Mick Boogie and Phonte Q&A
As you may have heard, Mick Boogie and Little Brother will be offering their new mixtape And Justus For All for free download on February 13th. I recently had a chance to throw some questions at The Commisioner and Phonte about the project, the new climate in the mixtape world and what they have in store for ’07.
Tell me about the new mixtape. How’d you guys link up and how closely did you work with together on this project?
Mick Boogie: I met Little Brother a couple years ago when they did a show in Cleveland, then I saw them last summer. They were familiar with my CDs so we discussed doing something together. We worked very hand in hand on this. Hundreds of emails back and forth discussing beats, concepts, ideas, skits, promotion, guests… you name it. Definitely the most hands on I’ve ever been on any project.
Phonte: I worked more closely with Mick on this mixtape than I have with any "A&R" on any album I’ve ever done.
You’re offering it as a free download, as you do with many of your mixtapes, Mick. All mixtapes are supposed to be "for promotional use only" but we know that’s not always the case. What convinced you that giving away your product would be beneficial to you?
Mick: It sounds cliché, but music is for the people. I make a nice living doing clubs, events, and marketing. Pooh and Tay make a great living doing shows and doing features. We felt, especially in today’s new mixtape climate, that this would be a great way to give back to people who have supported our ventures.
Phonte: At the end of the day, I just want my music to be heard. Who can argue with free?
Having done projects with those guys, I’m sure the Drama and Don Cannon arrest was a big shock to you guys. Do you foresee that situation affecting you in a negative way?
Phonte: The Drama situation surprised me, but I don’t foresee it affecting me in a negative way. I’m an artist, and I’ll always create.
Mick: Well, first of all, those guys are friends of mine…so I look forward them beating this situation and rejoining us out here in the grind. With that said…I think, ultimately, this may help mixtapes. Actual rules on what can/can’t be done on mixtapes, more awareness of the power of mixtapes and maybe even more major label support for the projects they are already funding secretly.
Do you get alot of support, directly or indirectly from the record labels that the artists you work with are signed to?
Mick: Yes, of course. All the time. Sponsorship for cds, exclusives, getting lazy artists to cooperate, public relations help…you name it. Until a few weeks ago, everyone I talked to at any label loved mixtapes and the assistance they provided.
Since the RIAA represents those same record companies, do you feel like they are shooting themselves in the foot by going after the very people who are helping their artists sell so many records?
Mick: It’s a catch-22. Sometimes, if you’re not in the culture, grey areas that are really positive are cast in the wrong light. Like I said earlier, hopefully this situation will shed some light and positives on the game…because as 99% of the world will tell you, what we do totally benefits the labels. And they know it.
You’re the official DJ of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Tell me how you landed that gig and what it’s like spinning during an NBA game.
Mick: It’s great. I had done a lot of parties and events for the players and some of the front office knew me. I gave them a nice presentation on why they needed me…put that college degree to work…lol…and thus, the job was mine. Marketing-wise, it opens up a lot doors as well.
Does Lebron throw any groupie love your way?
Mick: Lol…no. Funny question, though.

Phonte: Well, you can EXPECT whatever you want…lol (c) D.L. Hughley. What you’re gonna get is me and Pooh’s leanest and meanest record to date.
Mick, you had a huge year in 2006, what’s on the table for 2007?
Mick: Got a couple people trying to discuss album deals, which will be dope when it’s done. A small clothing line coming soon with my homie Terry Urban. Definitely some A&R work for rappers I respect. More traveling. I’m about to make my second trip to Europe next month…and we have some fantastic events lined up for All-Star as well. Anyone who says mixtape djs can’t rock parties…well, you need to come to one of our parties.
If there was one artist, living or dead that you could work with on a mixtape, who would it be?
Mick: I’d say Biggie but we have this Biggie-influenced project in the vault that’s very dope…so I’m gonna say Jay-Z cause the man is unstoppable. Also, I’m sad I was never able to get Percy Miracles on a mixtape!
What new artist should we look out for in 2007?
Mick: Al Fatz out of Cleveland. He has the Midwest on smash right now, and is signed to Dreamlife/Atlantic. Co-signed by Lebron, too…he is appearing in the new Sprite campaign. Cleveland is gonna be the next Midwest city to blow up!
Phonte: Check for debut albums from Chaundon, JozeeMo, and Joe Scudda from our Hall Of Justus camp.

^He did seem to be on his high horse. But honestly, I didn’t make out the interview to be as bad as everyone else. I think that’s the reason HHG didn’t post it as a beef like they did the 50/Cam joint because Styles and 50 seemed civil. I agree with Styles for the fact that 50 doesn’t make street music anymore. Now we can easily assess the same about Jay. But the difference is that Jay hasn’t been involved in any speculated beef to promote his career. He derived from tellin’ hustler tales over the beat in a classy way. 50, however, came from the grit and grime of Jamaica, Queens type of rap with Onyx and Nas’ Bravehearts team (even Jungle claimed that 50 jacked the term “wanksta” from their crew). Though Jay has done pop music, it has always had a street connotation when you dissected the lyrics. 50, on the other hand, went all out and has made strictly commercial type joints (Candy Shop) and that’s what he gets scrutinized for. 50 came outta the gate sellin’ 10 mil which is why him being “in touch” with the streets has basically been a lost cause judging from his last few songs. While Jay, on the other hand, usually tops out around 5 mil and that’s after years of hard work and puttin’ out albums. Styles made some valid points in that 50 makes himself seem untouchable because this is not of the essence from which he came. I think they have a mutual respect for each other regardless of the personal things that they might not like about one another.

^LOL! I know, right? Funny thing is, I’ve mastered (or plan to) on how to “put the Pepto Bismol in the Nestle Quik” bottle. See… we’ve learned to judge people based on perception and already have preconceived notions about them which will determine if we would want to associate with them or not. If you see a guy in a head wrap, dreads, Lion of Judah shirt, and some sandals, then automatically many are gonna have certain assumptions about him. Therefore, other dudes might automatically write him off as a over-preachy, Pro-Black activist that just talk too much. And the “sistas” (a term I use loosely) will look at him like he’s corny or whatever else they wanna label him… either way, they don’t wanna listen.
But see, with D. Billz, I learned to sneak my revolutionary movement in without them noticing it. First of all, I consider myself a stylish dude (though I mix it with Haile Selassie (sp?), Malcolm X, and 1968 Olympic tees), therefore being more aethestically pleasing to the eye (no metro). So ladies will be more receptive to talk to me not knowin’ what my agenda is. And I’m always crackin’ jokes and throw in sports and music so when I’m around the fellas, they don’t expect me to be some underground, Afro-centric, Pro-Black activist either. Once we begin polyin’, I bring up lil’ topics here and there to see where there mind is and THAT’S when I start to indulge in my “conspiracy” theories about politics, culture, education, jobs, finances, organizations, etc.

The masses have already been pre-conditioned and brainwashed to focus on other things and would just label you “crazy”. The powers that be already knew this which is why they have no qualms about leavin’ that type of info out there. BUT, certain individuals have “mysteriously” vanished from knowin’ too much and sharing too much. You said that you wanted to know more. My best suggestion for someone who wants to elevate is to start off with William Cooper’s “Behold A Pale Horse”. He was in the military and learned of the grand scheme and tried to share it with the masses (via his book, taped seminars, etc). They’ve had secret service men waitin’ outside of his house and even tried to force his car off the road. It’s still a mystery as to how he died though.

The group was founded in 1832 by Phi Beta Kappa pledges William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft. [1] The first Skull and Bones class, or “cohort,” was the very next year, 1832-33. The society was all male until 1992.
Traditionally, the Yale Daily News published the names of newly “tapped” members of all major secret societies at Yale, but this practice was abandoned during the student rebellion of the sixties. It has since been reinstated informally by the campus tabloid The Rumpus. Hence, although the society’s current membership rosters and activities are not officially disclosed, the membership is in fact a matter of knowledge among the incoming and outgoing Yale senior class, university administration, active alumni from other societies, and underclassmen. This may be said of the other societies, as well, particularly Scroll and Key and Wolf’s Head.
The society inducts only rising seniors during the late junior year prior to their graduation.
By reputation, “Bonesmen” tapped the current football and heavyweight rowing captains as well as notables from the Yale Daily News and Yale Lit before the 1970s. However, the group’s decision, after much dispute, to admit women eventually diversified the membership. Numerous undergraduate constituencies are better represented among the recently-tapped membership compared to the cohorts, or delegations, that included the 27th, 41st and 43rd Presidents of the United States.
The Skull and Bones tomb.- Beginning in 1833, one of the responsibilities of the cohort of fifteen seniors is to select fifteen new junior members to replace them, which is called being “tapped” for the society. Tapped members meet in the Bones “Tomb” on certain evenings of each week for the duration of their senior year. – - According to “dissident” Bones members interviewed by Alexandra Robbins for her book Secrets of The Tomb [p. 5], members dine off a set of Mussolini’s silverware while in the tomb, consuming expensive gourmet meals with each other over the span of the year. Members are given new code names. The members call themselves “Knights,” and simultaneously call everyone else in the world at large “barbarians.” Another dissociation is that clocks in the Bones “tomb” run intentionally five minutes ahead of the rest of the world, to give the members an ongoing sense that the Bonesmen’s space is a totally separate world — and a world just a bit ahead of the curve of the rest of the “barbarians” outside. Many people believe that the membership of Skull and Bones had been totally secret. However the membership for each year is held in the Yale University archives. The membership rosters cover the years 1833-1985, with some additional years. The top repetitive families in Skull and Bones are also known because in 1985 an anonymous source leaked rosters to a private researcher, Antony C. Sutton who wrote a book on the group titled America’s Secret Establishment: An Introduction to the Order of Skull & Bones. This leaked 1985 data was kept privately for over 15 years, as Sutton feared that the photocopied pages could somehow identify the member who leaked it. The information was finally reformatted as an appendix in the book Fleshing out Skull and Bones, a compilation edited by Kris Millegan, published in 2003.
Many influential figures have been in Bones and influential families have often had multiple members over successive generations, much like other societies at Yale. Bonesmen include U.S. Presidents such as George H. W. Bush and William Howard Taft, Supreme Court Justices, the Allerton family (who were part of the Mayflower compact), and U.S. business leaders.
Both 2004 Presidential Nominees – Democratic Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and Republican President George W. Bush – were members of Skull and Bones. The nominees were interviewed separately by Meet the Press’s Tim Russert. When asked about the organization, both declined to give any details. [3]

^I think about that too. They could have cops flood the streets anytime they want but they choose not too. When they saw the economy sway in on direction and knew that the urban area would be a place to live, that’s when all this gentrification started. They let us wipe ourselves out and move in when the timing is right. I wish there were some books on it.

The is a very effective way of doing that if you have connections to the right figure-heads (Leaders). Secret meetings promises of passes are made in exhange of cooperation. The elected official knows that he cant stop crime, …but by having an arm in the streets he can shift it.
