The BET “Hip Hop” Awards
Yesterday BET announced the nominees for its first annual Hip Hop Awards ceremony which is scheduled to be held on November 12th in Atlanta. Clifford leads the pack with a total of 8 nominations, and I suppose he deserves all of them even if King didn’t live up to the hype. On the other hand, the 5 nominations that Yung Joc received are inexcusable. I’m sorry, but I can’t take seriously any awards show that nominates some clown who didn’t even write the shitty song that made him famous.
Then again, what should I really expect from BET. This is the station that’s supposed to be the O.G. Bobby Johnson of black broadcasting, but yet they’re letting VH1 completely blow them out of the water in the hip hop coverage category. And from what I hear, (I don’t get it in my area) TV One is killing them on everything else. Look, I like Katt Williams and I think he has his moments, but I can no longer pretend like his act isn’t one big coon fest.
Still, I can’t say that the nominations were completely off. Lupe actually received 4 nods, which surprised the shit out of me. If I went by what little of BET’s programming I catch when I’m at the barbershop, I wouldn’t have thought that anybody at that network even knew who the kid was. Which is something I don’t really get. Stephen Hill looks like a respectable enough guy, and I’m willing to bet that he doesn’t have a stripper pole in his bedroom, and I doubt he pops in a grill in when he leaves the office, so why does he insist on programming a bunch of nonsense into other people’s homes 24/7?

Expectations are likely too high for this project, considering the blinding shine from Danger Doom’s “The Mask” and the Fishscale recyclables. First jump is a 1970s-style prime time theme sampler; “Charlie’s Angels” horns in ultra-lush syrup mode. Ghost drops onomatopoeia (“Boom, bow, bing!”) and notes that this is not a “Hardy Boys mystery either. This is real shit.” Don’t believe him. It’s a gag excuse to recount childhood realities coupled with visions of Wonder Woman and Cheryl Ladd. It’s actually sort of underwhelming: Doom is too low and awkward on the cut, rapping off-beat as usual and sometimes too fast. This forces Ghost to pick up slack, something he sounds ill-equipped to do after 20-some-odd tracks on his last album. As the stars of a network drama (“St. Nowhere”? “Golden Grills”? “Grey’s Dichotomy”?), these two would be incredible.
