^Original material on mixtapes, imo, seems to be a viable route. For one, you can do songs that would probably never get cleared by the label (Prodigy’s ROTM). And now you can even do videos for ‘em with a small budget and up it to Youtube. Floodin’ the streets isn’t the same anymore because of the digital area. By the time you have recorded it in the studio, that shit has already leaked all over the internet. Back when 50 was doin’ it (’01, ’02) the net wasn’t as accessible as it is now. But battling is definitely taking it back to the essence and displays the raw talent of an MC. You just need enough business savvy to know how to cross that over into a mainstream deal. For instance, Serius Jones became Fight Klub champion, released a mixtape full of original songs (one of which even 50 that was hot) which showed his versatility and thus continued his buzz straight from FK to the streets (net), and then had labels like DTP hittin’ him up. So yeah, if you’re a good battle MC then that would be a good route.

Kinda late but I had to say this
Mook murked Serious, I don’t care what no one says. Loaded Lux is the best at it right now and he served mook something serious but Mook did have the upperhand in that Serious Jones battle. It doesn’t matter how many cheerleaders he had, I would say that there were at least 50% of the people in the room that were neutral and they pretty much cosigned Mooks punchlines.
Mook just had better punchlines than Serious, plus he came with some comedic shit. Serious only took like one round and for the most part ain’t really have no killer punchlines.
