Yo, after hearin' this Budden song I had an epiphany. Walk wit' me... (Feces is gonna love this)

As many of you know, I've been absent from Nahright as of lately taking care of business. But, I have been checkin' the site frequently for updates and comments so I'm pretty much caught up with everything. Well, this new Joe Budden song popped up and I was dyin' to hear it. First of all, the flippin' of the old school beat for Broken Wings was a genius move (yall youngans know nothin' about that... 80's was a great era). After hearin' it on Nahright first, I wanted to hear it again but didn't feel like downloading it from Sendspace again or savin' it to the hard drive so I went over to HipHopGame to see if they had it. Not only did they have it, but I noticed that Joe's song had been listened to 13,000+ times already and it's only been on HHG for 2 days, 3 days tops. So for the first time at HHG I actually viewed the comments over there. People were giving it 5 outta 5 and 4 outta 5 ratings. There were a couple 3 outta 5's which mostly stemmed from not liking the beat. And the 1 or 2 ratings I saw below that were just pure hater comments. Anywayz, one person's comment on there by the name of 'sincere' really grasped my attention:

i sware yo not even on no groupie tip.....this nigga buddens music is so real its unreal to me......like it could change your day....u could be havin a shitty day throw on one of joeys joints and be like "yo i was juss feeling like that" like u juss identify wit that shit dats crazy b' anyways this song is incredible....i can't wait for mm3 since it seems like the growth isn't gonna see the light of day(dats what you get can't be arod playin on the same team as jeter) real talk

After reading that, I was thinkin', "yeah, I kinda feel the same way after listening to a Budden song". Especially anything off of Mood Muzik 2 and his most recent song releases in the past few months. What stuck out most in that comment was the A. Rod/Jeter reference. Of course, most of us know that Joe is referring to himself and Jay-Z. Budden has made references to his situation at Def Jam on Mood Muzik 2 and on various other songs. Even on Nahright, it has been talked about numerous times about how the abrasive feelings were initiated between Jay and Joe. Most of us agree that it was right after Jay did his own verse on Joe's popular "Pump It Up", only for Joe to take his OWN beat back and lay yet a few more new verses. The general opinion and reaction from the hip hop public was that Joe is a problem and a force to be reckoned with on the mic. He is one of the few people, if only, to freestyle AFTER Jay on the same beat and make a major impact. If Jay-Z is truly the Jordan of rap, then Budden is the Iverson: not only did he cross up Jordan in front of everyone in his rookie season, he earned his respect and play by his own rules. He doesn't kiss the NBA's (Def Jam) ass and refuses to do the same ol' shuck and jive "pop" songs just for a few spins. He could care less about the myriad amount of endorsements he could have because of his marketable "appearance". He touches the souls of many through his music because, as the cliche` goes, real recognize real. Just as A.I. has embarked upon the underdog title and considered a non-conformist because of his braids, tats, and street affiliations, Joe Budden has also been given the same title because of non-conformity. While I'm on a rant, lets get this clear, I've been a Jay fan since RD and bought all of his retail albums afterwards. I still think he's the greatest MC living and even sided with his point of view during the Roc split.

Speakin' of which, there's somethin' that happened during that time that I still haven't figured out. After most of us have villified Dame because of his antics and assumed bad business practices, one piece of the puzzle still doesn't fit. Last year, I copped Clinton Sparks "Maybe You Been Brainwashed" retail mixtape. There's a song on there called "Roc Cafe" feat. Beans, Bleek, and Budden. Right before Budden's verse, Dame make's an annoucement. In that announcement, these were his exact words:

"I kinda wanna make an annoucement, I'm not sure if it's too early. But fuck it, I'ma do it anyway: Joe Buddens is officially on Rocafella. Holla back"

Now, I don't know why this comment went under the radar or just totally ignored but no one has brought it to light since it was said. Not even Joe himself. But my question is simple... why? I understand there has been reported bad blood between Cam and Jay because of Dame electing Cam to VP while he was on vacation. That's all water under the bridge now. At first, Jay didn't want to sign Kanye as an artist, but just as a producer. Dame signed him and now he's the most successful artist on the Roc roster. ODB was also another act that Jay didn't approve of. Due to his untimely death, it's hard to say how far his career would've gone. Especially since he was signed after his prime. And of course there's the unfortunate release of M.O.P. due to the Roc split. Many of us wanted, and still do, blame Dame for a lot of inconsistencies with the label. Yeah, I'll admit that after awhile it seemed that Dame was startin' to get greedy. We all knew he was a asshole from jump (which is part of the reason I admired his business moves back then because he didn't let the corporate clowns dictate his success) but after the incident of not givin' Jay the masters to his RD, we considered that a certified bitch move and chalked up the legacy of the Roc to Dame's ego. Anyway, I digress. Because that annoucement is a clear indication that Dame has a knack for pickin' talent (a la Jay, Kanye, Beans) and that he wanted to give the Jersey guy a fair shot. But after hearing Joe continue to speak on the neglect of his album and work as an artist, we have to assume that Jay's hands aren't clean either. He had plenty of opportunities to make Joe Budden a priority on Def Jam and refused to accept responsibility. Many of you will say that Joe doesn't make good enough music and that his type of rap isn't condusive to sellin' albums, gettin' spins on the radio, or gettin' played at the clubs. Some of you will say that his future is in his own hands and that he can't blame anyone for coming up short, therefore he should just leave (which really isn't that simple when you have contractual obligations). But what many people ignore is that he was signed to the label by Kevin Liles before he left and was a priority before Jay was VP. Also, Jay has put plenty of effort into other artists on the roster who have also tanked, yet Joe was signed before them. Even Memphis Bleek was allowed to release 2 more albums after Buddens debut. Not to mention Buddens went gold with little to no promotion, leaked music, missed concerts due to throat surgery, banned from the Roc The Mic tour, and being pulled off numerous guest features due to label politics. Yet, there has been no Jay-Z there to lend a helpin' hand (so it seems). And to add insult to injury, he has "unretired" himself and released two sup-par singles (in my opinion) to prepare for his new debut. We could all argue that Joe isn't the only victim of circumstance and that The Roots, Method Man, Redman, Ghostface, and many others went ignored. But of all those artists aforementioned, it's fair to say that they're all past their "prime" (whatever that means in the hip hop world) even though they consistently put good albums (with the exception of Meth). With a mixtape that was better than most albums that came out in the last two years, it's fair to say that Budden is the most promising on that roster. But if Jay continues to be jealous/intimidated/annoyed/fed up with Budden, how will we ever know this if The Growth never drops?

Of course this entire rant is just my point of view from the outside lookin' in because none of us work for DJ or know what exactly what type of business/personal relationship Jay has with Joe. All I know is that there are plenty of people like me who are askin' the same questions for which we may never get answers.

Holla at yall soon... ~uno~

[...] OK, let's get this straight - first Diddy (and his ghostwriter) spit over a replayed piano lick from Tears For Fears's Donnie Darko jam "Head Over Heels" to start off Press Play, then Joe Budden loops Mr Mister's "Broken Wings" for a new freestyle? Somebody get Jim Jones a Simply Red album to hit for the trifecta... Posted in Music | 10/16/2006 _uacct = "UA-272695-2"; urchinTracker(); [...]

Take A look at yung Joc He is a commercial ass nigga as is his albums which leads to singles getting played on the radio.

Lil Wayne commercial in the begining and started to beocme very lyrical
His albums sales fell gradually as he turned to enhancinghis lyrics

Another theory is that the more rapper is in the hip hop industry the more lyrical they become

this is just my theories from being a hiphop head from the BK

J is right in this rap game you only get one chance and that is it. My theory is that most people on this blog listen to the lyrics of a song (i hope most people do because this is a hip hop blog) thats why he is nice to us. But, his first single was pump it up, which is a commercial song that killed the summer that year. The problem is Joe Buddens was lyrical back then as is now even better.

Being Lyrical= Respect among peers, and concious people
Being Commercial= respect among lil kids and industry heads which leads to selling records and getting rape off of publishing

oh and Buddens is not a young he's pushing 30
