Not for nothin’… but did yall hear about the John Hopkins University incident? This is like the second incident of this kind in 2 years… but apparently some white kids at JHU, one of the most prestigious schools in America and probably #1 in MD, threw a “Ghetto” Party this past weekend. Now, from the details I got from the radio (92Q) this mornin’, muhfuckas sent out a email invitation askin’ students to dress up in furs, “bling bling” (jewelry), long white tees, Air Force 1′s, gold teeth, and askin’ the chicks to wear the skankiest outfit possible. In the email it also mentioned the ghetto being a HIV pit, and there was a reported mock lynching that occured as well. There was a similar incident that happened about 2 years ago at University of Maryland College Park that made national headlines (as you can see, MD is still a racist ass state… or just attract racist mofos from all over in their schools). The JHU Black Student Union and even the Asian Student Union are supposed to bring this situation to light today.
Now, one part of me is infuriated at just white people in general who STILL wanna exude as much ignorance as possible at the expense of Black people. They obviously still feel inner hatred and know that they would crumble in the presence of Black people, therefore they create their own social function to express how they really perceive us. They pulled no punches and attempted to dissect the culture as a whole using exaggerated images and ideas to convey to the masses.
On the other hand, I blame the hip hop culture as a whole. Just as B.B. King coined the phrase “the thrill is gone”… well, in this situation the FEAR is gone. They no longer FEAR us as they did during the days of NWA, Public Enemy, Afrikan Bambaata, early ONYX, early Wu, D.I.T.C., LOX, M.O.P., etc. We have to remember that these lil’ crackas (not white people… crackas) have never been exposed to any parts of the hood except for what they see on BET, MTV, and music video channels. We’re conveying false images of grandeur like shit is all sweet. The Minstrel Show is alive and poppin’ and they’re eatin’ that shit up. I’m not here to preach to yall or start some fake ass We Shall Overcome speech. All I’m sayin’ is that those lil’ muhfuckas woulda NEVER pulled that shit during the prime of hip hop. Just like when Raekwon smacked the fuck outta Steve-O when he demoralized ODB’s legacy in front of one… that’s the type of shit I’m talkin’ about. We know damn well that even with the new record deals, franchises, and endorsements that Blacks and Latinos are still strugglin’ and living in a real life war on the streets. And mofos in here that come from that environment or been around that environment know what the REAL is. So instead of tryin’ to start some fake ass movement, or hold press conferences, or interruptin’ Al Sharpton from one of his hair appointments. All I’m sayin’ is that we need to start displayin’ images in videos and through music that REALLY tell the story of what’s poppin’.

^ That’s the ill part because JHU is predominiately white school. A very rich one at that so it’s not hard for them to just sweep shit under the rug. As we speak, they’re gettin’ a new Barnes and Nobles built on their campus as well as some luxury condo-type apartments. I’m sure they’ll have someone from one of their Student Governments give one of those fake ass apology speeches. This type of shit woulda never popped off at Towson U. (the school I used to attend) because the Black presence is too strong there these days (even though it’s still a racist ass school). But being that the social atmosphere is small at Towson, no organization or group of people is hard to get at. But on a “prestigous” campus like JHU, and being that it’s enormous as fuck, it’s easy to go under the rader. Plus they got a lot of power because John Hopkins Hospital has bought up most of the east side of Baltimore on that gentrification shit. To give an example of their power: they have a BIG ASS MASON TEMPLE prevalent on their campus on Charles Street. I don’t think I need to say much more.

^ But you have to understand that smokin’ weed publicly isn’t a “social norm”. Most people who smoke weed publicly are perceived as rebels because they don’t care about being seen or caught. Therefore the “ghetto” or “thug” persona might be bestowed upon you regardless if that’s the type of person you are or not. It has nothin’ to do with your personality. Like homie just said, first impressions are the lasting ones.
