XXL Canibus Interview
We just threw up this Canibus Q&A over at the 9-to-5 and I thought you ‘bags would get a kick outta this:
The album is 17 tracks and “Poet Laureate Infinity” is the grand finale on the album. There are 1,000 bars in that track and due to the way it’s layered, it’s an infinite rhyme. When you mix it and spread it throughout five channels, [you have the ability] to mix the track differently every time. Because when you hear the mix, whichever one you hear, you are only listening to one layer at a time. But there are four other layers there. You are only going to be hearing 200 bars per record. But at any moment and every moment, there are 800 bars that you’re not listening to. So I’ve created something that’s never been done before. Every time it’s mixed, you’ll hear a different song.
Poet Laureate I and II were off the planet lyrically, but wow, is it really that serious? Hopefully I’ll be getting my hands on this in the next few days, so I guess we’ll find out then.

***Canibus used to be in the army, like 5 yrs ago..he was stationed in Ft Lewis in Washington State…dunno if he ever went to Iraq, but he got discharged from the service for failing a piss test…

In 2002, Canibus signed up for the United States Army. For the next three years, fans were not provided with an official reason for this decision. It was originally thought that the rapper joined the military because he was affected by the September 11, 2001 attacks, but, according to an interview with SOHH.com from 2005, there was another reason: “‘I enlisted because I wanted to get away from the music,’ said the MC. ‘I wanted to do something that gave me a separate definition from what I had done all through my teens and twenties. I was 28 when I enlisted’”.[6] In May of 2003, two months before his fifth album, Rip the Jacker, was released to rave reviews, he graduated from Fort Knox and began working as a reconnaissance specialist. In 2004, the authorities found Williams smoking marijuana and thereby discharged him.

After his parents, Basil and Elaine Williams, divorced, Williams moved to the United States with his mother at the age of thirteen. His first new home was The Bronx, where he found an interest in the hip-hop culture, beatboxing, breakdancing and rap music. Due to his mother’s job he was often forced to move, living in Washington, D.C., Miami, Florida, Buffalo, New York, England (where his mother originated from), Atlanta, Georgia and New Jersey. This constant movement limited his ability to make friends and turned him into something of a recluse.[1] Williams graduated high school in 1992 and went on to work for AT&T and the US Department of Justice as a data analyst. It was at this time that Williams became highly interested in the Internet. Having developed this interest in computers and the Internet, he studied computer science at DeKalb Community College (now Georgia Perimeter College) in Atlanta.

i dunno if this is what he’s saying, but my take is basically there are 5 200 bar songs, each layered in 1 of 5 channels… since he says you only hear one at a time and it can mixed “infinately” this leads to believe that each bar has 4 other “sibling” bars, which are interchangable… which leads to a whole bunch of possibilities for how the songs lyrics play out.. kinda like a mad lib on meth.

i don’t think i gave idlewild a chance to grow on me. despite telling myself over and over again that it was a soundtrack in my heart i still wanted to hear the “old” outkast and ofcourse idlewild was never made to live up to those type of expectations. now dre is teasing us with all of the fire verses and i’m like oookkkkk maybe next time around outkast will be back on that real outkast shit….watch that nigga sing every damn song on the next album and once again i will feel dissappointed.

I was reading this interview with Lance “Un” Rivera in King magazine, the other day….he said Big got a shitty deal with Puff, as far as royalties and publishing goes, but that Big used to get paid like $100K on the side, per song, for ghostwriting…he said you’d be surprised at the niggas Big wrote for, too….dude said that Big had these ideas for businesses, the Brooklyn Mint clothing line, and a restaurant called “Big Poppa’s Chicken and Waffles”, which Diddy pretty much jacked as his business plan for “Sean John” and Justin’s….Really good read…
