I wonder what 5 artists under 28 Nas is diggin’. Game is one obviously. He should shut the fcuk up imo though. I wonder who the other 4 are? That leaves a ton young rappers out there that need to keep hushed. He might be right though.

Lupe is definitely one of them. But fuck Nas, I’d rather hear rappers from my generation instead of the cast of 30-something telling me how it is, how it was, and how it should be.

^^Thats so true. Its seems that they aren’t willing to be creative or are just rapping for money only. No artistic integrity. Not that every song has to have some sort of message or anything, but damn be more creative sometimes.
But I don’t wanna be to harsh on the under 28, cuz the execs are only looking for gimmicks anyway.
October 10th, 2006 at 11:36 am
@ G7
Yeah I got into an argument with my friend this weekend about this… I said Young Dro was coonery and he was like ‘nah, it’s just a southern guy rapping about what his environment is like’. I still think it’s kind of shucking and jiving for 2006 but I can appreciate that its a window for people who aren’t from that part of the country or that background to see what the “culture” is like. But I think most of the older cats aren’t really saying too much either. Don’t get me wrong, Nas is my #2 all-time mc, but really he’s the only one who I consistently get something out of his lyrics. Jay maybe 80% of the time. But other older dudes? Not hearin them say much of anything.

@ hip hop cop
Hiphop is in a messed up state right now. I still think most of the older mc’s are better than the ones coming up, but the older mc’s don’t get any shine anymore really unless you’re a big name. And the young rappers coming up are so gimmicky and lack versatility. And hiphop seems to be the only music that has an expiration date on age. Like once you hit 30-something you’re irrelevant(in most cases). It’s not like that in other genres of music. Some rappers need to know when to fall back though. It’s almost like boxers not knowing when to quit…ie Holyfield
October 10th, 2006 at 11:50 am

My thing is that Nas’s album will be real good, but the times changed… The people who buy, are buying Santana, Game, Dem Franchise Boyz, Lil Wayne, etc… It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s I think he lost his selling appeal with the new cats, thesedays.

^^ Not at all — but if he’s calling out cats who aren’t saying anything- than he needs to realize that some of those rappers fall in his age bracket.
If he’s talking about responsibility and Hip Hop ownership, he needs to take a look at his generation of rappers anmd what they did or more to the point didn’t do to ensure that the torch and knowledge was passed down correctly. Its easy to call out someone because they’re young, but come on there is more to it than that.

nobody told them niggas to put that shit out. them niggas did not come out as commercial artists so what would ever make them think that commercial was the way to go? all that does is alienate your real fanbase and cause you to flop even harder. like niggas said above, you don’t need a budget to make a good album, especially in the days of Myspace and the internet.

yes and I actually said it in the same post where I aired Atlantic out. what I said was I wanted him to win to send a message to the industry. I think in certain circumstances it’s alright to make an exception, but for the most part, fuck the majors. Lupe is the exception…most records like his are dropping on independent labels. the only reason Atlantic fucked with him is cuz of the Kanye/Jay co-sign, plus Chi-town is considered ‘next up’ or whatever, so they’re riding the wave. 97% of the shit Atlantic puts out is trash.

As far producers and budgets; it goes both ways
Somebody could use their budget for big-name people and still get nothing in sales… But sometimes it does help to get quality production.
Like Camron, used to get Heatmakerz and Just Blaze and make good tracks (Come Home with me) and now he’s getting cheap and ‘”finish up my album for $15,000″ and the production/songs suck.
October 10th, 2006 at 1:26 pm

you can trace alot of it back to the major mergers of ’99ish. anytine a huge company takes over another huge company– you just end up with a beast. In other industries it may work, but in entertainment it just turns out a mess of formulaic, homogenized bullshit.
then throw clear cahgnnel in the mix buying every radio station in the country and thats it– when you have 4 companies making all of the decisions you loose out on any creativity or innovation. the machine becomes too big to fight

K-OS’ rant is a little sad. It’s not “Uncle Tom-ing” if the writer likes your work. However, the truth does hurt. I haven’t heard his latest offering, but I did get his first album, and the truth is: His lyrics are average. He’s earnest, but that’s probably the best you can say. He has to remember that he’s being compared to “best in class”. It’s unfair, but that’s just a fact of the world we’re in, where technology makes it incredibly easy to sample a wider variety of work
