As far as Lupe being arrogant, I pretty much picked up on that when he said his next album won’t have any outside production on it – like his generic-ass (nh) producers did that great of a job. His ego is gettin’ a little crazy. The Camel must’ve gassed him or something…

Kids getting into Hip Hop now really should know about the classics that came before. It would be of use to them. A point of reference has got to help when deciding if your own shit is good or garbage.

If you’re just starting as an emcee and you don’t know about the ‘illmatic”s and ’36 Chambers’ of this world, you’ve lost something before you even started. You’re missing something, you know?

Midnight Marauders paved the way for the Kanye’s and the Common’s of this world. Not knowing the history of Hip Hop is like listening to Elvis and not checking out Chuck Berry (but without the cultural-theft element).

The Native Tongues were THE definitive hip-hop movement that gave birth to the ‘alternative’ Black rapper. The non-threatening, educated, middle class Black emcee that wasn’t poppin 30 niggas a verse, but wasn’t pussified either.

Tribe (along with De La and to a lesser extent, the JB’s) helped pave the road for The Roots, Slum, LB, Kanye, Lupe, and any other ‘left-of-center/hipster/alternative’ shit you can name. This is a generally accepted fact that would be hard to disprove.

For Lupe to openly proclaim (repeatedly, even) that he has no interest in hearing the landmark album from a group that clearly paved the way for him, is arrogant and disrespectful.

You’d never hear Dave Grohl pop shit about Jimmy Page.

You’d never hear Plies, Jeezy, or 50 come out they face sideways about Pac. Even if deep down they weren’t fans of his music, them niggas ain’t stupid either.

Nobody can blame you from where you started out, but where you end up is a different story.

You came up listening to gangsta shit because that’s what they were pumpin in your area, then cool. But the bottom line is, GQ and Fader Magazine ain’t praising Lupe for spittin ‘gangsta shit.’ Niggas in the hood clubs ain’t goin crazy when ‘Daydreaming’ (or for that matter, ‘Lovin It’) comes on. I seriously doubt that Spice-1 and MJG will call on Lupe to commemorate them at their Hip Hop Honors.

The point is, Lupe’s appeal and public persona (non-drinker/smoker, strong religious beliefs, critical of hip-hop’s negativity) are directly connected to the lane that cats like Tribe helped create for him.

Whether or not he wants to BE in that lane, well that’s an issue he’ll have to deal with accordingly….but every artist must eventually face reality and realize what side of the bread their butter is on.

I like that…I’m not on either side of this but Phonte made sense with this… lupe should have just chilled and let it ride over, and then if they asked him he could say “oh I messed up my bad, but I’m not a big lsiterner of tribe and MM but I guess I should catch up with it” or something like that.
