What He Said

In case you ladies haven’t seen it yet, we put up an interview with 9th Wonder today over at the 9-5. He talks about his new album and is predictably evasive when it comes to questions about the LB split. But in the middle of one of those answers he said this:

The people are not fans anymore. They want to be an A&R. They want to read SoundScan. That may be a sign of the times but [they] don’t want to sit back, lay on their bed, open up the CD, listen to it, bump it in their car and let that be it. Nobody is a pure fan. It seems to me that my age group is more hip-hop fans because we buy it, come home and that’s it. You call up your man and sit on the back of the porch and listen to the joint together. Now it’s like, “Such and such did 45,000.” Why are you concerned with all of that?"

It’s been said before, and It’ll be said again, but damn if that doesn’t describe perfectly what’s wrong with rap fans nowadays. I know what you’re thinking: "But yo Es, didn’t you just post about Clifford’s first week sales, and aren’t you doing 2 posts per day about Kanye vs. Curtis?"

Guilty as charged. The difference is that, at the end of the day, I really don’t care who sells more records. All of this shit makes for good blog fodder and shit talk, but it doesn’t affect me or you. Like it or not, T.I.’s first week sales are important to rap music as a whole. Not because they mean the album is good (’cause it really isn’t), but because if somebody didn’t sell something this year, you can bet there’d be even less decent shit to look forward to next year.

But I really feel what 9th is saying about everybody wanting to be an A&R. Now, that I kinda sorta work in the industry, I have to pay attention to Soundscan, and charts and ringtone sales. But what’s your excuse? You don’t work for a fucking record label. Just because your man dropped a "street album" and you put up some posters, doesn’t make you his manager. Get over yourself and get back to enjoying the music for crying out loud.

All the other new producers are just as trash and lame as all these new rappers claiming to be the best.

2 or 3 beats from 9th wouldn’t hurt their album at all.

  35. 1980 Says:

9th is right to an extent. Fans are far too critical now. Records are dissected before they even officially released. I really don’t give a shit about numbers. People that follows the numbers that closely are letting other people dictate what they should listen to. As a blogger myself, i’m guilty of being too critical too, but at the end of the day its all love.

we check album sales mainly because we wonna see artist do well… even if we won’t openly admit it… tohugh most the times we dont even contribute to the succes of these artist… yes i download before i buy (i hope everyone else does) but we gotta at the very least support, how do we support when we dont wonna bother listning, soundscan, whether the album was hot or not, any publicity is good publicity. i have a handful of artist that i would definitly buy before even listening to the whole album, just because i want thier succes to carry on, even if it’s not up to expectation. point is i give the support to the artist i favour, as do many others in that scenario… i dont even remember what this was all gonna sum up, so i’ll just say… point is we support however we can

summed up in one sentence: FUCK HIP HOP (right now).

  63. White Mike Says:

Considering that I work in the industry, consider myself a true fan and have plenty of friends who are completely on the “outside” of the industry i feel like i see both sides of this pretty well…
Sales matter to people b/c its a gauge of who’s relevant in a certain genre — who’s relevant enough that the genre gets the album and who’s relevant enough to earn the mass appeal. I think this is industry wide, not just in hip hop.
Everyone wants to be an A&R b/c this generation (15-24) is one that has had HORRIBLE albums forced down our throats since about the time we all owned our 1st CD – name 20 commercially accepted albums in the last 10 years that you could let play 1st to last and not skip a track (good luck). So yea, of course we’re going to be critics; of course we’re gonna start shitting on 90% of these guys b/c even the so-called leaders of the industry can’t even put 15 tracks on an album – let alone all Good tracks. So that’s the fine line… hip hop is music, an expression, an art form, etc – but its also getting PAID and that’s only trackable through sales, etc.
When an artist is good, when their product is good top to bottom, sales and all that don’t matter. I think that’s what 9th was missing with that… i’ve never heard any1 criticize AZ on sales…

  79. M.Z. Says:

You don’t have to be in the industry to care about album sales. It’s just like box office numbers. People like to see how sales go, otherwise gold and platinum would be irrevalent. My friends and I have read soundscans and discussed sales for the past 12 years. I doesn’t affect our discussion of quality of music either. But we’re probably the exception and not the rule.

  80. Dj Smuve Says:

It definitely is a sign of the times. The world we live in now is a reality tv world where any and every one has a slight chance of being broke and famous…famous being the key word. So with that said everyone will always be a fan, but since I know what goes into making an album since I have fruity loops and protools and a keyboard and my man is alving racking is brain for creative rhymes…I want to know what “professionals” of the same genre are doing. I think its a hiphop thing as well. You don’t really hear Rock, Jazz, or country artist fans trying to see who did what. None the less…The first time I heard Common’s new joint “Start The Show”…I ran out of the building at my job, called my man up, had him come get me in his whip and we blazed and listened to that joint I promise you about 20 times. So….What am I getting at? Good music is good music and you will respond like a fan to good music. All that ringtone and soundscan shit is that bubble gum cut and paste rap music we hear on the radio. Anyway…

    Sound Man Smuve
