Ether had the bigger impact, but it was some dumbed-down shit. Takeover was the more sophisticated, truth-based diss. The fact is, when you’re recording a diss record, you’ve got to go the “extra extra gully Fuck Compton wild-out bullshit” route, over the “I’ma jump on this Doors-sampling Kanye track and spit the truth about 3 different emcees, using a flow I ain’t done before” route. Jay was dropping sly little references to Carmen instead of bombs. Why hold back? Super Ugly was better, but it was too late by then. By being to sophisticated with his approach (not blatant enough), he left the door open for Nasir.
Still, Nas won the battle Jay won the war. And Takeover is by far the better song imo.
