Yeah the way it looks now, its a toss up (nh) between whats better for the artist, sign with a major - get the promotion and the brand building that an artist needs (although not all the time see Saigon and Lupe) but then end up having to pay back all your expenses for years after your album is done, or go independent - no extra hidden costs are attributed to your contract, you get more $ per album, more artistic control but then you don’t get decent promotion for your album which means your brand isn’t going to be built up which may mean your longevity in the game could be jeopardised. Its six of one half a dozen of the other. Its not a good time to be a new artist who has lyrical ability. Sales are based on gimmicks these days.
I heard red did mid 40’s.. i know mims did around 75k.. n red did 30k less than that. but you could argue red got little to no promotion.. There is little advantage to signing to a label anymore.. I guess it all depends on your long term goals.. Mims bragged about movin a million ringtones.. but his 75K first week sales was a monumental failure considering the impact of the single.. the entire landscape is different.. There is a niche market that can be impacted and exploited, but you’re right.. it is too gimmicky nowadays.. buck moved 125k i believe.. Yeah the way it looks now, its a toss up (nh) between whats better for the artist, sign with a major - get the promotion and the brand building that an artist needs (although not all the time see Saigon and Lupe) but then end up having to pay back all your expenses for years after your album is done, or go independent - no extra hidden costs are attributed to your contract, you get more $ per album, more artistic control but then you don’t get decent promotion for your album which means your brand isn’t going to be built up which may mean your longevity in the game could be jeopardised. Its six of one half a dozen of the other. Its not a good time to be a new artist who has lyrical ability. Sales are based on gimmicks these days.

I heard red did mid 40’s.. i know mims did around 75k.. n red did 30k less than that. but you could argue red got little to no promotion.. There is little advantage to signing to a label anymore.. I guess it all depends on your long term goals.. Mims bragged about movin a million ringtones.. but his 75K first week sales was a monumental failure considering the impact of the single.. the entire landscape is different.. There is a niche market that can be impacted and exploited, but you’re right.. it is too gimmicky nowadays.. buck moved 125k i believe.. I can’t count siagon in the new breed of emcee because he been around since riggs morales’ days at the source and he been havin dudes co-sign him since then.. shit he even appeared on HBO’s Entourage. but breaking a new artist in this climate will take a feat of great proportions.. We’ll see how 50 does in this climate too.. that should be interesting.
