Author Roni Sarig is releasing a new book that explores hip-hop’s origins in the South — Third Coast: OutKast, Timbaland, and How Hip-Hop Became a Southern Thing. But don’t fret hip-hop fans. Sarig isn’t saying the Bronx isn’t the birthplace of modern day hip-hop. In his book, he explores the history of rap, stating it goes back to the oral tradition of slaves in the South, field hollers and the blues and gospel. Sarig says this connects the dots to early 20th century African American radio announcers who “rhymed, testified and signified.†Hosts like Jacko Henderson, Daddy-O and Poppa Stoppa actually spoke in rhyme. Their radio shows, in turn, would “influence Jamaica’s earliest toasters such as U-Roy and Sir Lord Comic to perform their rhythmic rhymes over reggae dubs.†It was these “toasters†who would then influence DJ Kool Herc, the father of hip-hop. ^LOL. I drive a ’94 Camry. Used to have a ’89 Escort. Had a list of problems. Like to hear it? Here it go:
*Leaky windshield on driver’s side
*No A/C
*Passenger side could only be opened from inside AND it didn’t lock
*Rusted paint below the door handles
*The clasp on the driver’s side door would often close before it latched on to the car, thus the door wouldn’t close. Had to pry the clasp open with a screw driver from time to time
*No radio
*The lil’ roof cover was missin’ a string, so I had to lift it up when I opened the trunk (it was a hatchback)
*Front bumper was cracked with a hole in it
*Rearview mirror would fall off the windshield during extreme heat
*Dent by my gas tank (car accident)
*The automatic seat belt wouldn’t move sometimes
*Drivers and passenger door armrests were gone
*Rubber seal lining on the passenger door would sag

My father’s a drug and alcohol counselor.. he helped alot of dudes in Rikers beat that petty 3-5 shit by getting them into programs.. not asshole dudes, but good, decent people that just got caught up with drugs and subsequently knocked for it..
He’s 60 years old but he still takes time to have fun and be a kid.. it’s what balances me out when the world keeps telling me I should be taking shots of Patron every nite and buying $245 yellow-n-green sneakers..
Not only that, but he’ll do whatever to keep the lights on and food on the table, he has no foolish pride when it comes to his family, even tho’ he’s a strong dude..

A lot of Africans pratice Yoruba. I think it may have been a west African religon. My sister practices it now and it is quite interesting. I had my spirit read to see which diety oversees me and it told me a lot about myself that I already knew but it was weird hearing it from someone else who didnt know me at all.

^I’m not sure. But one of my homies, who doesn’t claim a religion (and is also Prince Hall) is heavy in African culture and had a framed document of the Ma’at. And it’s basically the laws and ethics that man should abide by to live a righteous life. I’m surprised that I even remembered the name of it. Gonna look it up some more when I get the chance. It also depends on which country in Africa. Christianity and Islam embody African ethnics, BUT, the Anglo Saxons took it… coded the Bible with Masonic ish… and twisted it severely. Why do you think they have Jesus Christ as being Black and never acknowledge it YET never change it? Just as all the Masonic symbols (pyramid) and everything else was jacked from us, so were the stories.

Eh, just some snotty ass white kids making fun of me for not having Nikes or spiky hair or whatever.. I didn’t even get shit for being fat.. It was mostly for having a wit that went slightly above “super sloppy double dare” (nhjic) and not having every little thing I could want—-I’m sure some of those kids were just making shit up, but when the Starter jacket era came in..pssshhh..I got killed every day for it.
I didn’t give a shit about brand names until I got made fun of for not having any.. I bought walking sneakers the other day, but since Nike doesn’t make wide widths (stay with me here), I copped some new balances (no heart attack > cool sneakers), but that little voice was like “Oh man, I can’t buy sneakers that aren’t Nike! We kept on our grind, did 2 years in a 1 bdrm apartment in a former (not so former, to be honest) crack house, and now we’re in a nice place in a nice area..
I just can’t/won’t forget that thru it all he’s been there to do whatever it took.. People have fucked me over all the time, girls, friends, jobs, but my father has never, ever let me down.. It’s where I get my loyalty from–to friends, family–even shit like music and movies–I don’t/won’t forget what got me to where I am.

damn, NR is on some introspective shit today…
like a lot of ya’ll, i had no pops growing up… i saw him maybe once or twice prior to age 18. but my take is, i was prolly better of without him. i had a great male role model in my grandfather (family oriented, cigar smokin, war-vet-who would-fuck-you-up-if-you-walked-on-his-lawn-type dude) so i don’t even miss him that much.
ive talked about this with a couple of my boys who had fathers around, but they werent very positive.. one had stepdads come and go, the other had a father who was on crack — to make his shit more fucked up, one of our other boys sold it to him… real fucked up dynamic. i’m pretty sure for me, having no pops was a blessing in disguise.

^^N/h but I think my style is very similar to Cuttino’s…………..I used to be the emo king in a wierd way……..but not to bog you guys down the Wifey and I have decided to separate cuz she is still not able to trust me and to maintain a good relationship for our daughter, I moved to My Moms and SHe will stay at the house(her parents gave it to her anyways) We are good friends but she felt she will never trust me and that is no way to raise a child if she is constantly bickering about my infidelity……its going on 3 weeks but so far so good…..My daughter stays at my house friday-monday and then goes to her moms , we live about 1 mile away……….the truly wack part is realizing their is nothing that can fix it, Even if I dont do a damn thing she still has the doubt on her mind……but the good part is being single and not even trying to commit to one bitch or woman….I will stay like that for quite some time unless that woman comes into my life ………I am out with the EMO

^^^My Girl and I grew up together since elementary never dated until I was 20 and she was 19 now I am 25 and she is 24…….we have alot of history live a 5 minute drive apart and our relationship is to the point that we do everything we can for our daughter maybe one day we will get back together ….but its way too much drama when we are together but when we are just friends(no sex) its cool and my daughter is like I said just 5 minutes away…….I dont know this is my first time in a situation like this but we just grew apart……and alot of it has to do with me ….
