but executives around the NBA say he’s been on the block for two seasons.
It isn’t that the Cavs can’t trade Hughes; it’s that they can’t make a deal in which they’d get better in doing so. Because of his hefty contract, his current value is near junk-bond status. — Akron Beacon-Journal
An e-mailer who’s had some good information before wrote last week to say the Bulls and Cavs were discussing Kirk Hinrich and Ben Wallace for Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes.
I’ve been unable to confirm if there have been such discussions. But I know the Cavs have locker-room and chemistry chaos. Damon Jones and Ira Newble declined to enter games last week, and the Cavs are desperate to deal Hughes. — Chicago Tribune

I don’t know what that would really change if this happened. Jay Z is already huge, Apple is already #1 in digital distribution, they could both just change what they wanted to now if they were going to change something. They are HUGE names, apple to the entire entertainment industry and Jay Z to hip-hop and the music biz, what are they going to do together that they aren’t doing now? Not that exciting. Check out my site. I think I have an answer to the industries cry for help, though it can only be done by indie labels, if a major tried it then we would really have a something to watch!

Whats the difference between a digital label and a label that distributes music both digitally and in physical form??? What exactly is this label going to do?? I mean Itunes is already the digital distribution norm as far as downloading music legally goes. Amazon also offers DRM free music for like 99 cents a track and like $7.99 an album. You can burn it as many times as you want and transfer it to any mp3 player.
Or is jay going to offer exclusive digital downloads that aren’t available on cd’s for less than itune’s competitors, that would be tight. The thing is people want DRM free type downloads like that shit amazon got. That way what you buy is transferable to any cd or mp3 player etc, not locked to one pc and ipod.
whatever though, I only album that i paid for in 07 was The Cool. AG was a coaster.

All the artist on Def Jam who have done good were already successful and didnt need him. Plus you always gotta look at artists who try to run labels.. it hardly ever works and his music is not even great anymore. 38, 39 however old he is talking about hustlin and street shit. Come on man lets grow up. I think I will take my label digital, would not need permission from anybody to move anything, it cuts down on the whole distibute and shit thing and I would not have to pay for content that was not purchased and everything else is digital so why not, the distibutors now are itunes, rhapsody, yahoo, msn, napster and the like, so not having music for sale traditionally is not a problem and when people want to listen in their car, they just burn a cd anyway, but some people will always buy cd’s just like some always buy vinyl and others rock out to tapes and than there is the 8 track player, there is a market for everything, the question, if Jay do? If he does, everyone else will, he will take Rocafella with him, he needs to hire Dame to run that ship, and everyone else will go along wit him, Diddy, he sees the dollars he sees the money saved in not pressing up a million units only to sell only 500k like wit Press Play, everybody loved the singles he could of saved alot of time and money if it was just digital, imagine PRESS PLAY (Start of Digita Revolution) but Hov will do something he is not hinting for nothing, look at all his moves they always play out in front of your face and he tells you ahead of time (All I need is …Like Meth and Mary, Marvin and Tammy) Got B, took over the TV and than the world SMART DUDE

Online music is bad for everyone. first off online record labels are not hard anybody can start a label and second the Internet has become the Major label in a way.. artist shouldnt be looking to be signed anytime soon.
The only people that matter in music is artist that create CONTENT or CONTENT controllers like managers or producers, online record labels dont need staff to run, so there goes more jobs lost. Advertising is the only thing that matters for online stores or online record labels.
Music online is also bad because the quality of music is at a all time low because artsit dont need to hit a studio anymore. Since everyone listens to music on myspace or MP3s , our EAR will get use too bad music sounding good.

Based on past history, once JayZ takes over you get more unwanted JayZ albums and no support for new artists.

The music business modelhas to change given all of the access we have to “free” content online. Record companies are losing money and less willing to take risks on new artists because its mad difficult for new artists to sell. Especially when creative individuals find ways of copping the music for free.
