As a teacher and positive role model in the African-American community, I thought that the tradition of Kwanzaa should not be made a mockery. It only justified the downfall of literacy amongst many children in the Black community. Dr. Malauna Karenga founded Kwanzaa in 1966, not to have the spirit of the holiday broken through humor and disrespect towards African people, but to teach Black people through seven principles how to love themselves and become successful individuals. I am saddened that instead of taking this opportunity to teach our children how to appreciate the seven principles of Kwanzaa, and how it can enrich their lives, they are taught how to disrespect their culture through poor examples like these. If this were any other culture they would not make such a negative parody of their traditional celebrations.
