With a few rare exceptions, referees are not my favorite people. That’s why I take enormous pleasure in presenting the following anecdotes:
The Albany Patroons were playing the Puerto Rico Coquis in San Juan. It was the last game of the regular season, and the home team needed a win to qualify for the playoffs. But the game wasn’t going well for the Coquis and their coach was upset from the get-go. His name was Herb Brown, the brother of Larry, and currently an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks.
Late in the contest, referee Ken Mauer looked at a critical charge/block situation and decided that one of the Patroons was the foulee and one of the Coquis was the fouler.
Brown could contain himself no longer. He dashed out onto the court, snatched at Mauer’s whistle, then grabbed hold of the lanyard that circled the ref’s neck — and, without saying a word, quickly began to twist the thing. As Mauer’s face began to turn a bright red, none of the onlookers made a move to rescue him.
In fact, all of the players from both teams couldn’t help laughing, and the Patroons’ coaches (Phil Jackson and me) had the same reaction. Even the fans seemed to be enjoying the spectacle. The other ref’s only reaction was to call a technical foul on Brown.
Meanwhile Mauer’s face had turned from red to blue, and it was apparent that Brown wouldn’t stop twisting the lanyard until the ref was a goner.
At that point, Brown was bear-hugged by a security guard and Mauer lived to breathe through another whistle.
For his misdeed, the CBA suspended Brown for the opening six games of the following season.
And that’s why I’ve always felt nothing but admiration for Brown — for fulfilling every coach’s wish.
Two seasons later, I was coaching the Savannah Spirits during a Sunday afternoon game against the Flyers in Oshkosh, Wis. During a timeout, one of the refs was called over to the scorer’s table where he began an earnest conversation with the Flyers’ radio guy. Barely containing his subsequent laughter, the refs approached me with the good news.
It seemed that an NBA player had just taken a punch at an NBA ref. The good news became even better when the ref said this: “I sure hope that it was Dick Bavetta.”
