White Power Rap?
I just came across an article about this "white power rap" group called Woodpile and I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around their whole gimmick image:
…But the members of Woodpile — all ex-cons — say their music celebrates "white pride" but not white supremacy. As the most forward face of the Woods gang (the name is a play on an old-time slur for a Caucasian: "peckerwood"), they describe themselves in opposition to racist gangs such as the Aryan Brotherhood or the Nazi Low Riders.
Ok, so I’m confused. On their Myspace page they clarify that they are not in fact opposed to the Aryan Brotherhood or the NLR, two notoriously racist prison gangs. Yet, they use a decidedly black form of music to spread their message? In prison no less? So what, are you telling me that the skinheads in Pelican Bay bump hip hop while they’re in the yard plotting on which darkie they’re gonna shank next?
At any rate, this whole white pride/power shit is altogether unsettling. It may be hypocritical, but where I come from white pride = racism. While at the same time, black pride = perfectly acceptable. Sorry, but that’s just how it is.

I don’t think that having pride in whatever race you are is wrong. But aligning yourself with a group known for hate crimes certainly is. I disagree with you eksay when you say that it’s wrong for a white person to be proud of his heritage, while it’s acceptable for a black person to do the same. I think that it’s this kind of thought that seperates races and perpetuates racism. In a perfect world we would have pride in ourselves and not in a group that we might belong to just because we happen to have the same color skin.
Don’t get me wrong though. “White Power Rap” is disgusting and this CD looks hurtin.

well…I didn’t actually say that. I think in the context of the United States if somebody says ‘white power’ or ‘white pride’, they’re usually not the type of person I’d wanna fuck with.
I feel like if you’re white in this country and you wanna show pride in your heritage then why don’t you rep whatever your heritage is? ‘white’ is not a nationality. if you’re italian, jewish, irish, then rep that. but when you start repping your race in a country with so much history of white supremacy, then you’re stepping into dangerous territory.

You’re right, eskay, that is just how it is. But at the same time it’s unfortunate, because out society has become so immersed in political correctness that we’ve forgotten that it’s okay to be a white, proud, and not racist at all.
When I think of someone talking about white pride, even if not in a supremacist way, my first thought is still that they are being supremacists. But I still think it’s necessary to step back and analyze the cultural context of these feelings, and hopefully see that it’s entirely contradictory to feel that it’s okay for someone to be proud of their race so long as it isn’t white.
