Hip Hop Lives
In case you haven’t heard:
Nas scores his third No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week with his eighth studio set, "Hip Hop Is Dead." The Def Jam effort moved 355,000 copies last week in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The rapper’s last effort, "Street’s Disciple," peaked at No. 5 on the chart. Nas’ two other sets to take the summit were 1999’s "I Am… The Autobiography" and 1996’s "It Was Written."
Personally, I’m proud of the Little Homey. He stepped up and made a much better album than Street’s Disciple and people went out and copped it..it’s as simple as that.
"I’ll tell you what, we’ll look at them first week numbers and we’ll talk about it" - Young Jeezy on Nas
Let’s talk about it.

No hate for the South, itself (shout out to Magic City, lol), but Southern artists kinda wore out their welcome, by gloating that the East was quote, endquote, “falling off”…and flaunting how their little bullshit was killing the charts….it’s poetic justice, now that their numbers are heading south, so to speak, while the East seems to be on the verge of regaining some territory

Jeezy created the “ether”, Monie lit the “match”. If Jeezy doesn’t think he sounded utterly ridiculous then he backed his way into fame. It’s not about having balls to respond, it’s what he said. Equating street cred with Hip-Hop as if knowing how to cut a brick, whippin’ up some crack, or duckin’ the Feds stamps one’s Hip-Hop pass. SOMETIMES, these entertainers take themselves way too seriously.
Nas won…and by extension, validated Monie’s point.

^LOL! You probably lighter than me, nukka. But I agree with Milwaukee though on the “goin’ against the grain” part. Lupe still has plenty of time though so I’m not worried about him being overlooked right now. But in the next few years, just wait and see…

>>Congrats to NaS and everything, but to me Lupe did more than he did to “bring” hip-hop back. He the who took it on the chin making a album that bucked the trends of today.
^true. A lot of people didn’t give Lupe a chance cuz they picture him carrying a skateboard everywhere and because he’s diff from the norm. Slowly i think more peeps are looking past that though. That’s good. F&L is a great album!!
December 27th, 2006 at 1:54 pm
>> I don’t think that’s what he’s saying
that wasn’t what i was saying either, i meant nas won’t be able to make those tracks anymore because he’ll be a “where are they now” type rapper. he can’t handle this type of fame, standing next to jay is too much for one person.
though, the money over bullshit beat is too gutter
December 27th, 2006 at 1:56 pm
If it was all about street cred, Bumpy Knuckles would be where Jay-Z is in the game, right now…talent has to come into play at some point in the equation…after all, it is music we’re talking about here..

^Even though 50 and Cam might not be the most popular with people who are consistent with their character, they definitely paid their dues in the game as rappers (both startin’ out as MC’s, imo). 50 was considered one of the illest before Power of a Dollar around the same time Cam was droppin’ “Confessions of Fire” and was in everybody’s top 5. Jeezy, on the other hand, is just some random ass mofo who got lucky because of how the system is set up for lackluster ass individuals to reap the benefits. He hasn’t paid any of the dues that others in the South has in hip hop such as Scarface and the Geto Boys, Outkast, Luda, Master P (for better or worse), Juvenile, UGK and a few others. These dudes were makin’ good music during a time when it wasn’t even “popular” to like the South.
In conclusion, fuck Jeezy.

^^I guess time will tell. Lupe did start off with winning debut, but the reality is the so-called “backpacker” type rap music never does well when it comes to the mainstream, compared the guntalk and dope rhymes. Damn. The thing is Jeezy dont think he garbage and 353k fans the first week didnt either, so when he demand respect it should be no suprise, no one discrediting your opinion, it is what it is.
^^ Jeezy is garbage, and his fans know that too. They’re not checking him for his lyrics, just his beats. He could just put out an instrumental album and do just as well. If people base how good somebody is on sales than vanilla ice, hammer, nelly would go down as top 10 of all-time. Truth is, garbage sells. It has always been that way.

^^you keep referring to “the south.” why don’t you refer to whoever from the south you are talking about? not everyone from the south took issue with the phrase “hip hop is dead.” you continously say “the south” is stupid for getting mad at people talking shit about bullshit south rappers. i take this to mean that people are talking about individual artists and not an entire region so why get upset right? however, you can’t even follow your own advice because you continously refer to an entire region.

hi biggums
HI SHANTI AND YOU GOT A POINT BUT LUDA, T.I. JEEZY,FIELD MOB , EVERY PERSON FROM THE SOUTH THAT COMES ON HERE IS ALWAYS TALKING BOUT HOW WE HATE ON THE SOUTH BECAUSE I DISSED ONE ARTIST
I JUST SAY YOU PEOPLE FROM THE SOUTH WHO GET SO OFFENDED WHEN WE DISS JEEZY OR LIL FLIP NEED TO SLOW YOUR ROLL, EVERYTIME I DISS ONE OF THEM I’M ” HATING ON THE SOUTH ‘ WHEN I JUST HATE THAT MUSIC
NOW GO READ EVERYTHING I SAID AND REALIZE I DIDNT CALL OUT THE WHOLE SOUTH BUT ONLY THE SOUTHERN PEOPLE WHO GET OFFENDED JUST CAUSE I DISS A COUPLE I DISS SOME SOUTHERN ARTISTS, AND REALIZE ALL I WAS SAYING WAS ITS PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH TAKING THE SHOTS AT THE EAST COAST AND PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH CREATING TENSION WITH THE EAST BY BEING OFFENDED BY NONSENSE, NO ONE DISSED THE SOUTH AS A WHOLE SO STOP ACTING LIKE THEY DID
December 27th, 2006 at 4:25 pm
@ biggums
before i made my comment i went back and read everything you said. i try not to make uninformed comments. however, you repeatedly said “the south needs to do this and the south needs to stop doing that.” i didn’t take offense to it or anything but i want you to realize that your words may lead some to believe you are generalizing and this is probably why people take offense to some of the things you say and cause some folks to believe you got ana(beef) with the entire south. like you say though-w/e, w/e, w/e.
December 27th, 2006 at 4:31 pm
^^^ YES IT IS TRUE BUT I SAID IT LIKE ITS PEOPLE FROM THE SOUTH TAKING SHOTS AT THE EAST COAST, ITS THE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH THAT GET OFFENDED WHEN I SAY CASH MONEY SUCKS, THEY TAKE IT LIKE I’M DISSING THEM, I SAID I HAVE NEVER HEARD ANYONE FROM NYC AREA CALL OUT THE SOUTH AS A WHOLE BUT PEOPLE FROM THE SOUTH STAY CALLING OUT NYC AND THE EAST COAST AND THEY STAY BITCHING ABOUT YET, YES TECHNICALLY I GROUP THEM ALL TOGETHER BUT YOU SHOULD ALL BE ABLE TO REALIZE WHEN I TYPE THAT I DON;T MEAN EVERYONE THAT LIVES BELOW THE MASON DIXON LINE I’M TALKING ABOUT ALL THE ONES BITCHING AND INSTEAD OF TYPING OUT EACH INDIVUAL NAME I JUST SAY ITS THE SOUTH GETTING MAD BECAUSE IT IS I STILL AINT HEAR ANYONE DIRECTLY DISS THE ENTIRE SOUTH BUT I HEAR THE SOUTH COMPLAINING ABOUT IT AND THATS JUST REAL TALK

[…] Nasty Nas moved 355,000 units last week to take home crown. I expected Hip Hop Is Dead to have a strong showing, but I honestly was thinking it’d be 200 something albums sold. Even crazier to me is that Nas beat out Jeezy’s first week album sales of 352,000 from the prior week, which made the Snowman look even sillier for stating “I’ll tell you what, we’ll look at them first week numbers and we’ll talk about it” (Via: Nah Right). In any case, it’s good to see the youngsters will get a little history lesson with the new Nas album and for the record I do like Jeezy’s work. […]

Big ups to Nas for the “Hip hop is dead” campaign. Not only did he sell units but he exposed a lot of insecure artists. Jeezy and Wayne were 2 of my favorite new artists but they lost me with their bitch tendencies. Hip hop will die if the public continues to put money in the pockets of faggots and fake ass street cats who don’t talk it how they b it.

Congrats to Nas and Jeezy for making two hot ass albums that BOTH prove that Hip Hop is not dead, over 300,000 purchases in one week for both albums keep the lights on in hip-hop. On another note, all that NY vs. South bullshit is tired and ignorant, (Eskay, I know you a NY media nigga, but you don’t have to add more fuel to the NY vs. South fire everytime a New Yorker finally does some numberss (i.e. Jay’s first week and Nas’s first week. Both posts were followed by an uneccessary comment about the south). You seem like a smart dude, so you know Jeezy was not talking about Nas when he made that comment about numbers, and you know it!, he was talking about his numbers) Hopefully in ‘07 New York hip-hop will sell and get some airplay, so ya’ll can stop bitching about the south.

Ironic that we end they year with Jay & Nas. Considering they are supposedly over.. Oh and the only album I bought apart from Nas this month was ‘The Shining’. Love the Common joints and the Monche cut is hotter than napalm in Nam. As for ‘Won’t Do’? Sweeter than waking up in the Playboy mansion on a Friday night with a pocketful of Viagra. I digress.
I think Nas is dope and Jeezy is well..dopey.
Nas is hypocritical, poetical, political, gangster, gutter, getting money. In short a man for all seasons.
Jeezy is a D-Boy. Um thats it. Oh yeah and a hypothetical snitch. On himself. Live it. Ok. Rap it? Nah we don’t believe you, you need more people.

I am so confused is it album sales or not
^^some people on here only bring up high or low record sales on here when it adds to their argument. in this case it was brought up because jeezy brought it up. however in other instances its brought up to show how great an artist is (i.e. when people on here brag on jay-z’s record sales) or low sales are dismissed to show how stupid the public is (i.e. styles p & ghostface sales). obviously it seems as if it should be one or the other (either high record sales =greatness or low sales= stupid public) but perhaps everyone doesn’t see it like that.
December 27th, 2006 at 7:33 pm
^^oh and just to adlib i know there are other factors to take into account with record sales (such as advertisement etc.) but that doesnt take away from the fact that folks on here do flip flop between record sales being important to record sales not meaning anything.

record sales are down in hip hop across the board–east coast, south, west, midwest. sure we had jay z and tip step out and both sell over 500,000 their first weeks but that’s not common and look at all the promotion both artist had just to sell (ti had a movie and jay z had budweiser, the whole out of retirement shit, water for life and etc). i wonder how much 50 cent would sell right now if he dropped a new album. however, since he says his next album will be “soulful” and he’s working with r&b producers he might be in the r&b category and do justin timberlake and beyonce numbers.

jeezy>nas
