Jay admitted to being heavily influenced by Kane. Jay actually appears on the posse cut “Show & Prove” with Big Skoob, Sauce Money, ODB and Shyheim from Kane’s terrible Daddy’s Home album. I can’t see they would ever have battled.

I mean LL is only a year older than Jay and his first album dropped in 84. LL’s time just ran out like 8 years ago. He just expired. However, there are those of us who appreciate hip hop virtuosity and hear Wayne as not an ignorant rapper who doesnâ€™t use big enough words, but as a rapper who is focused on doing interesting and innovative things rhythmically, sometimes at the expense of content. Iâ€™ve always cringed at the but what is he saying debates in hip hop because it also calls into question centuries of non-lyrical or lightly lyrical vocal music – scatting, chanting, humming, whistling, throat singing, beatboxing, etc. This voice-as-instrument legacy is especially prevalent in black music.

Itâ€™s funny that you continuously bring up Cat In The Hat and Dr. Seuss. While those books were written with a young audience in mind, they were meticulously crafted and often beautifully absurdist. Seuss was a serious artist with a very specific grasp on language. Like Wayne, itâ€™s often more about the interaction of the word sounds than the meaning of the words. To suggest that either of their works are simplistic or shoddily constructed is to have a very simplistic definition of complexity.

That being said, Wayneâ€™s catalog isnâ€™t devoid of a message. His â€œHollywood Divorceâ€ verse was a pretty interesting take on the commodification of hip hop culture and â€œGeorgia Bushâ€ is basically everything people who complain about rap being apolitical have been asking for. (Seussâ€™ work was also littered with very political overtones, but thatâ€™s a discussion for another day).

Billy sez: â€œDonâ€™t we all know that sporadic means â€˜occurring singly, or occasionally, or in scattered instancesâ€™? Does that word fit with someone who is supposed to be a prolific emcee? Is sporadic how you would want to describe yourself if you had a strong work ethic?â€

In this context I donâ€™t think sporadic is intended to describe his recording consistencey or work ethic, but his style of flow, which functions in irregular and seemingly unexpected rhythmic patterns. And itâ€™s a pretty apt description of Wayneâ€™s cadence. Listen to the first track here and tell me that doesnâ€™t strike you as â€œsporadic spit.â€

I know Iâ€™m well beyond the point over intellectualization in this debate. But it is what is.
