Russell on Obscene Lyrics: Bleep That Shit Out
So last week Russell got pretty much everybody who matters in the hip-hop industry together to talk about the recent assault on lyrical content in the wake of the Imus fuckfest, and what if anything the record labels and execs are gonna do about it. The meeting was supposed to be followed by a press conference announcing whatever new initiatives Russell and the TI’s had dreamed up, but the whole thing ran past schedule.
Today Russell and Ben Chavis released their statement of recommendation to the broadcasting and recording industries which you can read in its entirety here. In effect, Russell is telling radio stations and record labels to bleep out the words, "bitch," "ho" and "nigger." Now, correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t radio stations already supposed to be doing that, and don’t record labels release edited versions of explicit LP’s? You gotta love it.

^I was kinda iffy about that move too. I was like, damn, he was destroyin’ cats on the SMACK joints, so why go to BET? BUT… I also realized that commercial exposure is what gets you noticed. Serius Jones got his exposre from Fight Klub, which was featured on MTV. Most people who are into the SMACK joints know that it’s strictly some underground ish. And being on MTV helped Serius get that deal with DTP. So yeah, I did think of it as a step backwards at first. But the opponents on 106 are a lot weaker (his REAL competition would’ve been about 6 years ago when Posta Boy, Avalanche, Drift, etc. was battlin’). That could work in his favor though because once he smash all the opponents, labels will check for his Myspace/mixtapes/dvd appearances and make their decision from there.
Especially with a track like “No Model†that could EASILY get airplay.
On that note… I’m off to class…

What if I were to start an Indy label. (Not just hip hop) that released albums straight via my own site. The only cost would be production, studio, marketing….. There prolly wouldn’t be any distribution cost cuz the internet is my distribution(unless you count the cost to run the website). Think about it, most albums get leaked when they are sent to be pressed up into cd format. By eliminated the cd I can keep my masters and release the track in mp3 format on a specified release date. Maybe charge only 6.99 per album………..I figure (and by figure I mean pulling numbers out my ass……..no Anderson Cooper) when I subract all my cost I would still make like 2.50 per download. Sheit this might be an attractive offer for artist who already have a fan base, that heavily downloads there music, but doesn’t buy the albums ____(insert your favorite rapper)
