No offence, but that is some of the dumbest shit I’ve ever read. If you look over at Nah Right Lite, eskay’s done us a favour by posting a link to an excerpt of Dyson’s new book. One of his central propositions is that hip hop deserves to be studied because of the way it has forced a majority of the world to take a minute a listen to what the fuck blacks live like in the ghetto’s of America. If you’re coming from “my†world, there is very little that is written about (in the mainstream press) those conditions and the effect it’s having on generations of blacks. That’s why I fell in love with hip hop and that’s why I continue to listen to most if it today. Take an artist who most of you seem to hate (50) and look at the extended interview that eskay also posted from Spin magazine (I think). When he’s asked about the gunshots in his music, and he says something to the effect of “that’s what I hear everytime I think about that environment,†in my view, that is precisely what hip hop music has been able to better than any other genre of music that I’ve listened to. It offers a window into an environment that for all kinds of reasons, I don’t have access to. Furthermore, for those of us who actually want to help in a significant way, I don’t think we would have been aware at such a young age of these problems if hip hop hadn’t been there to make the introducion in an entertaining, yet engaging way. Now, I’m not arguing that hip hop music is where I get most of my information, but it did serve as wonderful introduction to a lot of society’s ills. As for why I think your comments were a little off base, how the fuck are people outside of that community to help if they can’t join the discussion about what the problems are and what possible solutions are at a grassroot level?
^^I’m going to have to ask your age, because clearly you are talking about music from two different time periods… also it needs to be mentioned, that hiphop is not a type of music, hiphop is a way of life. It is a culture, it’s not something you do, it’s something you live (c) KRS. Hiphop has elements: emceeing, dj’ing, b-boys & graffiti. Thus rap is only one of those elements, so for anyone to refer to hiphop as music is offbase from the jump. While both the culture and the musical element is worthy of studying, a huge part of that study that is left out or not spoken on, is how the element of emceeing and the image of the rapper has been perverted to disseminate and influence the masses into subservience. When you are only focused on sex, money, guns, alcohol, and drugs, that is all you strive to attain, not knowledge on any level other than how to acquire the afforementioned 5 things. If people want to help, they can come down from their ivory towers and move into the hood and stop looking to music to get their insight. Cuz that is no better than all the white kids who bump 50’s music in the burbs so they can feel “down” or like they “can relate to the streets”. Get that shit first hand instead of guessing. Go into the communities (or lack thereof) and start some programs or some shit. See what it’s like to have to worry about getting stuck up at night (or during the day) on your way home. It’s easy to sit there and say that people should be reading The Prince instead of glorifying Tupac but unless you’re going to go and teach them yourself, don’t criticize the next man for looking for something other than the bullshit that the industry feeds us… honestly, what are you doing to make a difference?

^^ Last time I checked I read fine. I was just saying for those who do not read a mag just because of the cover. I do too read most of the shit in stores. I just got mags from 97..Source so I buy them as well.
^^^^I cant front on the quality of the articles in XXL, I like the whole “witty haters” thing. They got alot of good information in their too. And Scratch was probably (maybe is) still my favorite mag, but I cant deal with all these wack covers…it just takes away from the collectors quality of it, to me that is.
But like I said somewhere before, i never ran a magazine before, so they’ll do what they do, I just wont collect anymore. It aint too complex.

^^I’m going to have to ask your age, because clearly you are talking about music from two different time periods… also it needs to be mentioned, that hiphop is not a type of music, hiphop is a way of life. It is a culture, it’s not something you do, it’s something you live (c) KRS. Hiphop has elements: emceeing, dj’ing, b-boys & graffiti. Thus rap is only one of those elements, so for anyone to refer to hiphop as music is offbase from the jump. While both the culture and the musical element is worthy of studying, a huge part of that study that is left out or not spoken on, is how the element of emceeing and the image of the rapper has been perverted to disseminate and influence the masses into subservience. When you are only focused on sex, money, guns, alcohol, and drugs, that is all you strive to attain, not knowledge on any level other than how to acquire the afforementioned 5 things. If people want to help, they can come down from their ivory towers and move into the hood and stop looking to music to get their insight. Cuz that is no better than all the white kids who bump 50’s music in the burbs so they can feel “down†or like they “can relate to the streetsâ€. Get that shit first hand instead of guessing. Go into the communities (or lack thereof) and start some programs or some shit. See what it’s like to have to worry about getting stuck up at night (or during the day) on your way home. It’s easy to sit there and say that people should be reading The Prince instead of glorifying Tupac but unless you’re going to go and teach them yourself, don’t criticize the next man for looking for something other than the bullshit that the industry feeds us… honestly, what are you doing to make a difference?

Either I can’t write, or you can’t read… Firstly, you’re welcome to quote KRS all you want, but take a look at most of the popular press, or even Dyson’s work and you’ll see him using the word hip hop in both contexts (to describe both the culture and the music). Anyway, my point was very simple. Even the “commercial” rap that you love to hate has been instrumental in introducing many of the problems that blacks face in the US to a worldwide audience. I would challenge you to find another medium in HISTORY that has been as effective at communication a poor person’s view of life to such a large community of people. I also made sure to point out that it was a great INTRODUCTION. In no way did I say it should be used as a primary tool for research. As for what I’m doing to help…My family has just setup a foundation. We have an operating budget of about $800,000 CDN for our first year. Our primary focus is going to be on Jamaica (health & education) for the time being because my mom is moving back there. As my wealth grows (I’m only 23) our foundation is going to have a more global outlook and tackle bigger, more complex problems… Oh yeah, and I don’t know where you got the idea that I said people shouldn’t listen to Tupac. I simply was saying that are much better places to look that are free and very accessible (more so than practically anywhere else in the world) if your primary focus is on a better understanding of the world. Tupac can offer an interesting commentary on what he’s seen, but by no means is he one of the most profound thinkers that we have available to us.
