But, he sort of comes close on this album. Difference being, on Illmatic he was a young kid in love with the game. Now, he comes across as more of a bitter old man complaining about the game.

freestyle basically mean ‘rapping live’ at this point. real freestylers are like circus acts at this point. it doesn’t help you write songs, hooks or interesting stories. its like somebody who could dribble real well on the playground, but would never be able to play in the big leagues. there are a few exceptions to this rule. eminem comes to mind.

Like some lil nigga said somewhere in this post, freestyling at this point is basically overated. It has no effects on a rappers attributes. Also what alot of rappers pass of as freestyles are basically rhymes they have memorized, or something they have thought out prior to the freestyle but havent wrote down. Either way this basically disqalifies it as a freestyle.
Real freestyling is hard to do for 95% of rappers, also do a couple mesmorized punchlines mean its not a “freestyle”. Guess it does. All these battle niggas like murder mook, Serious Jones, loaded lux, always have ryhmes memorized before a battle, so those aint freestyle battles either. Battles more about written punchlines than off the top freestyling anyways.
I’ve never heard Jay or Nas really “freestyle” in my life. And I doubt they have.

When rappers were the Master Of Ceremonies for DJ’s, and they’d just talk shit over records the DJ was playing, I’m sure they had things in their heads to say but I’m sure they made shit up too.
I remember rappers using it as a diss that “this kid don’t even freestyle”. Lord Finesse said shit like that. Now…. nobody cares (c) Sonny.
