Nike was often worshiped in conjunction with Athena, with whom she was particularly closely associated after the Greek victory over the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. The great statue of Athena Parthenos in the Parthenon in Athens is thought to have depicted Nike standing in the hand of Athena, and the Parthenon complex included a Temple of Athena Nike, built around 410 BC. The Athenians also dedicated a statue to Nike at Delphi. The statue of Zeus at Olympia reportedly also depicted Nike. On occasions, Athena was depicted with Nike’s attributes. According to Pausanias, the statue of Athena Nike depicted a wingless Nike (”Nike Apteros”), supposedly so that the statue could never leave the city of Athens. This temple has also provided a famous surviving depiction of the goddess, Nike unfastening her sandal (”Nike Slancio”), which was originally part of the temple parapet and is now on display in the Acropolis Museum in Athens.

Re: Nike and sweatshop labor practices. Just to clear the air, there are many things wrong with Nike, but being extra exploitive of the overseas workers who makes its shoes is not one of them. For whatever reason, leftists have latched on to this myth like pittbulls and they just won’t let go. And yes, it was once true that Nike was dirty in that respect, when it was exposed by labor groups in the 90s, it made an honest effort to demand better working conditions at the factories (which Nike doesn’t own, btw) that made its product. Recently in fact, it haulted production on a hand-stitched soccer ball cuz it found that the conditions in the European factory where it was being made weren’t up to par.

I know this cuz I once interviewed activist Kalle Lasn, publisher of Adbuster magazine, who created a Black Dot sneaker specifically to fuck with Nike’s branding efforts. He admtted to me that it was about taking down Nike’s marketing machine NOT its labor practices. I would provide the links, but you prolly won’t click on them anyway and I’m beat from working all night, but if you look around, you’ll find that international labor watchdog groups generally give Nike good marks.

No doubt there are still sweatshops (all over the world, including the good ole USA), but in all liklihood, they’re making dirt cheap product for low-profile companies.
