I’m just not as cynical as the rest of the rap world–not saying this site, ya’ll are some openminded cats for the most part–yet.
Thing is man.. So much of my life and identity has/had to do with the rap I grew up listening to.. and even the shit I like now.. Seeing it diluted the way it is now is painful..
If I had a nickel for each time a rap song has brought me out of a bad mood or depression or whatever, I’d be a rich motherfucker.. I appreciate that shit, ya know? Be it the lyrics, the beats, whatever.. The legitimate swagger acquired by hustling and putting out quality music, thoughtful music (not emo thoughtful but taking the time to do it right thoughtful).. that shit can be inspiring.
The right lyrics can flip the whole day around, ya know?
Rap just doesn’t do that shit anymore, not really anyway.. so when someone like ‘Ye comes out with a joint like “Stronger†or “Can’t tell me nothingâ€, that’s shit you can bank on, shit you can put on like motherfucking armor and get thru your day..

…..not all of them can…they are already locked into contracts….the labels dont want to let them out of the contracts….but they signed awhile ago and are still stuck…..there is a shit load of really really good music out there but no one is buying it and plenty of young dudes who cant drop….saigon/pap/joell/term all those dudes are better than anything the south has to offer….all those dudes are signed and cant get a release date because they arent pumping ringtones….record companies dont want good hip-hop they want good jingles and ringtones and that is a fucking problem….saigon really could have an album better than illmatic but no one would buy another illmatic right now either… so how are any of us ever gonna know ?

I agree, it’s not just one artist or region that has placed rap music in this poor position in 2007! Everybody has contributed to it at one point or another, but the reality is YOU are the person that has to listen to whatever you listen 2..period! I agree but I think you have to separate them into categories, rap vs. hip hop. Because I can say I honestly listened to them both growing up. You have your hip hop classics, but then again I listed to a lot of Brotha Lynch Hung, Cbo etc and who says those aren’t classics either? Rap classic maybe. As long as we know and acknowledge the difference, it’s really okay. Only question is, where do we draw the line between rap and hip hop?
