I’d focus on those artists too, they sell more than rap artists because they appeal to so many different demographics and there are more media outlets to promote pop music. Plus Ne-Yo’s last 2 albums have been better than any of the albums released on Def Jam in the past 2 years.

Talking of Jay Z whos album you guys think was the most dissapointing last year?
Busta Rhymes
or
Jay Z
or
Nas
June 21st, 2007 at 9:05 am
@ J88– I couldn’t follow his flow. At first, to me, it sounded like he was off-beat.
Wu Tang & Bad Boy ruled Brentwood when Hov first blew up, so all I really knew of him was that he was the “Ain’t No Ni**a” guy. (hot blonde girl walking byyyy…and I’m back).. Then I heard some other little singles “Who you with”, “Girls best friend” and I was like Wow, this guy can’t rap to the beat, and I don’t like the beats anyway– So i went back to Wu Tang Forever or No Way Out or whatever.
I dug his guest spots on Mariah’s stuff, I liked Can I Get A.. Some of the stuff on Hard Knock Life.. but for the most part I didn’t think he was a big deal. Then when The Blueprint came out I couldn’t deny “H to the Izzo” was awesome, and then Girls Girls Girls…
But!
He started to diss Nas, and I was one of those disenchanted Nas fans that still liked Nasty Nas (pause), but wasn’t happy with his post I.W.W. output.. Still, Jay kicking Nas when he was down pissed me off, and then when Ether came out I was like “Ha! F Hov!”.. I still dug some of his collabos with Cam and Freeway and junk, but I still thought he was a dick for the Nas thing.
Then I started writing songs and I was trying to broaden my horizons a bit so I picked up Blueprint 2, and Hovi Baby was the second song, and I was like “Oh…shit…”–It was awesome.
Since then I picked up Blueprint, Black Album, Reasonable Doubt, Volume 1, Best of Both Worlds (I know), and Kingdom Come, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

@ Busta– I didn’t pick up, um, Busta’s album.. so ‘tween nas & jay I’d have to say I was more disappointed in Jay’s. I liked it ok, but I felt his choruses were weak, and that he was holding back and/or rusty.
I really liked HHID from Nas tho’.. I thought it was brilliant.

^Okay, I got ya. Best of…….was a good album, but some people on here might disagree because there “too hip hop” to have fun. That’s one of those albums I play before i’ma bout to see a chick, or go to the club. Like I always say about “fun music” it serves it’s purpose, it’s not suppose to be under the same microscope as a KRS album, it’s meant to bring girls to the dance floor & make them get loose. No one wants to hear Wu tang freestyles while there @ the club, except them grimey duns that’s standing on the wall, hands on there balls (NH) (c) Ma$e. So no shame in owning a Best of album, shit I bought the 2nd one (which WAS trash) I can’t listen to the whole thing all the way thru. Hov needs to stop making CD’s on the tour bus

@ J88– Hmm.. that’s an interesting theory. What order do you think the tracks should be in?
As for “Best of…” I thought the beats were good.. Kells did his thing, but it seemed like Hov was trying to keep generic.. Like maybe he didn’t wanna put A-List material on what was, respectfully, a gimmicky album. I wouldn’t say it was bad tho’, I liked it ok.
I totally agree on Fun music. Everybody shat on “Show Me What You Got”, but I thought it was fun.. Dudes on xxlmag clowned me for thinking that way, but it’s true.. “And Wave! And wave! And wave!” is just plain fun.
T-Pain is useless, so is Yung Joc, but I love “Buy You A Drank”.. that shit is just fun right there.

I think it’s cuz, out of the 3 I did hear, It Ain’t Hard To Tell was my favorite, and the other 2 didn’t sound anything like it.
I’m afraid of getting it now cuz I have a problem with older-style production unless it’s on an album I got when it first came out.. As in 36 Chambers production is dated, but I love it.. 9th Wonder: I think the R. Kelly album is an abomination of Black people. The zoo song- if that’s not the most ridiculous s**t. It really hurts me that Black people are going around playing that mess. Like one, you know the n***a is going around peeing on little girls, and past that, he is talking about monkeys and trees. If you support that you don’t even deserve to be Black no more. He wants to jump on records with all these young cats, damn T-Pain. He is supposed to lead not follow, and I think that only happens with Black music. That doesn’t happen with White music. Bon Jovi and U2 are going to play their jams that everybody knows, and everyone is going to go home and be happy.

^ I was a year late on RD (because the pac stan in me (nh) wouldn’t let me bump nothing other than pac) but when I first heard it I always envision a late 30′s mafia type theme. Like the pictures in the album cover, the music (beat wize)sounded like that, from politics as usual, can’t knock the hustle, bring it on, all those beats sound like they could’ve been the soundtrack to “Bronx tale” or other movies like that.
June 21st, 2007 at 9:34 am
@Rey- albums like Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt will never sound dated. If anything 36 Chambers sounds more dated than those two. I say that cuz I don’t think the Wu were as lyrically advanced as Nas and Jay at that time. They improved lyrically greatly year by year. Nas and Jay sounded so ahead of their time on their first albums.

^The production of RD puts it in the top IMO because at that time it was original, all the topics he hit on that album went perfectly with the beats, D-Evils alone is a classic song, the way he broke down the story in the second verse
“We use to fight for building blocks

but as soon as the $ grew we grew black hearted
thinking back when we first learned to use rubbers
he never learned so in turn i’m kidnapping his babymother
my hand around her collar, feeding her cheese
she said the taste of dollars were shitty, so I fed her 50$
^Come on man, classic material. The reason RD stands out to me is because they were no other albums like it, sure there were rug realers in the rap game, but no one told the story of the downside of the crack game, the concepts on that album IMO is & still unmatched.

36 chambers stands out because nobody had ever heard anything like it, and it went against the grain…Production wise, it was gritty, almost felt unfinished sometimes, in direct opposition to the polished, R&B/funk vibe that the west coast was putting out at the time….Lyrically, nobody had ever heard a crew of that many niggas who were all that good, each with distinctive personas and agendas…Wu Tang forever, bitches….

456, and icon summed up those albums well, both great albums with different perspectives. Nas’s being (living in the now) and Jay (hustlers ambition). But as far as RD being deeper I dont agree, it was somewhat superficial because of the over-hyped gangsta persona, rather than how the average dude looked at his surroundings.

^>having a chipped tooth > looking like a camel
^Can’t argue with that, i’m happy I don’t look like either one of those fools
Looking like a camel, but having camel face bank account > getting my chip tooth fixed, then work for a man that resembles a camel

Seriously. Remeber Guru a couple years back beefing with Young Guru? He was talking about how disrespectful it was…â€What if someone came out with the name Young Krs or Young Rakim.†He was dead. Total lack of imagination and respect for the legends before them.
***LOL..shit, remember, there was a group called “Young Gunz”, like back in 92, that were affiliated with Guru? Chris and Neef jacked that shit (n/h)…oh, other classics, Sun Rises in the East, Livin; Proof, every Gangstarr Album, Sex Packets….
