We used to shoot cans with his 22.
We also took it to the range. The 22 was my gun, he used whichever rifle, pistol, or shot-gun he wanted….even a muzzle reloader.

Guns and kids is a tough subject to discuss. I’ll try my best to give it from two different perspectives (c) majority of my ’06 NR comments…
On one hand, I could see the disdain for exposing a child to gunplay at a young age. Being that our culture (my Nubians) are exposed to violence throughout the urban communities in this nation, we feel that showing a child how to use a gun is extreme. Our neighborhoods are riddled with shell casings and bodies damn near every day. Philly, a prime example, has exceeded the homicide rate in numbers than there are days in the year. I agree that their should be some type of age limit whereas the parents are held responsible for showing a child a gun. Many young, Black boys are growing up in fatherless homes and feel that guns are a necessity as a rites of passage to manhood. They are easily swayed by entertainment and heresay from friends about the reasons to carry a gun without the moral responsibilities. For this reason, many tend to think that a blicky is the first solution to handle confrontation. Add that with being raised by a single mom, and the emotional and quick-tempered attitude traits that he gets from her, and you have a recipe for destruction. We have too many Black boys/men who deem themselves to be “tough” simply because they can squeeze a trigger. Personally, I’d rather teach a youngan how to “shoot the five” rather than shoot the fifth. For that reason, I vouch for inner-city sponsers that are willing to implement boxing and self-defense programs. Of course that’s not the norm these days, but I hope it comes to that again in the near future.
Now, on the other hand, exposing a young boy to a gun from a RESPONSIBLE parent can be legit if the necessary precautions are taken. Once again, I don’t condone violence (mostly gun violence, more than anything) but there are certain situations where one may need to handle himself in fashion. I hope it isn’t on a elementary school level, but I think somewhere in the double-digit ages is ok for a RESPONSIBLE parent to show a child weapons. For one, the fascination with weapons could be minimized by showing him the dangers of what could happen if used improperly. Too many young boys watch movies and get the wrong impression of how and why a weapon is to be used. My father don’t own a gun and never carried one, but made me aware of the dangers wayyyy before I was in double digits. Another aspect of guns that someone mentioned earlier is exposing children to the real world early. Though a shooting range is mostly for sport, I think more parents should make children aware of the moral responsibility of hurting or killing someone whether by accident or intentional. An emotion that many of these young ones lack is remorse. A person without remorse is probably one of the most dangerous human beings on the planet. Allow them to read/watch the news and hear of the horrid stories of parents who will no longer see their children again due to violence in the street. Allow them to talk to relatives who may have lost someone due to gun violence. I’m not sayin’ these are sureshot remedies, but it’s a start. With that notion, he will learn early in life that a gun, no matter how it’s brandished, will always be a dangerous weapon.
