hmmm…good question. not sure. cops are allowed to search automobiles without warrants if they have probable cause to believe something illegal is going on. this applies to closed containers within the car. however the whole lawyer thing puts a twist on it. the officers had the ability to detain the guy based on probable cause until they were able to get a search warrant for the suit case from a magistrate. not sure why they let him go. if that’s what happened.
