Ethan Brown Analyzes the Supreme Transcripts

As you may have heard, notorious Queens hustler Kenneth "Supreme" McGriff was sentenced to life in prison yesterday (February 9) for ordering the murders of Troy Singleton and rapper Erick "E Money Bags" Smith. Unfortunatley, I haven’t had the time lately to follow the trial as closely as I would’ve liked to, but I’ve been doing some catching up. Ethan Brown, author of the book Queens Reigns Supreme, has been blogging the trial over at his website, and has the first two posts of a four part series on the trial transcripts up now. Ethan has an intimate understanding of all of the events surrounding the murders, Supreme’s past, and how the whole situation connects to the world of hip-hop, so if you’re looking for some interesting insight on the case, he’s the man to turn to.

“OK, so now let’s get to some background about the Smith murder. Prosecutors say that in December of 1999, Supreme and Black Just got into a heated argument with Smith and his cousin Hommo (short for “homicideâ€; and no this isn’t the same “Hommo†who I implicated in 50 Cent’s shooting in Queens Reigns Supreme). Guns were pulled. Supreme’s gun jams and Black Just is shot. Supreme then rushes Black Just to the hospital. Jon Ragin, a cooperator in the case, testified that Supreme said of the incident “I pulled a gun, it jammed, I ditched it at the scene, and then drove Blacky to the hospital.†But by the time Supreme and Black Just arrive at the hospital it’s too late. Black Just’s wounds are too serious and he dies. Supreme, prosecutors say, vows to get revenge.”

The battle between the Dips and G-Unit looks a lot like the war we are fighting over in Iraq. G-Unit is the more modern and well-armed force. They have the machinery behind them to blanket the media with their artists. The Dips, not so much, but where DipSet makes up for not being with a major label is their feistiness and work ethic. They are like the Taliban that is embedded inside the cities of Iraq. They jump out and leave a roadside bomb and then they run back into the huddle of crowded buildings for camouflage. They strike quickly although they don’t hit hard enough to topple you they annoy you with their persistence because they keep coming back at you. In the eyes of the people it looks like they’re winning, or at least it looks like they are able to hang with what should be a superior force.
