A couple quick points before I leave. I said rap (even “commercial”) served as a great introduction to the ills in certain segments of the population. (I’m not arguing that some artists aren’t better at it than others). As I understand it, being introduced to something doesn’t imply you know shit about shit, but it is a first step for many people who aren’t directly affected by those same circumstances. That doesn’t mean you have a deep understanding of the state of health care, or how to address the problems in k-12 education, or how to get people to invest in urban communities. But what it did do for me, and lots of other people like me, is make me aware of these issues at an early age. Secondly, my point about other authors was this: if you’re interested in learning about the world, turn to Einstein and Newton to learn about physics, turn to Schumpeter for a better understanding of the role of entrepreneurs in society, turn to Plato and Aristotle to help you understand the fundamental questions we have to ask ourselves as humans and as members of a society. All their books are available at your local library, free of charge. To quote that recent youtube video “Read a book nigga.” In short, IMHO rap music has been great at introducing the rest of the world (i.e., those not living in American ghettos which accounts approx 6.4 billion ppl) to some of the problems affecting the black community. In my view it has done this better than any other medium I have seen. That’s what I was talking about when I said that. But here’s the important point, there’s a lot more to life that is critical to our development as a race that we need to understand in order to be productive members of society and we aren’t going to get that from any 25 year old artist (I don’t care how gifted he is).
