And I remember the fucking marketing blitz for The Massacre. That shit started in December with the Game singles and ended with his movie coming out. With like 5 different singles in there.
But really, who cares about marketing? The fact that so far a million people have gone out and put down hard earned money for Jay-Z’s album is amazing. Especially considering the leak. You’ve got to think that at least another 10 million got that leak. In today’s game, it is huge just to go platinum in six months. But platinum in 3 weeks, with hip-hop fans having no morales when it comes to piracy. Oh my God. Hov.
Hmmm, where’d my post go? Anyway, I love this song, and I’m not a huge Jay fan. My issue with Jov has always been that he doesn’t like to dig deep for material, but he does here.
As for numbers, it’s not about how it looks from the outside or even how the numbers compare to other releases, whether the same artist or a competing one. Every company sets sales goals and from what I’ve heard from someone who works at DJ, the suits had hoped for better sales of Jay’s cd, especially given all the advance promotion. So while it was by no means a bomb, it fell below projections.
I don’t think that’s about Jay as much as it is a changing music market. I do hope the record companies saved their money from those years when they were taking their customers to the cleaners for $17 cds that included two good songs tops.

^ It all about expanding the “Jay-Z” brand name. What he has done is become the face of urban america in alot of peoples minds. So while he has there ear when it comes to hip-hop, he can sell them whatever else he trying to sell.

with Dame id say Jay goes platinum and beats 50’s record..i KNOW YOU ALL KNOW Jay wanted to dead that record..but the die hard stans will say no..he spent 20 million promoting an album that doesnt put up big numbers…and he is happy with that.
Jay didnt have to dumb his self down or take off the suit, but Dame would have held him down in the streets more…lil crooked clubs he couldnt go to Dame/SP could go and buss a few bottles with the locals and still give Hov a sense of being street but all the while remainin corporate.
The problem with KC was Jay tried the “trickle down” method of promoting, which doesnt work..the streets have always dictated what was hot not the boardrooms, fads, hits, deals were always made by what whitey saw niggaz doin in the streets..not in the boardroom, Whereas Jay went to ESPN with “Show me what you got”….ESPN came to Jim Jones like “What is balling?”..Tell us more.

And I remember the fucking marketing blitz for The Massacre. That shit started in December with the Game singles and ended with his movie coming out. With like 5 different singles in there.
But really, who cares about marketing? The fact that so far a million people have gone out and put down hard earned money for Jay-Z’s album is amazing. Especially considering the leak. You’ve got to think that at least another 10 million got that leak. In today’s game, it is huge just to go platinum in six months. But platinum in 3 weeks, with hip-hop fans having no morales when it comes to piracy. Oh my God. Hov.

Hmmm, where’d my post go? Anyway, I love this song, and I’m not a huge Jay fan. My issue with Jov has always been that he doesn’t like to dig deep for material, but he does here.
As for numbers, it’s not about how it looks from the outside or even how the numbers compare to other releases, whether the same artist or a competing one. Every company sets sales goals and from what I’ve heard from someone who works at DJ, the suits had hoped for better sales of Jay’s cd, especially given all the advance promotion. So while it was by no means a bomb, it fell below projections.
I don’t think that’s about Jay as much as it is a changing music market. I do hope the record companies saved their money from those years when they were taking their customers to the cleaners for $17 cds that included two good songs tops.

I don’t hate Jay-Z. At all. I think the guy is an incredible talent. My take was all business, not at all personal.
