the lupe sales #’s were rumors
billboard reports that he did 143,000 in his first week:
billboard *dot* com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003689227
that puts him at #15
being that fnf’s dj, dj busy predicted 160,000 on his blog and there were rumors swirling last night that his sales were in the 200s, all i can say is this is a disappointment
fuck
oh well, still more than beans and free combined (times two), which means it’s a blessing lupe never signed to the roc, even tho he had the chance

Lupe’s #s look good (none), IMO, especially when you look at today’s market…shit, didn’t F&L only do like 80K, around the same time last year? He’s only a couple of singles away from going gold, and the Cool has a rack of decent potential singles on it…as far as leaks, you can’t prevent that ish, these days; I’m surprised Lupe held the bootleggers off as long as he did…If Lupe’s fanbase was so fuggin’ smart, though, they’d realize that downloading is gonna be the death of the music they claim to love so much- real talk (c) chester the molestor

I encourage everybody to purchase the retail version of MM3 or MM3.5. The mp3’s are DRM free and the majority of the money goes directly into Joey’s pocket. I wish more artists would use that model, then I wouldn’t feel guilty about putting money into the pockets of the RIAA supporting major labels who are probably drawing up a lawsuit against me or one of you as we speak.
December 27th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

I feel the same way, I support the artists I like. I still need to go and buy a copy of Jay -Z. ANY CD, I never bought a jay-z and I call him my favorite artist. I’ll probably cop the black album, never open it.

***Nah, what I’m saying is that, without a decent ROI, there’s not going to be any incentive for labels to push artists anymore, which I guess could be a good thing, because it would weed out the goldrush type muhfukkas, who have no legitimate love for the music and are in it strictly for the glitz and glamour…but that hasn’t been the case, so far, I mean, Birdman outsold Wu Tang, lol…To be honest, I’m torn (none) on this one, I d/l, but I also buy a shitload of music on the regular- I’ve never been one of those cats to d/l and buy, though…wtf is that about? that’s like hopping the turnstyle and then buying a farecard…

I owe Jay-z at least one purchase due to the fact that I bump his music so often.

>>*Nah, what I’m saying is that, without a decent ROI, there’s not going to be any incentive for labels to push artists anymore
good, the labels need a wakeup call. the more albums we buy from them, the more nonsense we’ll have to put up with

because the YT’s are giving up on hip hop and going either back to the rock ish or to R&B artists that act all tough like they gangsters, and are listening to all the r&b influenced hip hop pop songs. plus so many “rap” or “hip hop” artists are gettin akon, t-pain, usher, omarion, etc etc of r&b artists to be on they songs. I mean you notcie most of these “r&b” guys are cursing left and right and slanging all that hood lingo…how is the word “fuck” and “shit” sexy in a love song?…
December 27th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
that’s like hopping the turnstyle and then buying a farecard…
________-
Not quite. It’s more like hopping the turnstyle because you don’t have the money or don’t have time to buy a ticket, then cominglater when you’ve got it and buying a ticket.
that’s ‘more accurate at least.
I download singles, I download when I can’t wait to hear an album. If I’m impressed, then I buy it. If i’m not, then often I erase it…not to be fair about it, just because I don’t want to take up the space.

***In theory, I agree with you…I just can’t see paying for something I already have…I have a “dine n’ dash” mentality, unfortunately, and I don’t love cover art that much, lol…however, with an artist that I really dig, like Outkast or Wu, I typically try to hold out until the release date to cop, because i know that once I d/l, it’s over…I mean, I’m sure you get free copies of albums with your industry connects and all- have you ever bought a joint you’ve already been given? The internet is like industry connects for everybody….real talk…I still want to support artists putting out good product, though, but the internet tests my ethics on the daily….

December 27th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
it’s always a value judgment
i get so much free music these days that i’m not going to buy everything
for lu it’s a no-brainer
for jay it’s tough
i’ve bought every album up to black album the day it came out, including reasonable doubt - which i bought the day it came out then again when the shit got all scratched up
KC and AG - i didn’t cop - i was happy with bootlegs
some cats who work at my firm gave me these jawns and i didn’t feel compelled to cop
i mean, it’s a value judgment
i’m not hating on jay but as a fan you vote with your dollars
and the nice thing is you can vote as many times as you wish
for me it’s a basic principle that if there were more artists like lu out there, i would be mroe excited about hip-hop, so i gave him a lot of votes
who knows
ultimately i can’t see the system being destroyed and rebuilding too easily
because before then, everyone who raps like little brother is going to say fuck it and quit
so it’s going to get way worse before it gets better
December 27th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
The only cd’s I take a chance on are those mix cd’s at best buy. Mainly cause I wouldn’t know what to purchase if they didn’t make them. Like I bought a joint titled “Meditation: Classical Piano”
I would have never in my life put together such a mix, let alone bought all the cd’s/artists/composers featured on the joint. Knowimean?
Only Rap CD I took a chance on was Pharoahe Monch, and I was impressed.

To be honest, I dont care about these Rap cat cryin about downloadin they music. Fock em. I’d rather give my boy 10 dollars than these whiny rap ninjas. Why would I feel bad about someone with at least a six figure income not getting 7 figures? thats Dumb. People should feel bad when they pass up the bootleg man on the block with them movies and cds and dont give hhim money. he is the one eho needs it most. Lupe sold 160′000 copies. I don’t buy cd’s anymore. I know it’s effed up but there are so many ways to get it, not just from d/l, but my circle of friends(none) have the shit I don’t have and vice versa. The ONLY music I buy is vinyl singles and then I buy doubles. Mostly classic shit that I don’t have or can’t find in my grandparents’ basement. Most of the shit I have on vinyl I also have on cd as far as classic shit. and once I get up on that Serrato, I guess I’ll stop buying vinyl, too. But there’s nothing like going digging, smelling the records, finding rare shit for like $.99 or paying over $50.00 for an O.O.P. copy of some shit like “Brand New Funk” or “Greatest Man Alive”.

“Mighty Love”- the Spinners
“Superstition”- Stevie Wonder(and NOT the opening drums, sample the bridge, LOL)
