According to one of our sources in Hungary, Nas, who was scheduled to perform at a Budapest club last night (Saturday, June 9) for some reason didn’t want to appear, keeping the crowd waiting for 2 and a half hours.

I have a feeling “Curtis” is going to another Massacre.. and “Before I Self Destruct” is going to be another Get Rich or Die Trying.
The reason I say this is that I remember a 50 cent interview (when Before I Self Destruct was supposed to be a double CD) …he said something like “on this album i’m going to take it back to times before Get Rich or Die Trying days. It’s going to have versus like…where I talk about my experiences from the hood. Like my verse on Game’s record, Hate It Or Love It.'’…so far Curtis appears to not match this content whatsoever. And the tracklisting+album snippets do NOT match his description… plus “Before I Self Destruct” , is a more suitable title for what his album content will include…

Kanye’s transcended hip-hop.. He’s outspoken, yet the only thing people outside hip-hop circles say about him is just that–he’s outspoken. If they dug a little deeper they’d see that his albums are universally praised, and while his Bold Face Quotes are outlandish, he always backs those big-font quotes with honest, usually intelligent comments.
50, for all his business savvy, doesn’t attract that kind of attention–but that’s part of his gimmick. The majority of the rap record buying public is suburban white males, and it’s not a Mr. Fantastic stretch to say that’s largely to rebel against their parents. Rock music doesn’t do that anymore because you can’t put on friggin’ Metallica to intimidate parents who dropped acid at Woodstock. However, racism is rampant in the country, and regardless of how white america might want to appear to the rest of America in terms of tolerance, nothing scares white parents more than black culture, black friends, black interests or, God forbid, little Tommy dating Lakeyshia.
Therefore, 50’s appeal to the record buying public is one of shock value and reactions. Tommy and Maggie love the idea of Mom and Dad freaking out over them loving and supporting this big black guy who was shot 9 times and shouts out this paramilitary faction called the “G-Unit”.
Once that age bracket grows out of the rebellion stage they’ll move on to something else in hip-hop, or abandon it altogether. That’s why you have white kids who would’ve died to meet the Rza in 1997-2000, yet won’t bump a Wu album in their cars today.
So, to sum up, while your appreciation for 50’s music apparently legitimate, the people who put him on a pedestal no longer hold that same kind of affection (pause) for him or his product.
Conversely, Kanye’s fan base has been the backpackers, the audio-philes, and the rap-loving dorks like me who appreciate his bravado and ability to back it up with both critical and commercial success.
Kanye’s popularity is due to his music and his product, not necessarily his image.
My point is, and I do mean this respectfully, is that substance–over the long run–will win out over style, and that substance will create a more loyal fanbase.

As for Hova being more relevant than Kanye–
I’ll admit, that might be true because of how huuuuge a star Jay-Z is, but to Hip-Hop America, new Kanye Material is cause for excitement, while new Jay material is scrutinized to an absurd degree.
Jay-Z is a legend, is the Michael Jordan of rap, the Hulk Hogan of rap (in a good way), while Kanye is more of an Isiah Thomas type, or a John Cena type.. Good for his time, a hall of famer, but won’t get consideration for the “Greatest Ever” distinction.
So yeah, Kanye is more relevant musically right now because he has a ton of different audiences checking for him, and his singles off Late Registration: Diamonds, Gold Digger, Heard ‘Em Say, Drive Slow, and Touch The Sky.. all set him up for repeat business from all of those audiences:
Gold Digger– 20something Party girls
Diamonds– Hip Hop heads and Die Hard Roc fans
Heard ‘em say– Introspective rap fans–the roots’ audience
Drive Slow– Southern Rap fans (that’s not a shot)
Touch the sky– The Song itself- Audiophiles, kanye stans.. The video– the trl crowd, the jackass crowd, the youngin’s who dug the mutton chops and pam anderson.
So yeah, Kanye’s set himself up lovely, and if “Stronger” is the first single, he’s gonna kill with that. Plus, he doesn’t need to dis rappers or shoot anyone, he can just go out there and do what he’s done twice already, and that’s say this:

Tell you what, I don’t have a huge affinity for 50, but I do like a bunch of his songs.. The guy makes good party music, has an ear for beats–he obviously knows how to get people’s attention.
Other thing is, the fickle nature of rap audiences today sickens me because 4 years ago I couldn’t get into an elevator without hearind 21 Questions or In Da Club, but now those same people taht elevated Curtis turn their back on him—-that’s really sad.
I wasn’t aware of that deal–and to be honest, making money to do something others do for free is THE hustle, but it doesn’t impress me.
Him selling 1.5 or 2 million copies today will be just like him selling 5 million of Massacre, or 6 million of GRODT, and if he does that I will absolutely stop questioning his relevence.
Until then, I can’t help but look at his album getting pushed back and G-Unit’s overall decline in sales as signs that 50’s run as “top dog” is over.
And with the album being pushed back, I know he says it’s a worldwide release thing, and that might be true, but if the world was going nuts over Amusement Park (a song I like, btw), there’s no way they’d push it back 3 months.

The episode wasn’t great, but the last scene was real good, I thought. Nobody really liked the ending cause we all wanted something to happen, but it was done well. It was pretty intense.
